The Best Stainless Steel Soap: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a stainless steel soap
Why do I need a stainless steel soap?
Stainless steel soap is popular for removing the following odours from hands:
How stainless steel soap works is not fully understood. It is assumed that stainless steel binds the odour molecules to its surface. It is also conceivable that molecular parts of the odours react chemically with the stainless steel, neutralising the odour.
In any case, the odours are removed without chemical additives. Due to these properties, stainless steel soap is mainly used in the kitchen.
However, it is also popular with anglers and allergy sufferers. Even if sustainability is important to you, stainless steel soap is a good idea to buy because of its durability.
What are the advantages over conventional soaps?
In addition, the odour is not simply masked with perfume (as in conventional soap) - the odour-forming molecules are bound and removed by the stainless steel. Stainless steel soaps are very long-lasting and thus superior to conventional soap from a sustainable point of view.
With a normal soap, the components of the soap are flushed down the drain. With stainless steel soap, no harmful waste water is produced. You also have to replace conventional soap regularly.
The advantages of stainless steel soap are its long-lasting use, environmental friendliness and allergy-friendly removal of odours. With stainless steel soap, you really remove those odours instead of masking them like with perfumed soaps.
A stainless steel soap is used much longer and is therefore very environmentally friendly. Stainless steel soap is also very hygienic. In hospitals, stainless steel is very appreciated because the smooth surface offers little room for bacteria.
In addition, stainless steel hardly wears out even with long use and regular cleaning. So even after a long period of time, bacteria have little surface to attack.
What does a stainless steel soap cost?
In general, these prices are reasonable for the long service life of the stainless steel soaps. In addition to the type of stainless steel, the price varies depending on which accessories are included.
|With integrated brush||6-17€|
|Models for dishwasher and toilet||8-15€|
In some cases, there are combination models with a brush attached. Models with a matching tray can also affect the price.
In addition, there are some models that can be placed in the dishwasher, refrigerator or toilet with the help of a device. Here, your own taste and individual needs play the biggest role.
What alternatives are there to remove odours from hands?
To remove odours from cooking, apply one of the following home remedies to the palms of your hands. Then rinse your hands with cold water. The smell will be neutralised. This method works with:
- damp table salt
- Lemon juice
- boiled potatoes
- Coffee powder
- Baking soda
It is important to note that many of these alternatives (salt, lemon juice, toothpaste, coffee powder and bicarbonate of soda) can damage or irritate the skin surface of the hands due to acidity or excessive rubbing.
The home remedies presented here are therefore a quick solution to getting rid of kitchen odours from your hands. In the long run, however, you should be aware that these remedies (due to their coarse grain or acid content) can attack the surface of your hands.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate stainless steel soaps
Below are some aspects that can help you decide between the many possible stainless steel soaps.
The criteria you can use to compare stainless steel soaps include:
- Dishwasher safe
- Accessories (tray, brush)
In the following sections, we will explain exactly what each criterion is.
Stainless steel soaps have different compositions depending on the model. The most important difference, however, is between normal stainless steel and stainless steel.
Stainless steel is characterised by a minimum amount of chromium, which creates a so-called passive layer.
Since the stainless steel soap comes into contact with water when it is used, you must make sure to dry the soap after use, otherwise rust stains may appear.
Alternatively, look for the words 'stainless steel' when buying soap. With these stainless steel soaps, the passive layer prevents the soap from rusting.
The following designations also stand for stainless steel:
- 18/10 stainless steel
Stainless steel soaps are comparable in size to small bar soaps. On average, the dimensions are no larger than 10cm x 6cm x 4cm. In general, stainless steel soaps should not take up more space than the conventional version.
It is also practical that you can simply store the stainless steel soaps in the drawer without fear of soap residues.
However, due to the different designs and accessories, these dimensions can vary. However, pictures are often included so you can see how big the bar looks on a hand.
In the case of special shapes, you should pay attention to how large the respective model is, as deviations from the average dimensions can occur here more often.
If you don't want to clean stainless steel soap by hand, you should check whether the model you have chosen is dishwasher safe or not.
No-name manufacturers in particular often do not indicate whether the respective model can also be washed in a dishwasher or only by hand.
If you want to put your stainless steel soap in the dishwasher without damaging it: be sure to look for a corresponding note or the addition "stainless steel".
The problem here, as already described above, is the non-stainless stainless steel. Its surface is more sensitive and in the worst case makes the stainless steel soap unusable after washing in the dishwasher. Rust stains can then also occur.
Accessories (tray, brush)
In addition to the simple stainless steel soap, there are a number of models with different additives. So you can choose individually for which area of your household you want to use the stainless steel soap.
Some models include a shelf on which the stainless steel soap can be stored next to the sink. These are also made of stainless steel, but there are also variants made of plastic or silicone.
There are also stainless steel soaps that can be hung up with the help of a silicone loop or a plastic holder to remove odours from the dishwasher or refrigerator.
There are also ready-made holders for the toilet in which the stainless steel soap is embedded. There are also stainless steel soaps that are embedded in a larger piece of plastic with nubs. Here, the nubs are supposed to make it easier to clean the hands.
There are also some models that have a brush underneath the soap. This way, coarser dirt can be removed from the hands. The brush that would otherwise be needed is integrated here.
Depending on your taste, you can find different shapes of stainless steel soap on the internet. Most models have a design that is based on conventional curd soap.
However, many stainless steel soaps are also more elaborately designed and can thus become a real decoration in your kitchen. Stainless steel is easy to shape. That's why the shapes and designs of stainless steel soaps are so varied.
A wide range of shapes can be found, depending on your preferences and your personal interior design style. These range from minimalist to theme-oriented (e.g. stainless steel soap in the shape of a fish or the shape of a garlic bulb).
In addition, there are models that ergonomically adapt to your palms, which is described as particularly pleasant in testimonials of these models.
Facts worth knowing about stainless steel soap
How do I use stainless steel soap?
To remove odour from your hands, simply clean your hands with the stainless steel soap for about 30 to 40 seconds under cold water. The stainless steel bar is used just like a normal soap.
Especially if you smell onions and garlic, you should rub your fingertips on the stainless steel. Odours are often trapped there after working with food. Particularly strong odours prolong the time needed for washing.
|Normal kitchen odours (onion, garlic, fish)||30-40 seconds|
|Strong odours (petrol)||60-70 seconds|
This includes odours like petrol or even smoke. To remove these odours you can simply extend the washing time to 60-70 seconds. If the smell still sticks to your hands, you can simply repeat the process.
How do I clean the stainless steel soap?
You can clean stainless steel soap with most household cleaners. This includes normal liquid soap. Alcohol-based cleaners are also no problem for stainless steel.
Simply apply the cleaner to the stainless steel, rub it in and then rinse with plenty of water. For non-stainless steel, you should avoid more aggressive agents and use milder cleaning agents.
With any stainless steel soap, you should avoid strongly acidic or chlorine-containing cleaning agents, as these can attack the surface of the stainless steel. In the case of stainless steel, this attacks the passive layer that protects the stainless steel soap from rusting.
Why does stainless steel soap work?
It is currently not fully understood why stainless steel soap works. However, there are two explanations that describe the neutralisation of odours. In either case, it is assumed that sulphur compounds are the cause of the unpleasant odours.
The molecules of the sulphur are changed by the stainless steel in such a way that the hands are free of odours after using the stainless steel soap. In the first approach, stainless steel is often described as catalytic.
This means that the elements of the stainless steel surface react particularly easily with other elements. So when washing with stainless steel soap, the odour-intensive sulphur molecules react with the stainless steel, neutralising the odour.
The second approach assumes that the gaseous sulphur molecules are bound to the surface of the stainless steel. These are then simply transported away by the water. The hands are odour-free after washing.
Does stainless steel soap also remove bacteria?
Just like conventional soap, stainless steel has no antibacterial effect. Nevertheless, it should be said at this point that the smooth surface structure of stainless steel (especially stainless steel) provides little breeding ground for bacteria.
This and the ease of cleaning make stainless steel soaps hygienic.
