What is a stapler?

The stapler is a tool - made of plastic, metal, or a combination of the two - that is used to group or fix sheets of paper or other materials by means of a U-shaped piece of wire called a staple.

The stapler appeared in the format we know today in the 18th century. Since then it has evolved and adapted to the usage needs of modern society. Today there are staplers of various shapes and capacities.

Some variations are the electric models, besides the sectored models which are suitable for use on construction sites, for stapling fabric, wood, upholstery, and even surgical staplers, which replace stitches in medical procedures.

What are the advantages of the stapler?

The first major advantage, is, of course, the ability to bring papers together very simply. In addition, the stapler is very cheap. There are models to suit all budgets.

This is a stationery tool used by students, professionals in many different areas or even at home.

In most cases, the stapler has the weight and measurements to be portable. Although some models are large and robust, ideal for offices, there are numerous small models with excellent quality.

The disadvantage is the need to replace the staples. And, some very cheap models can present problems with use and get stuck in the staples, damaging the papers.

  • Gather papers in a simple way
  • It is cheap and easy to find
  • Useful for students and professionals from the most varied areas
  • It is portable
Disadvantages

To avoid this kind of headache a quality product suitable for the intended use is fundamental. Evaluate what the demand volume for your stapler will be, since this type of product has a predetermined useful life. If the demand is high, it is worth investing in a better quality stapler, which will last longer.

Purchase Criteria: Factors to Compare Different Stapler Models

As we've already mentioned, choosing your stapler correctly is key to avoiding frustration and ensuring that the product satisfactorily performs the activities you need it to. We are all subject to making bad buys from time to time.

To help you make the right decision we have outlined below some of the features you need to pay attention to when choosing the stapler that will work best for you:

  • Type
  • Capacity
  • Staples
  • Design

Now check out the determining criteria in detail.

Type

There is a wide range of staplers on the market. To choose the ideal one, consider what uses will be given to the product, and the main needs it should meet and choose the one that best fits these parameters.

The main types are:

  • Mini: in reduced proportions, it fits in bags and cases. With capacity for few sheets, it is ideal for students, teachers and people with little demand of use/capacity;
  • Professional: With high capacity, it can staple up to 300 sheets, depending on the model. Ideal for stapling handouts, files and other high-volume materials;
  • Pliers: Activated with a movement similar to that of a pliers, this type of stapler is ideal for those who need to staple without having the support of a table;
  • Semi-automatic: It has mechanisms that demand less pressure for stapling. Some can be operated with just a finger.
  • Automatic: Can be of the type that has a sensor that identifies the entry of the paper or that operates a button, dispensing with the traditional movement of hand pressure to staple.

Capacity

The capacity of the staplers is measured using sheets of ordinary sulphite paper as a parameter. There are models with the most diverse capacities, and you can choose according to your needs.

The capacity of the stapler may change according to the weight of the sheets and the type of staples used, but basically they are:

  • Up to 25 sheets: can be mini or traditional type. Ideal for school or home use. It uses special staples in reduced proportions.
  • Upto 50 sheets: Ideal for home and school use. Generally it is safer, and the staples are fed from the top, to avoid contact with the staple output. It generally uses 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 staples.
  • Up to 100 sheets: Moving upto the professional category, these staplers are ideal for small companies and schools. They can use 23/6, 23/8, 23/10 and 23/13 staples.
  • Up to 240 sheets: Heavy, it must always be used on support surfaces. It generally has a base and hand support made of adherent materials to prevent accidents. It is recommended for medium and large companies, printers and copiers. Generally uses staples from 23/6 to 23/23.

Staples

Staples for staplers are categorised by two numbers, where the first indicates the spinner measurement and the second the leg of the staple. The higher the spinner number, the thinner the staple.

Domestic staplers generally use a fillet size between 24 and 26, while the leg size is given in millimetres. The leg size will be proportional to the maximum sheet capacity of the staple. The 6mm leg, for example, is one of the most widely used in the home and school environment and is sufficient for up to 30 sheets.

To know what is the ideal measure for your amount of sheets the calculation is simple: 3 mm are needed for the fold of the staple, and each extra 1 mm accommodates 10 sheets. For example, for 50 sheets you need 5 mm for the sheets + 3mm for the fold, so you should use 8 mm leg staples.

The most commonly used sizes of staples are:

  • 26/6 - Fine die and leg for up to 30 sheets;
  • 26/8 - Thin die and up to 50-sheet leg;
  • 6/24 - Thick die and up to 30-sheet leg;
  • 8/24 - Coarse spinneret and leg for up to 50 sheets.

Design

It may even sound silly, but the design of the stapler is important. For a more formal office, a more classic model, in black and simple colour will be ideal. Now, if the work environment is funky, why not dare to go for more colourful and cools pieces?

The school stapler can be pet, colored or matching the rest of the material. The important thing is to have quality and also express a little of the personality of the person or style of the environment in question.
