The Best Sweeper: Our Choices
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a sweeper
What kind of sweeper is suitable for me?
As a rule of thumb you can remember: If you need a sweeper for your own use, a manual sweeping system is sufficient in most cases. If you need the sweeper to clean very large areas or to remove very stubborn or coarse dirt, the purchase of a battery or petrol sweeper may well be worthwhile.
What are the advantages of a sweeper over sweeping with a broom?
In summary, the sweeper offers the following notable advantages over the broom:
- Quick and easy cleaning of large areas
- Uninterrupted use
- Simple operation
- Space-saving storage
Quick and easy cleaning of large areas
With a sweeper, you can clean dirty areas up to five times faster than with conventional brooms and dustpans. Sweepers can prove their worth especially on large areas. While working with a broom requires a lot of effort, especially on large areas, the sweeper does the job for you.
Sweepers do not simply push the dirt in front of them. The dirt is transported into a collection container, which, depending on its volume, allows it to be used for longer periods of time. It is therefore sufficient to empty the dirt at longer intervals.
Sweepers enable simple sweeping without any effort. In addition, the work does not have to be interrupted by laborious bending down to sweep up coarse or fine dirt with a dustpan, as is the case with a broom. Your back will thank you.
Sweeping brooms are helpless in the face of snow - not so sweepers. Many models come directly with a snow blade and thus also replace snow shovels. The multi-functionality of these cleaning devices not only enables you to clear your pavement of leaves and coarse dirt, but also guarantees that you can easily clear your driveway on cold winter days.
Whether environmentally friendly hand sweepers, petrol sweepers, street sweepers or truck mounted sweepers - today sweepers are available in all kinds of models. The large selection of sweepers allows you to purchase a sweeper tailored to your individual needs.
Sweepers can be easily and compactly packed away after use. Most models have a foldable push bar, which allows for space-saving storage.
How much does a sweeper cost?
Professional sweepers can be purchased in the three-digit range, whereas you should only consider buying industrial sweepers, which can even be in the four-digit range, if you are using the sweeper for a business.
All in all, we think that these prices for sweepers are reasonable if you need to sweep relatively often.
Manual sweepers start at 60 euros and are thus a really inexpensive way to reduce the amount of work you have to do each week. For battery sweepers, you can expect to pay a low three-digit amount, depending on the dealer. While petrol sweepers can only be purchased from 350 euros.
This makes petrol sweepers a more expensive purchase, but at the same time these models have a better cleaning and area performance than manual floor cleaning machines. Self-propelled sweepers are particularly suitable for professional industrial work. These professional machines are currently available from 800 euros, but the end is not yet in sight.
|Hand sweeper||approx. 60- 200 €|
|Battery sweeper||approx. 100 €|
|Petrol sweeper||from 350 €|
|Self-propelled sweeper||from 800 €|
Manual sweepers start at €70, but for higher quality battery or petrol sweepers you will have to expect a three-figure sum. The best sweepers for home use are available for around €140, while most professional sweepers are currently available for €400 and up.
Can I rent a sweeper?
Most of these are professional sweepers designed for cleaning very stubborn dirt. While sweepers for personal use usually fail on stubborn dirt, professional sweepers not only clean more thoroughly, but also larger areas.
The purchase of such sweepers is usually very expensive. If you only need the sweeper for a short period of time, it may be worthwhile to rent the sweeper instead of buying it.
Decision: What types of sweepers are there and which is the right one for you?
Basically, a distinction can be made between three different types of sweepers:
- Hand sweepers
- Battery sweepers
- Petrol sweepers
With each of these types, the functional process is slightly different, which brings individual advantages and disadvantages in each case.
Depending on the size of the area to be cleaned and the type of dirt to be cleaned, a different type of sweeper is best suited for you. In the following section, we would like to help you find out which type of swe eper is best for you.
To do this, we will introduce you to all of the types of cleaning machines mentioned above and clearly outline what their advantages and disadvantages are in each case.
How does a hand sweeper work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
As a classic sweeper, the hand sweeper is ideal for private use. Powered solely by muscle power, it is the most environmentally friendly sweeper.
The manual sweeper is considered a classic sweeper. It is usually equipped with a mechanical pick-up system and is driven by muscle power. As the first further development of the sweeping broom, it was merely expanded to include a rotating bristle roller and a collection container.
In the meantime, the mechanics of the hand sweeper have been refined more and more. In addition to bristle rollers, models with rotating disc brushes are now also available.
By definition, manual sweepers are characterised by a push bar that can be pushed on. The push bar is also height-adjustable, which has the advantage of enabling the user to operate the sweeper for a long time without subsequent back problems.
Hand sweepers are ideal for home use. They can handle small to medium-sized areas (1,500 to 3,500 square metres per hour) and are inexpensive to buy. Depending on the model and the soil conditions, they can easily cope with paved walkways, concrete and pebbles. However, many hand sweepers have to pass when cleaning stubborn dirt, such as wet leaves.
How does a battery sweeper work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Battery sweepers are motor-driven sweepers. This makes them more powerful than hand sweepers and, unlike petrol sweepers, they do not need fuel.
The battery sweeper has the advantage that it does not need fuel and is still powered by a battery-operated motor. With a sweeping capacity of 2000 to 3000 square metres per hour, the battery sweeper is not only more powerful than manual sweepers, but can also remove stubborn dirt in many cases. In terms of price, the battery sweeper is only slightly more expensive than the classic manual sweeper.
A disadvantage, however, is the battery life. This is between 40 and 90 minutes, depending on the model. The charging time is between five and nine hours. This is why the battery sweeper is more suitable for occasional private use.
How does a petrol sweeper work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The petrol sweeper is suitable for professional cleaning. Its engine makes it the most powerful sweeper in the comparison.
Petrol sweepers or motorised sweepers are the most powerful sweepers with the greatest area performance due to their powerful engine. They are in the higher price range of sweepers and start at around 400 euros. Many petrol sweepers have a forward and reverse gear for manoeuvring.
The collection container is 30 to 60 litres larger than on manual sweepers and can collect stubborn dirt, damp leaves and snow.
Another extra: the snow blade included for many models, which simplifies tedious snow shovelling and turns the sweeper into a snow shovel.
One disadvantage of petrol sweepers, on the other hand, is their weight. Unlike hand-held and battery sweepers, petrol sweepers have a petrol tank as well as an engine. In addition, the petrol sweeper is more susceptible to repair work due to its complex mechanics.
Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate sweepers based on these factors
In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate sweepers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular machine is suitable for you or not.
In summary, these are:
- Sweeping capacity
- Working width
- Collecting container
- Ground conditions
- Height adjustable bracket
In the following paragraphs you can find out more about the individual purchase criteria.
The area cleaning performance is undoubtedly the most important criterion when buying a sweeper. It provides information about the area that can be cleaned with the sweeper in one hour.
Therefore, it is particularly important to consider exactly how large the area to be cleaned is. For personal use, a manual sweeper that can sweep between 1,500 and 2,500 square metres per hour is usually sufficient.
By comparison, a simple hand broom only manages very small areas at around 150 square metres per hour. Battery sweepers have a similar area coverage as hand sweepers - but need to be recharged after a few hours of use.
If you need the sweeper to run a business or to clean very large areas, you should consider buying a professional sweeper. Petrol sweepers are a very good option here. They can sweep between 2500-8000 square metres per hour with great precision.
However, the greatest area coverage can undoubtedly be achieved with self-propelled sweepers. Depending on the speed, the area coverage increases to up to 140,000 square metres per hour.
|Type||Ease of cleaning|
|Hand sweeper||1,500-2,500 m²/h|
|Battery sweeper||1,500-3000 m²/h|
|Self-propelled sweeper||4,000-140,000 m²/h|
Note that a driver's licence may be required for self-propelled sweepers.
The general subdivision of sweepers also provides information about the drive of the sweeper. Sweepers can be manually powered, battery powered or petrol powered.
Manual sweepers are operated manually, while battery sweepers, as the name suggests, are powered by a battery. Petrol sweepers need a fuel to power the engine and do the work.
The manual sweeper is the most commonly used sweeper model for home use. It is inexpensive to purchase and requires very little maintenance due to its simple design. In addition, manual sweepers require neither a battery nor petrol. This makes them not only durable, but also the most environmentally friendly sweeper.
Battery-operated sweepers have the advantage that they do not need fuel and still work very powerfully and precisely. This is due to the battery-powered motor. Depending on the model, the battery life is 40 to 90 minutes.
If you plan to use the sweeper for a longer period of time, it must be recharged in the meantime. However, the battery-powered sweeper is suitable for sporadic personal use and delivers impressive results.
Sweepers powered by a petrol engine are very powerful. Hand and battery sweepers are hardly any competition for petrol sweepers. In addition to sweeping rollers and rotating disc brushes, petrol sweepers are often equipped with a snow blade, making them suitable for use as a snow shovel in winter.
The sweeping width is very often related to the area output. The greater the sweeping width, the greater the area coverage. Street brooms usually have a sweeping width of 30 to 40 centimetres, while sweepers have a sweeping width of 60 to 80 centimetres.
Sweepers are often also equipped with extendable bristles on the sides. These enable thorough cleaning, especially in the edges that are often difficult to reach.
The volume of the collection container is another very important purchase criterion. A larger volume of the sweepings container is advantageous. It has to be emptied less often than with a very small collection container volume. This enables you to sweep quickly and without interruption.
There are sweepers in all possible weight classes. From the manual sweeper, which can weigh just six kilograms, to the truck-mounted sweeper weighing several tonnes, everything is represented. So think carefully about where you will place your sweeper and what relevance the weight of the sweeper has for you.
For example, if you plan to store the sweeper in the basement, consider that you will have to carry the sweeper up and down the stairs every time you use it. If you have a garage space on the ground floor, you can also consider buying a heavier sweeper that you can simply push in front of you.
In general, hand sweepers are the lightest of the sweepers. They are closely followed by battery sweepers, which have an additional weight due to the integrated battery. Motorised sweepers are the heavyweights, as the engine and petrol tank generate additional weight.
Not every sweeper can develop its full poweron every type of ground.
Most sweepers perform very well on concrete and indoor floors. The reason for this is on the one hand the smoothness of the floor, but also that the dirt is usually dry and therefore easier to sweep up.
If the floor or the dirt is damp, it is worth buying a sweeper in the higher price category. The decisive difference to the simple sweepers lies in the length of the bristles.
Other difficulties for certain sweepers can be uneven floors, such as cobblestones. To remove the dirt completely, you either have to choose a sweeper with a stronger drive or accept a second pass to remove the stubborn remains.
You should make sure that the sweeper has a height-adjustable push bar.
Many sweepers have such a height-adjustable bar that can be adjusted to the height of the respective user. This guarantees back-friendly use for all users.
Furthermore, the push bar of many sweepers can also be folded down completely if necessary. This means that the machine can also be stored in a very space-saving way.
Facts worth knowing about sweepers
Where are sweepers most often used?
As floor cleaning devices, sweepers can be used in many different ways. From the pavement at home, on asphalt to the removal of construction site debris: there are sweepers for almost every conceivable type of dirt that can master the cleaning for you. All you have to do is choose the right model for you.
Is a driving licence required to operate mobile machines?
This depends on the maximum speed of the sweeper. Mobile sweepers with a maximum speed of six kilometres per hour do not require a driving licence. Anything above that requires at least a class L driving licence.
For mobile work machines with a speed of up to 25 kilometres per hour, a class L driving licence is sufficient in Germany. Faster working machines with a total permissible mass of 3,500 kilograms require a class B driving licence. Travelling machines with a total permissible mass of up to 7500 kilograms require class C1, everything above that requires C.
|Speed||Driving licence class|
|More than 6 km/h||Driving licence free|
|More than 25 km/h||Class L|
|Less than 25km/h and up to 3500 kg zG||Class B|
|Less than 25 km/h and up to 7500 kg zG||Class C1|
|Less than 25 km/h and over 7500 kg zG||Class C|
How do I clean a sweeper?
Now, after cleaning, the floor is clean but the sweeper is completely dirty. What can you do about it?
Sweepers are equipped with sweepings bins. The sweepings land directly in this container and can be easily removed and emptied without touching the dirt. If necessary, you can simply wash out the usually very robust plastic container with water.
Cleaning the side brushes is usually only necessary when they are very dirty. If this is the case, you should remove the side brushes from the sweeper and soak them in warm water. Afterwards, the dirt can be easily removed from the brushes.
Important: Let the brushes dry well after cleaning before using them again!
