Best Table Dishwasher: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for tabletop dishwashers

In the following, we show you which criteria you can use to decide on a suitable tabletop dishwasher. In summary, these are:

The following paragraphs explain the individual aspects in more detail.

Dimensions / width

The main difference between a tabletop dishwasher and a normal dishwasher is its size. It fits perfectly on a table and in small kitchens. If a normal dishwasher is too big for you, a tabletop dishwasher is the perfect alternative. Most tabletop dishwashers are 55 cm wide, 45 cm high and 50 cm deep. This means that the appliances are often no bigger than a microwave and therefore fit ideally into a kitchen cupboard. Despite the name, tabletop dishwashers are rarely placed on the dining table. When deciding on the depth of the appliance, you should make sure that there is still room for a hose behind the tabletop dishwasher. This is because the appliance must be connected to a water supply. Many manufacturers advertise that there is room for 6 place settings in a tabletop dishwasher. In practice, however, it has been shown that often only 4-5 can fit. A place setting includes 3 plates, a saucer, a cup, a glass and cutlery.

A place setting is a fixed number of dishes and cutlery. This term is commonly used to describe the capacity of dishwashers.

Energy consumption

An important criterion when buying a tabletop dishwasher is energy consumption. On the one hand, this is indicated with the help of the energy efficiency class, which shows the amount of power consumption. The better the energy efficiency class, the less electricity the tabletop dishwasher consumes. According to EU regulations, manufacturers must have at least an energy efficiency class of A+, which most table dishwashers now have. Table dishwashers are less energy-efficient than normal dishwashers, as these usually have energy efficiency class A++. Nevertheless, the smaller appliances require on average about 23 per cent less energy than hand washing. The electricity costs incurred by the energy consumption of the table dishwasher amount to about 50-70 euros a year. This depends on the frequency of the dishwashing cycles. So you should only turn on the dishwasher when it is really full.

Water consumption

Thanks to their compact design, tabletop dishwashers use much less water than conventional dishwashers. In this case, more than half the water is saved compared to washing dishes by hand.

Most tabletop dishwashers use approx. 6.5 to 9 litres of water per wash cycle.

Table dishwashers use only about half the water of a normal dishwasher. Most small appliances use about 6.5 to 9 litres of water per wash. In one year, with 280 wash cycles, that is an average of 1,800 to 2,100 litres of water. Modern dishwashers also have special eco-programmes that reduce water consumption. However, you should avoid pre-rinsing under running water, as this increases water consumption enormously.

Washing programmes

A table dishwasher cleans just as well as a conventional dishwasher. The dishes will be just as clean and sparkling. Just as with normal dishwashers, the little brothers need dishwasher tablets for the rinsing process. The length of the wash cycle is no different from a normal dishwasher, despite the smaller size of the appliance. As just mentioned, many modern tabletop dishwashers have efficient washing programmes. These eco or economy programmes work far more efficiently and quickly than the normal rinse programmes. This means they use less water and less electricity. When buying a tabletop dishwasher, you should therefore check whether it has such programmes. Table dishwashers usually offer 5-7 different washing programmes. You can find out exactly what these are in the description of the respective product.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a tabletop dishwasher

In the following guide, we answer the most important questions about tabletop dishwashers. This will give you a good overview.

What is special about a table dishwasher and who is it suitable for?

A table dishwasher is similar to a normal dishwasher. The difference is the size, because tabletop dishwashers are smaller and more compact. As the name suggests, it fits on a table or in a kitchen cupboard. It is therefore particularly suitable for small kitchens where there is a lack of space. Table dishwashers are particularly popular in the following households:

  • Single households
  • Student households
  • Senior households
  • Holiday homes, mobile homes
  • Office kitchens
  • Party cellars

Single-person households are usually small flats with small kitchenettes, which do not offer much space for a large dishwasher. A tabletop dishwasher is also more practical and perfectly adequate in terms of the amount of dishes. Students living alone often live in furnished flats in student accommodation with little space. Small tabletop dishwashers are also suitable for them, as they can be easily integrated.

Likewise, the tabletop dishwasher is suitable for seniors, as they often live in smaller age-appropriate flats and do not have a lot of dishes. In addition, a tabletop dishwasher makes household chores easier for seniors, as it saves them from having to do the dishes. Owners of boats, mobile homes and small holiday homes are also a target group. Because in these accommodations, too, there is usually a lack of space. Such a tabletop dishwasher is also popular in office kitchens.

What are the advantages / disadvantages of a tabletop dishwasher?

Due to its smaller size, a tabletop dishwasher naturally has a lower purchase price than a classic dishwasher. It is also cheaper than washing dishes by hand in the long run. Despite the small size, the cleaning effect of a tabletop dishwasher is very good and can keep up with a classic dishwasher. In addition, the table dishwasher is very mobile due to its size and can be integrated anywhere.
Advantages
  • Compact size
  • Low purchase price
  • Low water consumption
  • Mobile
Disadvantages
  • No space for pots / pans
  • Lower energy efficiency

Nevertheless, every tabletop dishwasher is as good as full with four place settings. There is usually no room for plates, pots or pans. The mini dishwasher is therefore only suitable for households with few dishes. The energy efficiency is also lower than that of classic dishwashers. On the other hand, tabletop dishwashers save considerably more water than classic dishwashers.

How do I connect a tabletop dishwasher?

Connecting a tabletop dishwasher is easier than with a classic dishwasher. It is usually connected via a water tap. The model usually includes an inlet hose and a corresponding connection piece.

To connect the table dishwasher permanently, attach the hose with the appropriate connector to the tap. To be on the safe side, you should test the construction before using it for the first time. Turn on the tap and see if any water comes out. You can also connect the table dishwasher to the water valve. To do this, you need an intermediate piece, which you can buy at a DIY store. You need this because the cold water inlet for the tap is already connected to the water valve.

So before you make a purchase, you should be aware of your connection options at home.

Is there a tabletop dishwasher without a water connection / with a water tank?

Table dishwasher without water connection

Like the dishwasher, the tabletop dishwasher always needs a water connection. This is because fresh water is needed to wash the dishes properly. Models that can clean dishes without water are not yet available on the market.

Table dishwashers with water tank

But there are certainly situations where there is no water tap nearby. This is the case when camping, for example. Some manufacturers therefore offer tabletop dishwashers with a water tank. The following table shows you the advantages and disadvantages of a tabletop dishwasher with a water tank:

Advantages
  • No water connection needed
  • mobile, can be used almost anywhere
Disadvantages
  • Electricity connection required

These tabletop dishwashers do not need a tap because they have an integrated water tank. Often, about 5 litres of water are needed. The dirty water comes out of the machine afterwards. You can then simply collect it in a bucket. However, there must be a power supply so that the machine can be operated and the water can be heated.

How do I clean a tabletop dishwasher?

A tabletop dishwasher also needs to be cleaned regularly to maintain its optimal cleaning power. If a wash programme takes longer than normal, the sensors may be broken. Most of the time, however, these sensors are just dirty. How to clean your tabletop dishwasher properly:

  • Filter cleaning: A tabletop dishwasher has two filters. One filter is coarse and catches larger items. The other is a fine filter that collects the small food scraps. These two filters clean the water that is pumped back into the circuit. These filters should be cleaned monthly, depending on use.
  • Interior cleaning: To clean the interior, it is recommended to run the empty tabletop dishwasher on a high temperature programme. You should use cleaning tablets or a few tablespoons of citric acid. Some models even have their own cleaning programme. You should also clean the door seals with a cloth.
  • Exterior cleaning: When cleaning the outside of the appliance, avoid aggressive cleaning agents and wipe the outside with a soft cloth and a mild detergent.
