The Best Testosterone Booster: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying testosterone boosters

What is testosterone booster and what is it for?

Testosterone is a hormone produced by men's bodies and, to a lesser extent, women's bodies. This hormone is responsible for male characteristics and growth.

Testosterone is very important for muscle mass, bones, mood, quality of life, facial hair, sex drive, verbal memory and thinking ability.

The production of this hormone steadily decreases in men as they age, causing several problems such as: increased fat content, reduction in muscle mass and strength, as well as other sexual problems.

Nowadays, there are a variety of solutions to combat declining testosterone levels, including test boosters. These supplements are formulated to stimulate the body's own production of testosterone.

Basically, testo boosters are natural supplements that can increase your testosterone levels. Ultimately, these supplements are designed to help with quick recovery, bigger and stronger muscle gains, body fat loss, and increased motivation and quality of life.

It's important to note that if you have low testosterone levels, you should talk to your doctor and run some tests to determine the best solution for your particular case.

How do testo boosters work?

Testosterone boosters have essential nutrients that help your body produce testosterone and LH (luteinising hormone). Most testo boosters work by directly increasing testosterone or related hormones, but some also help prevent testosterone from being converted to estrogen.

The ingredients in Testo Boosters are well researched and proven to increase testosterone levels. They are mainly (among others): maca extract, tribulus terrestris, L-arginine, ashwagandha, pine nut extract, ginseng and black pepper extract.

How should I take Testo Booster?

Each testosterone booster has a dosage and intake recommendation for when it should be taken. For this reason, it is important to always read the recommendations in the bottle.

Natural supplements are usually taken during the day before a meal or before going to the gym and are recommended in doses of 1 to 4 capsules, depending on the ingredients.

Testo Boosters with ZMA are usually recommended at night, and hormonal DHEA should be taken as prescribed by your doctor.

What are the side effects of testosterone boosters?

Since testosterone boosters are only responsible for increasing testosterone production, side effects may occur when testosterone levels are high.

These include: Sleep apnoea, acne and oily skin, enlarged breasts, increased hair growth and increased aggressiveness. In addition, male characteristics may become more apparent to women.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of testosterone boosters?

The advantages of testosterone boosters are first the natural ingredients that eliminate the side effects of steroids. Tribilus and ZMA, two of the most common ingredients in testo boosters, increase muscle growth and speed up recovery.

The supplement also helps increase energy and libido. Finally, it can help you with motivation, relaxation and stress relief.

On the other hand, increased testosterone levels can lead to increased aggression in men and increased masculine characteristics in women. Furthermore, you should always study the ingredients well before choosing the booster.

Finally, it is important that you never exceed the recommended amount of the booster and always follow the instructions to avoid complications.

What are the alternatives to Testo Booster?

If you suffer from low testosterone, you should first talk to your doctor about possible treatments for your specific case. In the case of hypogonadism (absent or reduced hormonal activity of the testes), you may need traditional testosterone therapy, which is carried out with the hormone supplement.

If you don't have hypogonadism but want to feel more energetic and youthful, the following alternative methods can help increase your testosterone levels without the use of hormone therapy or supplements:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exerciseregularly. Weight lifting can stimulate testosterone production. The key is to regularly move your body and use your muscles.
  • Sleep 7 to 8 hours every night. Lack of sleep affects the hormones in the body.
  • Take vitamin D. One ingredient that can increase testosterone levels is vitamin D. In one study, subjects were given vitamin D over a long period of time. As a result, the amount of bioactive testosterone in the blood of the test persons increased by about 20 percent (1).
  • Take more zinc.
  • Eat more nuts and beans. According to a 2009 study, they are rich in D-aspartic acid, which promotes the production of testosterone.

Also, although most testosterone boosters are natural, other foods, vitamins and herbs are also known to have the same properties. You can see some examples in the table below:

Herbs Vitamins Food
Malaysian Ginseng Vitamin D Garlic
Puncturevine Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Tuna
Ashwagandha Zinc Egg Yolk
Pine Bark Extract Oysters
Yohimbe
Saw Palmetto

Decision: What types of testosterone boosters are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, we distinguish between these types of testosterone boosters:

  • Natural / Herbal
  • Hormonal (DHEA)

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. In this way, we want to help you find the best testosterone booster for you.

What distinguishes a natural testosterone booster and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Herbal testosterone boosters consist of natural ingredients such as maca extract, ginseng, ashwagandha, tribulus terrestris, fenugreek and many others.

Advantages
  • It is not a hormone
  • It boosts testosterone production
  • It is a herbal product
Disadvantages
  • The effects on testosterone levels are not proven

Consumption of these herbal supplements has two main benefits: they stimulate androgen secretion and inhibit androgen degradation.

With a blend of the most potent micronutrients and phytoandrogens, herbal testosterone boosters do not deliver external testosterone to the body, but only help optimise the body's own (internal) processes to increase testosterone levels.

What distinguishes a hormonal testosterone booster and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A hormonal testosterone booster is a dietary supplement that contains DHEA. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that plays a role in increasing testosterone and controlling estrogen levels.

Advantages
  • It is a hormone produced by the body
  • it benefits people with low levels of DHEA and testosterone
Disadvantages
  • The effects on testosterone levels are not proven
  • It is not suitable for professional athletes

Due to its biological effects, DHEA has become an extremely popular way to increase testosterone.

Several studies have shown that 50 - 100 mg of DHEA per day can increase testosterone levels by up to 20%. It is often recommended for people in their late thirties and older, as DHEA levels tend to decrease.

The problem is that the effects of DHEA on testosterone levels are not clear. As with some other supplements, people with low DHEA or testosterone levels may benefit.

The use of DHEA is prohibited in professional sports and therefore not suitable for competitive athletes!

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate testosterone boosters

In the following we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate testosterone boosters. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective product.

In summary, these are:

  • The uses
  • The ingredients
  • The dosage vs. price

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a product based on the criteria or not.

Intended use

Testosterone boosters can be taken in various situations: Illnesses (low testosterone levels), improvement of general well-being as well as muscle building and strength gain and fast recovery in weightlifting and strength training.

If you are concerned about low testosterone, see a doctor first. As older men have low testosterone, some symptoms, such as reduced muscle mass, increased body fat or erectile dysfunction, may indicate other conditions.

You may be interested in increasing your testosterone levels if your doctor indicates that you have low levels or hypogonadism, or need testosterone replacement therapy for other conditions. In this case, your doctor should recommend the best solution for you.

If you want to take testo boosters to improve your well-being and performance in the gym, you should try the natural herbal supplements that have been shown to significantly improve and increase testosterone levels.

Ingredients

Natural testo boosters are differentiated mainly based on the main ingredients. Usually 9 different main ingredients are used (some boosters also contain a combination of the different ingredients):

    • Maca extract / powder
    • Tribulus Terrestris
    • D-Aspartic Acid

L-Arginine

  • Fenugreek
  • Ginseng
  • Ashwagandha
  • ZMA

Maca Extract / Powder

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a tuberous plant rich in essential nutrients that grows high in the Andes. Extracts from the root provide the body and mind with renewed energy and vitality.

Its phytonutrients help to tone male and female hormonal systems, have aphrodisiac effects, improve mood and are suitable for treating all kinds of hormonal disorders, anaemia (iron deficiency) and bone fragility (osteoporosis). Reduced bone density and anaemia caused by testosterone deficiency can therefore also be treated with maca, as it increases the transport of proteins in the body.

However, the sole positive effect of Maca on testosterone levels is not promising. In a study with 57 men, only an increase in sexual desire was found, but not an increase in testosterone levels (2).

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is the extract of a plant from Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia that contains steroidal saponins. Saponins can increase testosterone production.

Bodybuilders consume 300 to 600 mg of Tribulus per day to increase testosterone levels, improve muscle mass, fat loss, strength and endurance. Tribulus works through its active protodioscin to increase testosterone levels by stimulating the pituitary gland.

As with most other testosterone boosters, Tribulus appears to have benefits in patients with low testosterone or impaired sexual function, but appears to have no effect in individuals with normal or healthy testosterone levels.

D-aspartic acid

D-aspartic acid is an amino acid present in human neuroendocrine tissues that plays a role in the synthesis of luteinising hormone (LH) and testosterone. Therefore, it can raise low testosterone levels.

It works mainly by increasing follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone.

The following study describes the role of D-aspartic acid in regulating the release and synthesis of testosterone in men and rats. Here, a slight increase in the testosterone levels of the test subjects was observed (3).

L-arginine

L-arginine is used to increase blood flow by stimulating the production of nitric oxide in the endothelium of blood vessels, which may help with erectile dysfunction. As a result, L-arginine does not increase testosterone levels, but it does improve the symptoms of low testosterone, particularly erectile dysfunction.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is another popular herb used in testo boosters.

Some studies suggest that it reduces the enzymes that convert testosterone to estrogen. 500 mg of fenugreek per day appears to be effective for increasing testosterone levels and sexual function in deficient and healthy men.

It may also improve energy levels and well-being, as well as increase libido.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a root commonly consumed in Asian foods and drinks, but it is also a powerful nutrient that has many healthy physiological functions.

Ginseng directly stimulates the central nervous system and gonadal tissue and can facilitate erections in men and increase libido and testosterone levels.

Ginseng also contains ginsenosides, which increase the conversion of arginine to nitric oxide, building muscle mass.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is yet another herb used in testosterone boosters. It helps the body cope with stress.

In addition, it has also been shown to increase average testosterone levels 10-22%, as well as improve exercise performance, strength, fat loss, and reduce the stress hormone cortisol.

ZMA

ZMA is a testosterone booster that consists of three different ingredients: Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B6. These three ingredients have been shown to increase free testosterone levels by up to 30%.

ZMA is useful for all athletes as it protects against the depletion of these three important minerals and vitamins that often occurs after an intense or prolonged workout.

Zinc is a micromineral involved in the action of several hormones, including insulin, growth hormone, testosterone and oestrogen. Zinc deficiency is directly related to reduced levels of male sex hormones. Conversely, sufficient intake can reverse this condition and correct the deficiency (4).

Magnesium is a macromineral involved in amino acid activation and smooth muscle and protein synthesis. Magnesium deficiency can affect testosterone levels and muscle growth at many different levels.

Vitamin B6 has important effects on protein synthesis. It is necessary to reduce the effect of certain catabolic steroids such as glucocorticoid hormones (cortisol). This can increase the ratio of testosterone to cortisol, which can lead to positive muscle building effects.

Dosage vs. price

Since testo boosters can contain many different ingredients, prices can vary. On the other hand, it is important to analyse the relationship between dosage and price before buying the booster.

Since the recommended dosage is usually between 3 and 4 capsules per day and most bottles contain around 90 to 150 capsules, we have calculated how much a natural testo booster would cost per month:

quantity price
capsules for 1 month approx. 12 - 40 €
