Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before you buy a Thermomix
What is a Thermomix and why do I need one?
The various functions of a multifunctional kitchen appliance differ slightly depending on the model, but in principle you can have your Thermomix do a wide variety of different kitchen tasks. Among other things, it usually does the following:
Almost all machines consist of a pot with a built-in heater and an integrated rotating blade set and a motor and control unit on which the pot can be placed and removed.
The blade set can usually be replaced by different attachments, so you can also use the other functions. Steam cooking is made possible by a special attachment - in the Vorwerk model with the "Varoma" attachment.
Many Thermomix models also have an integrated scale so that you can measure out the ingredients easily and precisely. Some appliances can even be connected to the Wi-Fi network, so you can easily download recipes from the Internet to your appliance and cook them with ease.
What can I use a Thermomix for?
You can use a Thermomix to prepare starters, soups, baking, steaming, dressings, many varieties of main dishes and side dishes and also many different desserts.
There are no limits to your imagination, the Thermomix supports you in your kitchen work and makes many steps easier.
According to the manufacturer Vorwerk, their kitchen appliance can perform the following work steps: Stirring, cooking, kneading, chopping, mixing, beating, emulsifying, grinding, mixing, steaming, weighing, sautéing, caramelising, fermenting and sous-vide cooking.
In this table we explain some of the terms mentioned:
|Caramelising||By heating sugar strongly and dry, i.e. browning it, it becomes liquid and caramelised. In the process, it changes colour, becomes brownish and acquires a typical roasted aroma. Depending on how strongly the sugar was heated, caramel tastes sweet to bitter.|
|Emulsification||Emulsification is the mixing of two liquids of fat and water that are not in themselves miscible, such as vinegar and oil, milk or mayonnaise. These can be combined by vigorous stirring or whipping.|
|Fermenting||Fermenting involves adding a layer of salt to food and placing it in a closed container. This causes lactic acid bacteria to form and the food is preserved for a longer period of time.|
|Sous-vide cooking||This term stands for so-called low-temperature cooking of fish, meat or vegetables in a plastic bag over a longer period of time. This prepares the food particularly gently and gives it a very tender consistency.|
What can a Thermomix for children do?
With the Thermomix for children, children can easily prepare milkshakes or simple doughs. It comes with a stirring attachment, a spatula and a steamer attachment. The appliance has a much lower power rating because it runs on batteries.
What Thermomix models are there?
Below we have listed a brief overview of the different Thermomix models from the manufacturer Vorwerk and what functions they have:
|Thermomix model||Year of introduction||Functions|
|TM3300||1982||This first model of the Thermomix did not yet have a scale, a display or a stirring function. However, it could heat and mix up to 12,500 revolutions per minute.|
|TM21||1996||This second generation already had a scale and a display and a larger mixing bowl of 2 litres. In addition, the maximum motor power was increased to 600 watts.|
|TM31||2004||With this model, the gentle stir function was used for the first time to mix ingredients without chopping them. In addition, the programme was expanded by many functions.|
|TM5||2014||With this model, the volume of the mixing bowl has been increased and the maximum cooking temperature has also been increased and is now 120 degrees. The measuring accuracy of the scale has also been improved to 5 grams.|
|TM6||2019||The latest Thermomix model has an even more accurate scale and can also be connected to the WLAN. This means you can easily download recipes from the Internet to the Thermomix and cook them again.|
How much does a Thermomix cost and can I finance it?
The Thermomix from Vorwerk costs a hefty 1400€ and is therefore at the top end of the price scale.
However, there are also alternatives to this high-end kitchen appliance, which we will introduce to you in the next paragraph.
If you would like to buy a Vorwerk Thermomix but cannot pay for it right away, the Akf Bank of Vorwerk also offers you a leasing contract.
This way, you can comfortably pay a small sum every month and, depending on the term, the appliance will be yours after a certain period of time.
What alternatives are there to a Thermomix?
Alternatives to multifunctional kitchen machines are hand mixers, hand blenders, all-purpose slicers or choppers. There are many different smaller kitchen gadgets that make individual steps easier or let you do them more effortlessly.
You should consider in advance for what purpose you want to buy a Thermomix or whether a smaller kitchen gadget is also suitable.
Decision: What types of Thermomix are there and which is the right one for me?
Basically, a distinction can be made between the following types of Thermomix:
- Thermomix 5
- Thermomix 6
In the coming sections, we will go into more detail about the two Thermomixes and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
What distinguishes a Thermomix 5 and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The Thermomix 5 has a large fan base that appreciates this model for its high reliability. It is also a little smaller and lighter than its successor model.
Another advantage is that the purchase price is lower than for the TM6. In addition, there are even more extensive accessories for the TM5 than for the successor model.
A big disadvantage of the TM5 is that it has fewer preparation functions than the TM6 and you can't use slow-cooking preparation forms with it.
In addition, the measuring range of the scale is less accurate, which can be a disadvantage for some recipes.
What distinguishes a Thermomix 6 and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The latest Thermomix model from Vorwerk has received some improvements and you can now also use some slow-cooking functions.
Other advantages of the TM6 are that the measuring range is more accurate to 1 gram and the display is larger and has a higher resolution. This makes it even easier to use and you can cook the recipes more easily.
The disadvantages of the TM6 are its slightly larger dimensions, greater weight and higher purchase price. In addition, the TM6 consumes a little more electricity than its predecessor.
Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and rate thermomixers
In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the variety of possible Thermomix multifunctional kitchen appliances.
The criteria with which you can compare the different Thermomix multifunctional kitchen appliances are:
- WLAN connectable
In the following paragraphs, we will explain to you what is important in the various criteria.
This function is included in some Thermomix multifunctional kitchen appliances and makes your work much easier. You don't have to use a scale and put the ingredients into the machine, but can put them directly into the pot.
Many Thermomix appliances have an integrated scale. You can set this to zero (= tare) and thus weigh your ingredients very precisely and work exactly according to the recipe.
This function is especially helpful if you are preparing a dough or want to cook exactly according to a recipe. If you only use your Thermomix appliance for chopping and mixing, you can also consider buying an appliance that does not have this function.
Most older kitchen appliances and even very basic Thermomix multifunctional kitchen appliances cannot heat their contents. However, this function is extremely useful for preparing a wide variety of different dishes.
If you want to prepare soups, sauces or simply warm dishes with your Thermomix appliance, you will not be able to avoid buying an appliance with this function.
With this you can easily heat, warm and also cook your chopped and mixed ingredients. The advantage is that you don't have to take them out of the appliance and put them into a pan or pot, but can cook them directly in it.
There are also some appliances that have an attachment for steam cooking. You fill the pot underneath with water, the appliance heats it up and you can steam your food in the attachment above.
At first glance, this function sounds very logical and obvious for a Thermomix multifunctional food processor, but it is not always so.
With most machines, you can chop your ingredients, but you have to change the machine's attachment to whisk them.
However, there are some appliances, for example the Thermomix from Vorwerk, where the chopping attachment not only rotates in one direction, but can also be switched to the other direction.
This means you don't have to change the attachment, but can simply change the direction of rotation after chopping and mix your ingredients together.
This function is one of the basic actions of multifunctional kitchen appliances. Most models have this function, but the cutting result sometimes differs significantly.
When buying, you should pay attention to the motor power of your Thermomix appliance and the maximum number of revolutions of the appliance. The higher the motor power and the maximum speed, the more powerfully it cuts even harder ingredients. But that is not the only decisive factor.
Make sure that the cutting blades are of a high quality and that they come in different versions. This way you can create different cutting sizes for your ingredients.
Why should I be able to connect my food processor to the Wi-Fi network? Well, it makes it even easier to recreate recipes! If your Thermomix multifunctional food processor can be connected to the Wi-Fi network, you can have the individual recipe steps displayed directly on the appliance and follow them.
This makes cooking much easier, as you don't have to use a recipe book, tablet or mobile phone to display the recipe, but can simply have it shown to you on the display.
If you use the recipe portal Cookido from Vorwerk with its Thermomix, all you have to do is add the ingredients one by one and follow the individual steps on the display - cooking has never been so easy.
