Tiger Grass: Our Selection

Buying and evaluation criteria for tiger grass products

Tiger grass is an exotic medicinal plant that is offered under many names. If it says Gotu Kola, Centella Asiatica or Indian pennywort, it contains tiger grass. When buying the plant, pay attention not only to the name, but also to the following aspects:

If you take these purchase criteria into account, you can choose the product that best combats your complaints. Misuse can be avoided and high quality should be guaranteed.

Dosage form

Tiger grass can be used in many ways, both internally and externally. This is also made possible by the fact that it can be processed into several dosage forms.

Gotu Kola can first be purchased as a fresh plant. This can be eaten raw, processed into dishes or used to make other forms of administration.

Tea or oil can be taken in liquid form. If you want to avoid the taste of the herb, you can swallow tablets or capsules. However, there are people who find this rather difficult.

Powder or extract of tiger grass is the most versatile, because you can take it in liquids as well as in solid meals.

It can also be processed into creams and lotions. These are then applied externally.

Which form of administration is best for you depends on the effect you want to achieve. The form of administration then determines to a large extent how you can take the herb.

Origin

Tiger grass originally comes from India. In the meantime, however, it thrives in numerous tropical and subtropical regions. When buying tiger grass, it is therefore important to know where it comes from. Even more important, however, is the manufacturer's point of view.

European producer

In recent years, tiger grass has become increasingly popular. This has boosted processing in European countries. Even the choice of German manufacturers is unexpectedly large. Advantages and disadvantages distinguish products from the EU.

Advantages
  • Support European companies
  • Better working conditions
  • Monitoring and guidelines for guaranteed pollutant-free cultivation and processing
Disadvantages
  • No traditional processing
  • No own cultivation
  • High price

If you want to be sure that the production is subject to certain guidelines so that the tiger grass is free of harmful substances and fair, a European producer should be chosen. Most of the end products here are also offered in organic quality and fair working conditions in the cultivation areas are guaranteed.

Non-European manufacturer

For the traditional experience of the exotic plant, you should continue to reach for non-European products. However, there are often hardly any guidelines on cultivation or processing.

Advantages
  • Traditional production and processing
  • Local cultivation and processing
  • Low price
Disadvantages
  • No European companies
  • Uncertainty about working conditions
  • Hardly any monitoring and guidelines for guaranteed pollutant-free cultivation and processing

If you inform yourself in detail, you will find high quality at low prices despite the lack of control. In Madagascar, for example, tiger grass is cultivated on a large scale.

Dosage

The dosage of tiger grass can vary. This is especially the case with capsules. Find out exactly how much of the active ingredient is contained. If the dosage is lower, the tablet is often enriched with other additives. This is reflected in the price, because a higher concentration is usually more expensive.

Powders, extracts and teas are not pre-dosed. You can determine the amount you want to use yourself.

Be sure to follow the dosage recommendations so as not to risk any side effects.

Lotions and creams are not pre-dosed for the individual applications either, but they contain different amounts of tiger grass extract. The more it contains, the higher the quality and effectiveness of the product, but also the higher the price.

Quantity

The quantity of the product can vary. Regardless of the dosage form, you will find large and small packs of almost everything. 90 or 180 capsules? 100 or 200 grams of tea? Ask yourself how much you really need before you decide.

Small packs are especially good if you want to test the product first.

That way, it's not a big loss if you stop using it after a few times. In the long run, larger packs are recommended because they are ultimately cheaper.

Large stock packs also save you time and effort. You rarely have to go out to get a refill. However, if you store them for a longer period of time, be sure to check the shelf life. This varies greatly from one dosage form to another.

Other ingredients

Besides Gotu Kola, no other ingredients should be included if possible. The pure product is the most effective. This is usually the case with tea, powder and extract, but with capsules and especially with creams, the addition of other substances cannot be avoided.

  • Capsules: The capsule shell is usually made of gelatine. Vegetarians must pay attention to whether this is vegetable or animal. The active ingredient is often enriched with other substances such as calcium, leucine, magnesium or zinc.
  • Creams: Moisturising creams are enriched with other herbs and substances to achieve a better effect. These include glycerine, betaine, aloe vera, liquorice, vitamin E, various oils and more. In addition, they are usually water-based.

If more additional ingredients are included, the product becomes cheaper. However, the effect of Gotu Kola is weakened and the quality is often lower. Make sure that only natural, important substances have been added.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about tiger grass products answered in detail

Tiger grass still sounds exotic to you? Here is a summary of all the important information about this medicinal plant. You will be brought up to date with the current state of science and all important questions about the effect and application will be answered.

What is tiger grass and what active ingredients does it have?

Tiger grass was discovered many years ago in India. Today, the plant is increasingly gaining ground in European naturopathy under the names Gotu Kola, Centella Asiatic or Indian pennywort. But what is behind these names?

The inconspicuous-looking leaves of the herb have been used in medicine for a long time. Today, studies are trying to prove the effects that are attributed to the plant. (Image source: Acircleblue Studio / Unsplash)

Even if the grass appears inconspicuous, it is rich in valuable ingredients. Their concentration varies from plant to plant. They are so numerous that only the most important ones are listed:

  • Vitamin A, B, C and E
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Beta-carotene
  • Arginine
  • Alkaloids
  • Steroid saponins
  • Triterpenes (2)
  • Polyphenols and flavonoids (vegetable oils)

Due to the trace elements, vitamins and minerals, tiger grass is considered particularly healthy. The alkaloids, steroids and terpenes are said to have medicinal properties. (1)

The herb is often given the title of superfood. According to a Chinese legend, it also contains the youth vitamin X. This is said to be found nowhere else. This is said to be found nowhere else and to help one achieve outstanding longevity.

Tiger grass is one of the most important and healthiest medicinal plants from the swamps of Asia

Due to the great effects that Gotu Kola is said to have through the substances it contains, it has been an important component of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

In the Indian healing art of Ayurveda, Gotu Kola has been used even longer. Tiger grass is used here as a spiritual herb that can unfold its effect in connection with motivation and revitalisation.

After tiger grass reached Europe, you can now find it in numerous cosmetic products and in alternative medicine. The following shows why tiger grass is expected to have a great added value in these areas.

How does tiger grass work?

What can the superfood tiger grass do? Numerous studies have looked into the various properties of the medicinal plant. Some of them have been confirmed, but most of them require further research.

In addition, studies are often only available on animals, which is why the effect on humans is debatable. Here we will take a closer look at the current state of science. You will learn about the presumed as well as the proven properties of Gotu Kola.

Effects on the skin

Creams and lotions are mainly used for the skin. You can make these yourself from Gotu Kola extract or buy them ready-made. Tiger grass is considered a great ingredient because it is said to have the following effects:

  • Anti-ageing and skin-firming: Gotu Kola is said to have rejuvenating properties. It is said to tighten the skin, moisturise and remove dark sun or age spots. Triterpenes are also said to stimulate blood circulation, which can advance the regeneration of the skin. (7, 9)
  • Wound healing and scar reducing: The madecassoside and asiaticoside contained in tiger grass seem to promote wound healing. The triterpenes are said to help form new connective tissue and strengthen the skin. (4, 5, 6)
  • Anti-inflammatory: Irritation and inflammation of the skin may be reduced by Gotu Kola. Titerpenes are said to prevent antioxidant reactions. (4)

The anti-inflammatory function is not only useful for external complaints, but can also help with any kind of internal infections.

Tiger grass is said to be able to improve the appearance of the skin. In addition to the triterpenes, ingredients such as the antioxigens and saponins are probably effective.

A study also found that a lotion containing gotu kola, among other ingredients, can help with weight loss.

Thigh circumference, fat mass and wrinkles seemed to be reduced more by the cream than in the test subjects who only used a placebo. In combination with a diet and an exercise programme, tiger grass should also be able to support weight reduction. (3)

Effect on the brain

In the old Indian tradition, tiger grass was often said to promote intelligence. In fact, it is said to have positive effects on the brain and cognition:

  • General improvement of cognitive performance: In general, it can be said that mental performance can be improved by treatment with Gotu Kola. This is probably possible due to the vitalisation of nerves and brain cells and stress reduction. (12)
  • Improving memory: Gotu kola is said to improve memory. The recall of memories from the memory can be accelerated. The learning function is said to be supported so that more content is stored in the memory. Studies are currently trying to find out the exact mechanism that leads to this. Stress reduction could possibly play a decisive role here as well. (12, 13)
  • Anxiolytic: Gotu kola is said to be able to prevent the effect of harmful free radicals and oxidative stress (through antioxidant action) and thus relieve anxiety. Ingredients such as triterpenoids are said to contribute to this. (14, 15, 18)
  • Antioxidant and stress-relieving: Tiger grass is thought to be able to lower the stress hormone cortisol while increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine. The antioxidant effect alleviates stress caused by oxidation. Asiaticoside and saponins are said to calm the nervous system. (13, 17, 18)

The stress-relieving and antioxidant effects are crucial. They contribute significantly to other properties. The anxiolytic effect, for example, would probably not come about without the antioxidant property.

Further effects

In addition to the properties already mentioned, Gotu Kola not only supports the skin and brain. At the same time, it is also said to have a positive effect on the circulatory system and to be detoxifying.

  • Supports the circulatory system: veins and atria walls are strengthened and blood cell regeneration is promoted. The blood flow is stimulated and more oxygen is transported through the body. In this way, more oxygen also reaches the brain, which could contribute to the positive influences there. (10)
  • Antifungal and anti-inflammatory effect: Gotu Kola has a potentially defensive effect on fungal infections and can fight them. (19)
  • Detoxifying and diuretic: Salt, water and fats can be flushed from the body by taking Centella Asiatica.

The effects of Gotu Kola are versatile. Depending on which ones you want, you have to choose the appropriate dosage forms. Due to the different effects in different areas, tiger grass can be used for numerous complaints. You will find out which ones in a moment.

For which complaints is it useful to take tiger grass?

Tiger grass is used internally and externally for a wide variety of complaints. It is said to be able to alleviate and combat some diseases. Increasingly, studies are being conducted to confirm the possible uses of Centella asiatica.

Use for skin complaints

Tiger grass is becoming more and more important in cosmetics. It is a component of many moisturising creams that are used for ordinary skin care. Special lotions can also be used to combat specific complaints.

Complaints Effect State of research
Acne The anti-inflammatory effect is to be utilised. Skin and tissue regeneration is to be stimulated in order to prevent scarring The specific application in acne has been little studied. However, there are some studies that confirm the wound-healing and scar-reducing effects. (5, 8)
Stretch marks and cellulite The skin-firming and smoothing properties are said to reduce or prevent these complaints. The regeneration of the skin is said to be supported studies on humans confirm above all the wrinkle-reducing and skin-firming effect. (7, 9)
varicose veins tiger grass presumably leads to an improvement of the connective tissue, which increases the quality of the vascular walls and thus reduces varicose veins studies show that mainly triterpenes are effective. These were conducted as human studies and the results are easily transferable. (10)
Wound healing disorder, burns and scarring Wound healing is said to be stimulated especially by collagen production. In addition, the formation of connective tissue is said to minimise the formation of hubs In research, this effect in particular has been frequently investigated. In addition to some animal experiments, the effect on humans has also been tested and largely confirmed. (4, 5, 6)

One study also came to the interesting conclusion that tiger grass can help with discomfort caused by long-distance flights. It is said to be able to strengthen veins, preventing the accumulation of water in the legs and reducing the resulting tension on the skin.

If further studies confirm this result, it is also a useful finding for use with water retention in old age. (11)

Use for cognitive complaints

The positive effect on the brain is used with regard to some complaints. After a stroke, cognitive performance in general is said to be regenerated and improved. (12)

In particular, Centella asiativca is thought to have a supporting effect in combating stress, anxiety and depression:

complaints Effect State of research
depression Due to the relaxing and nerve-calming effect of tiger grass, it is said to be able to be used in the treatment of depression Up to now, unfortunately, few studies have been conducted on the antidepressant effect. The results already available are mostly based on subjective assessments of the test persons or animal experiments. (14)
Stress and anxiety disorders Through treatment with Gotu Kola, anxiety is said to occur less quickly and frequently. The stress-relieving and antioxidant effect of the medicinal plant is said to be responsible for this several studies on animals as well as on humans have already confirmed this effect. (14, 15)
Sleep disorders The effects of Centella asiatica, which can alleviate depression and anxiety, are also said to help with sleep disorders. If symptoms of stress and anxiety are alleviated, this often leads to better sleep A few more studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness in sleep disorders. Moreover, the few that have been conducted are not human studies and the transferability is debatable. (18)
Memory loss, Alzheimer's and dementia By regenerating nerves and brain cells, as well as improving memory and other cognition, Centella asiatice is thought to be useful for memory problems such as Alzheimer's. Research in this area is still relatively in its infancy. Some studies have already investigated the memory-improving effect, but not in connection with Alzheimer's disease. In addition, mostly animal experiments have been carried out. (13, 16)

Studies in this area have mainly been conducted on animals. Therefore, the effect in humans is debatable and further studies are needed. Especially in the field of Alzheimer's research, this could lead to a breakthrough in medicine.

Application for other complaints

In addition to the central application areas of skin and brain, tiger grass can also help with completely different complaints:

complaints Effect
infectious and fungal diseases The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal effect helps against fungal infections or diseases such as cholera, syphilis, flu or tuberculosis (19)
joint and muscle complaints such as rheumatism, arthrosis or arthritis The anti-inflammatory effects of Gotu Kola are said to be able to relieve the symptoms of these diseases (20)
Gastrointestinal complaints Complaints resulting from stress can be reduced by Gotu Kola's antioxidant property. (17, 18)
Cardiovascular complaints (high blood pressure, risk of thrombosis, venous insufficiency) by supporting the cardiovascular system, blood flow is said to be stimulated and controlled(10)
Urinary tract disorders due to the draining and diuretic effect, the body can be freed from harmful substances.
Colds and respiratory diseases such as asthma the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect is said to be able to help here.

For all these areas of application, there are still few studies available that explain or confirm the effects. More research is needed to arrive at reliable results.

However, the current state of science already predominantly assumes positive effects of Centella asiatica on health. An expert can help you decide whether the use of a product with tiger grass makes sense for you.

What are the possible side effects of using tiger grass?

If you use tiger grass correctly, you should not experience any side effects. It is especially important that you do not overdose the active ingredient. It is also possible that you are allergic to one of the active ingredients. This can lead to the following symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness and drowsiness
  • Gastrointestinal complaints
  • Nausea
  • Itching and rashes

Studies have also shown that in rare cases liver damage can occur. (21) However, the findings differ greatly here.

A study on rats is even said to prove that the active ingredient can help with liver damage. (22) Clear results are still lacking, which is why liver-damaged people are advised not to take it.

Steroids, terpenes and alkaloids are the most important active substances of the Gotu Kola plant. However, these also cause the slight toxicity and lead to the undesirable side effects when consumed in excess.

Internal use during pregnancy is not recommended. It is not certain whether this is harmful, as there is a lack of experience in this regard.

In addition, tiger grass should not be consumed for at least two weeks before an operation. It may not be compatible with other medicines due to its sedative effect.

If you are going to use Gotu Kola for a longer period of time, you should consult an expert. After 6 weeks, it is also recommended to take a break of two weeks.

If side effects occur, you should definitely stop taking the herb. The herb must also be stored out of reach of children so that they do not inadvertently take too high a dose.

What types of tiger grass are there?

The different types of tiger grass products can best be distinguished by their dosage forms.

In moisturising creams, Gotu Kola extract is often found among the ingredients. Especially the positive effects of the plant on the skin are supposed to be used. (Image source: Andi Whiskey / Unsplash)

Whether powder, capsules, oil, tincture, tea, creams or the fresh leaf is decisive. They are decisive for specific properties and for the respective area of application. This form of administration also determines how you can take the active ingredient.

Choose the tiger grass product that promises the best help based on your complaints.

Type Advantages Disadvantages
Tiger grass capsules / tablets As a dietary supplement, capsules are very easy to take with meals. You can easily carry them anywhere and the amount is already dosed. By swallowing quickly, you do not taste the herb's flavour, which usually takes some getting used to In rare cases, the capsule shell is made of animal gelatine, which is why it is not vegetarian. The scope for individual dosage is very small. Due to the complex production process, you have to invest a relatively high amount.
Tiger grass powder The powder is ground from the dried plant and very rarely contains additives. As a food supplement, you can mix this particularly pure product into dishes, smoothies or fruit juices. The price-quality ratio is excellent the powder often changes the taste of the food you take it with. In addition, it can be easy to take the wrong portion, as the amount of the loose powder is difficult to estimate.
Tiger grass cream / ointments In moisturising creams Gotu Kola supports the skin. The application is simple and external, which avoids the unpleasant taste Creams never consist entirely of tiger grass, but usually contain only a very small amount. However, this can quickly give the product a strong smell. You must always pay attention to which additives the creams are enriched with.
Tiger grass tincture The alcoholic herbal extract is versatile. It is used internally by adding water or juice, but can also be mixed into creams and used externally due to the alcohol content, the extract is not suitable for children and some adults. There are only a few alcohol-free variants. You have to be very careful with the dosage.
Tiger grass plant Whether bought or home-grown, raw cut and dried leaves are the cheapest way to get Gotu Kola. In salads or dishes, the leaves can contribute an interesting flavour and can be consumed largely unnoticed Ingestion options are very limited. Mainly tea is made from the raw herb, the taste of which is rather unpopular. Moreover, the absorption of the effect is low.

Again, the desired effect, as well as preferences for ingestion, will determine which type is ideal for your complaints. Feel free to consult an expert if you are unsure.

How do I take tiger grass?

The many forms of Gotu Kola may have already given you an idea: There are numerous ways to take the medicinal plant. It is best to follow the recommendations on the package leaflet to avoid side effects.

Capsules are best swallowed with meals. Creams are spread on your skin. In the evening and in the morning for quick care, or for an extensive treatment in the form of a face mask. With these types, the intake options are quite clearly limited. But if you have the extract, powder or raw leaf, you can do a lot with it.

Fresh or dried tiger grass is often used in the kitchen. However, this is mainly because of the promised effect rather than the taste.

You can mix the powder into salad dressings, smoothies, juices or your muesli. The fresh leaves from the garden are great for cooking in vegetable pans or sprinkled on salads. You can find several recipes on the internet that use tiger grass.

Whether you treat yourself to a full load of gotu kola or prefer to avoid the taste with capsules is largely up to you. However, the desired effect is also decisive.

The best way to brew tea is from the raw leaves. Boil them at 100 degrees for at least 10 minutes so that the active ingredient can fully develop. (Image source: Oriento / Unsplash)

If you want to support wound healing, tiger grass in a salad is of little use. You can, however, pour yourself some soothing baths. Expert advice can help you find the best solution not only in terms of taste but also in terms of health.

How should I dose tiger grass?

The correct dosage of tiger grass depends largely on the dosage form and the desired effect. Dosage recommendations should always be found on the packaging. If you are unsure, it is best to ask an expert for advice.

You can also use these guidelines as a guide:

The guideline of 3 grams of Gotu Kola per day should not be exceeded.

As already mentioned, the dosage of capsules and tablets varies. Depending on this, you should not take more than two or three a day. Since powder usually consists entirely of tiger grass, you can simply follow the guideline here.

Per drink, muesli or meal, you should mix in a maximum of 0.9 to 1 gram three times a day. If you brew tea, do not drink more than 2 cups. For tincture, you should use a maximum of 30 drops per day.

Since the amount of tiger grass in ointments and creams is usually very small, their dosage is not very limited. It is best to test yourself to see how much is good for your skin.

What alternatives are there to tiger grass?

Besides tiger grass, there are other natural herbs that are said to have similar effects. Their uses are not completely the same as those of gotu kola, but they are very similar.

Alternatives Description
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) It is a South Asian medicinal herb that is used in Ayurvedic medicine. The most important active ingredient is saponin, which is said to stimulate brain activity. As with Gotu Kola, it is said to improve memory. It is also said to counteract sleep problems, stress and depression. Brahmi is also said to have an anti-ageing effect in creams. (23, 24)
Ginkgo Biloba This herb contains active substances that have a positive effect on long-term memory. Brain activity is stimulated. It is also said to be able to prevent Alzheimer's by preventing the formation of harmful proteins. (25)

Besides the alternatives listed here, there are other herbs that can be used for one of the specific effects of Centella asiatica. These rarely have the all-round abilities that Gotu Kola has. It is best to consult a healer to find the best active ingredient for you and your symptoms.

What does tiger grass look like and where does it grow?

If you know the effects and applications of tiger grass, it doesn't hurt to be able to identify the plant. Its botanical name is Centella Asiatica.

Gotu Kola is an inconspicuous, green plant with round, creeping leaves that belongs to the group of sweet and ornamental grasses.

The herb grows up to 20 centimetres high. The leaves are hairy on the underside, up to 4 centimetres wide and show a navel in the middle.

It thrives in tropical and subtropical areas on marshy ground on river banks or in rice fields. It is found in Pakistan, China, Japan, Africa and tropical America at altitudes of up to 1900 metres. Tiger grass spreads there with stolons up to 250 centimetres long, covering large areas of ground.

Did you know why Gotu Kola is also called tiger grass?

In Japan, it is said that tigers roam the forests looking for the sweet grass. It is said that the big cats do this when they are wounded. If they find it, they roll around in the herb because they hope it will have healing effects. After this behaviour was observed, the herb was given this additional name. Gotu kola definitely grows in the habitat of tigers, but the origin of the name is not proven.

In July and August, tiger grass produces flowers in small groups of 2 to 4 umbels. They are white with a slight violet or pink tinge. They eventually develop into two-part, hairy split fruits. The plant is often grown in greenhouses and gardens.

How can I grow tiger grass myself?

You don't have to buy tiger grass processed. The nutrient-rich leaves are easy to grow yourself. You can cultivate the seeds.

However, this requires some botanical experience, which is why it is advisable to plant pre-cultivated plants. Pots and containers or gardens and greenhouses are suitable, as long as certain criteria are met.

Gotu Kola always needs sufficient water. You need to provide continuous moisture.

It is most important that the soil of the grass never dries out. Direct sunlight should be avoided, otherwise the plant will die quickly.

Under trees, the light is ideal because it only falls through the foliage in small speckles. A warm environment is also essential. It is best to overwinter tiger grass indoors to protect it from frost.

In spring you can move it outside to give it plenty of space. If you find seeds on the plant, bury them. They will then grow faster and the herb will spread further. From a design point of view, this is great, because the grass will green up bare ground.

You can harvest it at any time of the year. All parts of the plant can be used raw or dried. The leaves are particularly suitable. If you cut them off, they quickly grow back again.
