The Best Toilet Seat: Our Choices
In the following, we have selected a few products for you that, in our opinion, reflect different products and give a good overview of the toilet seat market. This selection of products should support you in your search for the right toilet seat.
Buying and evaluation criteria for toilet seats
To help you find the right toilet seat for you, we have worked out a few buying criteria that you should look out for when buying a new toilet seat. These should make your choice easier and show you which aspects you may overlook or not consider. These are the criteria you should consider when buying a new toilet seat:
You can choose from different types of material:
Wood: A toilet seat made of wood has many advantages. Firstly, it is made of a renewable raw material and the surface is easy to clean. Another advantage is that every toilet seat is unique due to the wood grain and you can choose from different types of wood, so there is something for everyone.
A wooden toilet seat also has a warm feel and some types of wood have the advantage that they have a germ-inhibiting and antibacterial effect.
Although wood is not as durable as the following plastic alternatives, it has the advantage of being recyclable. Finally, remember that a wooden toilet seat requires a little more maintenance than the others.
Thermoplastic: Thermoplastic is very resistant, long-lasting and dimensionally stable. Even though it has perfect attributes for a toilet seat. It also has many disadvantages that are rather unsuitable for private use. For example, toilet seats made of thermoplastic scratch more quickly than those made of thermoset. However, the plastic is cheap to produce and is therefore well suited for gastronomic operations. In addition, thermoplastic is recyclable and resistant to chemical cleaning agents. In contrast to wood, thermoplastic has a rather cool seating feel.
Thermoset: Like thermoplastic, thermoset is hard-wearing, durable and dimensionally stable. However, it is even more robust because the material can no longer be deformed once it has cooled down after production. Similar to thermoplastic, thermoset is resistant to cleaning agents and has a cool seat feel. However, thermoset feels a little more valuable and is somewhat reminiscent of glass.
Polyresin: Polyresin is easy to clean and resistant to chemicals. The surface of the material is also rather cool. Toilet seats made of polyresin are usually cast in moulds and can have different colours. Since transparent colours are also possible, various objects such as shells can be enclosed in them. Toilet seats made of polyresin are therefore suitable for different motifs.
MDF: MDF stands for "Medium Density Fibreboard" and consists of a wood core made from wood scraps. These toilet seats are usually lacquered and, like polyresin, can have different motifs. Like wood, MDF offers a warm seating feeling, but is not too durable like the plastics because it is susceptible to moisture.
Toilet seats often differ in size, so when buying a new seat you need to consider several things. It is best to try and buy a seat that is flush with the rim, as the size and shape of toilets are not standardised this is harder than you might think.
However, common shapes and sizes have become established, making this a little easier. If you are buying a new seat, you should first determine the length of the seat, the width of the seat and the distance between the holes in your toilet.
Not only the size of the toilet is important, but also the shape. Since toilet shapes are not standardised, there is a wide range to choose from. The most common shapes are the D-shape, the O-shape and the V-shape.
When buying a toilet, make sure you know exactly which shape is right for your toilet. The length of the toilet is the distance from the front edge of the toilet to the centre of the holes. For the width, you measure the thickest part of the toilet and for the drill holes, you measure the distance between the two centres of the drill holes.
The distance between the drill holes can usually vary slightly and the manufacturers specify a minimum and maximum distance. Try to match the measurements as closely as possible, otherwise your toilet seat may protrude. This can also lead to a wobbly seat or to the seat not being able to be fitted at all.
The bracket is the most important component when buying a toilet seat and is often overlooked. For example, a poor support can lead to a sliding seat or prevent the toilet lid from opening and closing easily.
You should also pay attention to the threaded rod used in the mounting, in the past these were made of metal, but as there is usually high humidity in the bathroom, or water and urine can drip onto the toilet seat, these are often corroding. Therefore, in newer toilets, these are usually made of plastic, which prevents rusting.
Other special features
There are now some gadgets that make using a toilet seat easier. A widespread example of this is the automatic lowering system, which prevents the toilet lid from banging loudly. It ensures that the toilet lid lowers slowly when dropped until it hits the toilet seat.
Other special features include quick-release fasteners that allow the seat to be removed for fast cleaning and booster seats that make sitting down and standing up easier.
There are also toilet seats that are suitable for families with small children, in that they have a child seat integrated into the seat and additional armrests, which again make it easier to stand up.
Guide: Frequently asked questions about toilet seats answered in detail
The following section gives you an overview of the most important questions about toilet seats.
How often should you change the toilet seat?
Otherwise, a toilet seat made of plastics (thermoplastic, duroplastic) or polyresin usually lasts until it is broken. Toilet seats made of wood don't last as long, because they can get soaked with moisture. But otherwise, with regular cleaning, a toilet seat will last until it breaks.
Why does the toilet seat slip?
If you don't have a suitable tool for this at home, you can get an installation spanner for the toilet in any DIY store. If the toilet quickly starts to wobble again, it may be that something was forgotten during assembly. C
heck the hinge to see if all washers are present and nothing has been forgotten. Another reason could be a broken hinge, if this is the case you can look for spare parts on the internet or maybe it is a good time to buy a new toilet seat.
How does a toilet seat with soft-closing mechanism work?
The automatic lowering mechanism ensures that the lid lowers slowly onto the seat. This causes less noise and also protects the material from damage.
What does a toilet seat cost?
|Price range||Product features|
|Thermoplastic (15 - 35 €)||Cheaper production than thermoset, but therefore somewhat less resistant, very durable, cool seat feeling|
|Duroplast (30 - 50€)||Resistant and durable plastic, cool seat feeling|
|Wood (30 - 50€)||sustainable raw material, less durable than plastics, warm seat feeling|
|MDF (25 - 35€)||Use of wood residues, less durable than plastics, warm seat feeling, mostly with designs|
|Polyresin (30 - 40€)||durable and resistant, cool seating feeling, many different design possibilities|
You can see that toilet seats made of thermoplastic are the cheapest, which makes them particularly interesting for catering establishments. With the exception of MDF, all other materials have somewhat higher prices. A higher price usually means that more functions such as soft close etc. are available.
How do I care for a toilet seat?
For deep cleaning, cleaning agents containing acetic acid or citric acid are used. For this type of cleaning, a few drops on the toilet lid and the toilet seat are sufficient. Rub them together and wipe both with a damp cloth and water.
From time to time, a more intensive cleaning should be done. This takes a while, because the cleaning agents need to work in first. For intensive cleaning, first loosen the toilet lid and clean it with warm water. You can do this while spraying the seat with vinegar or lemon cleaner after removing the lid.
The cleaners should be left on for an hour. You can loosen heavy soiling with a soft sponge. Once the cleaning agents have taken effect, you should clean the glasses again with hot water so that all the cleaning residue has disappeared. Then you can mount everything again.
How do I install a new toilet seat?
Now it's time to loosen the screws and remove the old seat. Now is the perfect time to clean the bowl and the boreholes of the toilet. Now comes the installation of the new seat. First you put the threaded rod into the designated place on the seat, where the hinges are also located. Then put the sealing rings on the threaded rod.
Now position the toilet seat so that the threaded rods fit through the holes in the toilet and tighten the screws from below using the rubber seals provided. Before finally tightening the screws, it is best to check once again whether the seat is correctly positioned.
Caution: The installation may differ depending on the hinge. Before each installation, take a look at the enclosed instructions.
When buying a new toilet seat, the most important thing is to find the right one for the bowl. Then you should think about what material it should be made of and whether you want a certain design or colour. Once you have determined all these things, you can look for a suitable seat on the market.
Personally, we advise you to get a toilet seat that has a soft close mechanism and can be removed. This reduces scratches and noise when using the toilet and makes it easier for you to clean the toilet intensively, which you should do regularly.
