Tower Fan: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a tower fan

What is a tower fan?

Tower fans are one of many ways to provide improved room temperature. Also found under the synonyms tower fan and column fan, the tower fan impresses with an appealing design. Due to its compact column shape, this fan takes up little space and can be easily integrated into any room interior.

The foundation is often a stable stand. The tower fan does not have the telescopic rod that is usually used for floor fans as a connecting piece between the base and the housing. Instead, there is a smooth transition.

In conventional floor fans, rotor blades generate the air flow. There are no rotor blades in the housing of tower fans. Instead of rotor blades, a lamella construction is responsible for air circulation. On the back of the tower fan, this lamella construction draws in room air. This blows the air out again over the entire height of the front.

The tower fan thus offers the advantage of a more extensive air distribution in the room compared to other fans. It is not possible to lower the room temperature with a tower fan. However, a good tower fan is able to provide an improved room climate.

Who is a tower fan suitable for?

Basically, a tower fan is suitable for anyone who wants to improve their indoor climate in a pleasant way. Especially people who are sensitive to heat and tend to sweat in too warm room conditions benefit from the large-scale air circulation.

Thus, thanks to the space-saving and portable tower fan, the benefits can be enjoyed in several areas of life. Thanks to the relatively low noise level generated by a tower fan, the product is ideally suited for air conditioning in offices.

Thus, neither an unpleasant room climate nor a high noise level distracts from concentrated work. Especially in summer, a tower fan in the bedroom is a space-saving way to fall asleep more easily despite high temperatures.

Here, too, you enjoy the advantage that the tower fan produces little noise that could disturb your ability to get some rest. A tower fan with integrated timer function is recommended for this occasion.

A tower fan has no rotor blades on which children can injure themselves.

The housing offers fewer risk factors for small children. With fans of other types, there is a not inconsiderable risk of injury due to the rotor blades. This risk is eliminated by the absence of rotor blades in the tower fan.

Nevertheless, you should take care to place the column fan in such a way that no cables become a tripping hazard.

What does a tower fan cost?

Tower fans are more complex in design and construction than other fan models and are therefore somewhat more expensive than table or stand fans. On the other hand, they are available with many different functions. So there is something for every need and every price.

At the same time, you should not make the quality of the tower fan solely dependent on the price; much more important are your individual requirements that you place on your future ventilator.

The cheapest models can be purchased for just a few euros. These are sufficient for a start, but are usually inferior to more expensive products in terms of functionality and performance. It is important to note that any delivery costs can make up a considerable part of the total price.

If you plan to use your tower fan frequently over a longer period of time, you will find models for 50-100€ with a good price-performance ratio. You will usually pay a higher price for tower fans from renowned brand manufacturers.

Different models of column fans sometimes differ significantly in functionality, design, performance and other relevant features. For the most modern models, manufacturers charge around 300€.

For a good tower fan, good models can already be found for 50-100€. Since there is a wide range of functions in tower fans, an expensive price does not always have to mean good quality. Make sure you only buy the features you really need to save on unnecessary expenses.

How many watts should a tower fan have?

Especially when the tower fan is busy air-conditioning the room around the clock in summer temperatures, this can be noticeable on the electricity bill. A good tower fan should offer you a power of about 45-60 watts.

However, the optimal wattage of a tower fan cannot be generalised. Again, the optimal wattage depends on your individual needs. If you want to place your tower fan in the bedroom, too high a wattage runs the risk of making too much noise. In addition, continuous use of high wattage tower fans can result in higher electricity bills.

When buying, consider the size of the room you intend to use the tower fan in. The larger the area to be air-conditioned, the higher the output should be. This is the only way to ensure that the circulated air spreads throughout the entire room.

What alternatives are there to a tower fan?

Nowadays, there are many different ways to bring a room down to a comfortable temperature or to improve the indoor climate.

Fans are ideal to additionally support your room temperature control.

In general, all types of fans should not be regarded as a substitute, but rather as a cheaper alternative to (much more expensive) air conditioning. Especially in the summer, fans can provide additional, inexpensive relief in rooms with a poor temperature.

Alternatives to the tower fan are logically other types of fans. Each alternative has its advantages and disadvantages compared to the column fan.

Alternative Difference to tower fan
Table fan Smaller and less powerful
Floor fan Has rotor blades and is less visually appealing
Ceiling fan Is fixed to the ceiling and is not portable

Table fan

Table fans are the smallest and most compact way to improve the indoor climate by circulating air currents. The electronically operated fans can be placed on any table or cabinet and are very portable due to their small size. For the same reasons, table fans are usually rather low-powered and can rarely ventilate an entire room.

Advantages
  • Small and compact design
  • Low acquisition costs
Disadvantages
  • Relatively short range
  • installation options are limited

Pedestal fan

The stand fan comes closest to the tower fan in terms of design with its narrow and elongated construction. Compared to table fans, upright fans have a telescopic pole. This has the advantage that stand fans are adjustable in height. As a rule, floor fans are more powerful than table fans and are able to supply a large area in the room with air flows.

Advantages
  • Height is adjustable
  • High range
Disadvantages
  • High background noise or noise level
  • Visually not very attractive

Ceiling fan

The ceiling fan has a decisive difference to the alternatives presented so far. This fan is fixed to the ceiling of the room to be ventilated. This positioning ensures that the fan supplies the entire room with the air currents it generates.

(pixabay.com / funeyes).

However, a certain ceiling height is necessary to install a ceiling fan. You should also be aware that you cannot transport this fan from room to room.

Advantages
  • High room coverage
  • Very quiet
Disadvantages
  • Not portable
  • High initial cost

Decision: What types of column fans are there and which one is right for you?

There are few different types of tower fans. They only differ in their various combinations. Basically, tower fans can be divided according to their functions and the following categories:

  • Tower fan with integrated timer function
  • Tower fan with oscillation function
  • Tower fan with humidifier function
  • Tower fan with heating function
  • Tower fan with ionisation function

These functions can appear either individually or in combination in different tower fans. Nevertheless, we will introduce you to the individual functions below.

Type Function
Integrated timer Tower fan turns itself off after a pre-selected time
Oscillation Oscillations cause the housing to rotate in a certain area
Humidifier Water droplets are distributed through the fan in the room and humidify the air
Heating function The room temperature can be adjusted both downwards and upwards (usually up to 30°)
Ioniser The fan provides air purification by electrically charging the air

Tower fan with integrated timer function

This function is interesting for all users who buy a tower fan as a sleep aid. Depending on the model, you can determine when your tower fan should switch off automatically (from 30 min. to 8 hrs. for the top models). With this function, you can optimise power consumption, as the tower fan will switch to standby mode shortly after you fall asleep.

However, if you are a very light sleeper and react strongly to changing conditions, this function might not be beneficial for you. When the timer expires, the fan switches off with a beep. There is also no more air flow, so that in the worst case, the warmer room climate will bring you back from sleep.

Advantages
  • Convenient use
  • Energy-saving
Disadvantages
  • Beep sounds when switched off

Tower fan with oscillation function

With a tower fan, the oscillation function ensures that the unit automatically rotates from one place to another. In practice, this means that the air flows are distributed in a variable range (usually between 45°-180°).

If you are in a room with several people, everyone now enjoys the advantage of having fresh air blown around their ears. The larger the area in which the tower fan blows, the more evenly the fresh air reaches the entire room. At the same time, individuals have to wait longer for the wind to reach the same place again.

Advantages
  • Wind distribution is more even
  • advantageous for rooms with several people
Disadvantages
  • Unpleasant squeaking noises can occur
  • No constant ventilation in the same place

Tower fan with humidifier function

With the humidifier function, a water tank is also integrated into the tower fan. From this tank, the water is distributed in the room in addition to the wind, so that a pleasant humidity is created.

The combination of tower fan and humidifier allows you to enter the ventilated room in a pleasant climate, especially in summer. However, you should be aware that this type of tower fan requires regular cleaning. Otherwise, there is a risk of bacteria and fungi forming, which you certainly don't want in your room.

At the same time, be careful where you place this tower fan. Especially in the vicinity of moisture-sensitive electrical appliances, its use is not recommended.

Advantages
  • Combination of ventilation and humidification to be used especially in summer
  • May offer health benefits (e.g. for dry mucous membranes)
Disadvantages
  • Regular cleaning
  • condensation can endanger moisture-sensitive objects

Tower fan with heating function

An integrated heating function in some models allows you to use your tower fan not only in summer but also in colder seasons. In most cases, temperatures of up to 30° can be generated.

Nevertheless, you should be careful not to rely exclusively on such a tower fan if you want to bring your room to a warmer climate at lower temperatures. There is also a risk of the unit overheating if it is used continuously.

Advantages
  • Tower fan can be used all year round
  • cheap alternative to fan heaters
Disadvantages
  • Threatens to overheat with prolonged use

Tower fan with ionising function

A tower fan's integrated ioniser works like an air filter with the advantage that there are no filter inserts that you have to replace. This saves time and money, as replacement filters are often very expensive.

The ioniser charges molecules in the air into negative ions. These absorb harmful substances and deposit them on the ioniser bar. Thus, the surrounding air is freed from pollutants and at the same time the odour is neutralised.

In principle, ionisations are useful for everyone. Especially in urban areas close to road traffic, such a function is certainly useful. Likewise, for people who are sensitive to pollen or other pathogens, an ioniser can provide relief.

Advantages
  • Pollutants are removed from the air
  • Useful for allergy sufferers
Disadvantages
  • Harmful ozone is produced as a by-product (hardly ever found in the most modern devices)

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate column fans

In the next sections we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible tower fans. The criteria you can use to compare the tower fans with each other include:

For each criterion, we show you what to look for in your purchase.

Noise level

It is a well-known problem with fans. The noise level, not infrequently cited as the number 1 annoyance factor with fans, often creates an unpleasant side effect. If you increase the noise level by 10dB, you actually feel as if the volume doubles.

If you lower the volume by 10dB, it feels like the background noise has been halved. To keep the volume at a level that corresponds to a normal conversation between two people, the editors recommend about 60 dB.

Especially for the bedroom, you should aim for a lower volume. Most tower fans are in the range between 50 and 70 dB, which is about the same as the room volume.

Of course, you can try to optimise the volume afterwards by placing the tower fan as far away from your head as possible. However, at the same time you run the risk that the effect will no longer be fully effective.

Increasing the noise level by 10 decibels feels to you as if everything is happening twice as loudly. Therefore, even small differences in the indicated volume of the device can be clearly noticeable. If you are particularly sensitive to noise levels, it is better to choose the quieter version.

Power consumption

Especially if you plan to use your tower fan frequently over a longer period of time, it is definitely worthwhile to choose a power-saving device. As a rough rule of thumb, you can assume that the power consumption increases with increasing wind strength and running time.

Turmventilator-3

Table fans of this size definitely have low power consumption. At the same time, this model is not very powerful and only provides you with fresh air over a short distance
(unsplash.com / Siniz Kim).

That's why you should definitely pay attention to the power consumption when buying a fan, as even small differences in frequent use will be noticeable on the electricity bill at the end of the year. Go ahead and dig a little deeper into your pocket and buy a higher-quality tower fan. These are often better made and operate more energy efficiently than cheaper alternatives.

Precision speed settings

You're probably familiar with this problem from one shower or another: There is simply no setting that adjusts the water to the perfect temperature. The water comes out of the tap either far too cold or boiling hot. Your tower fan should also know a middle ground between the settings "lukewarm breeze" and "tornado".

The more different settings your tower fan offers, the more variably you are equipped for different weather conditions. With many different levels, it is even possible to create a kind of wind through various sequences of different intensities, which provides a pleasant room climate at recurring intervals. Basically, you should be well prepared with three different wind intensity settings.

Functionality

As already explained, there are a variety of additional functions that tower fans can offer you. You should be clear beforehand which functions you want in your tower fan and which you definitely do not need. Unnecessary features will only increase the price of your tower fan unnecessarily. Therefore, be aware that a high price does not necessarily mean high quality.

Facts worth knowing about the tower fan

How do I transport my tower fan?

Tower fans are designed to be transported. For this reason, they are comparatively lightweight. Some models even have an extra carrying handle so you can move them from room to room with ease.

Where do I place my tower fan?

Make sure that you do not place your tower fan where you could trip over cables. To allow the air generated by the tower fan to flow freely in the room, avoid placing your unit in front of large pieces of furniture that could obstruct the airflow.

If you plan to place your fan in the bedroom, it is advantageous to place it at some distance from your bed. This way you will avoid too much noise in your immediate vicinity.

For tower fans with integrated humidifiers, there are a few additional things to consider. Please do not place them near moisture-sensitive objects (especially electrical appliances). These could otherwise be seriously damaged.

Corners in the room are particularly suitable, from where the air can be distributed throughout the room. Of course, you should never place the tower fan in such a way that the cables become a tripping hazard. There should also be no obstacles in the immediate vicinity of the column fan that interrupt the air flow.

How do I clean a column fan?

As with all other electronic devices, the following also applies when cleaning a tower fan: Please switch off the device and unplug it beforehand! The more often and the longer you use your tower fan, the higher the wear and tear.

You can counteract this with regular cleaning. If stains form, you can use normal household wipes. Disinfect your tower fan at regular intervals. This prevents the formation of bacteria, especially in the case of tower fans with humidifiers.
