Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a travel buggy

Travelling with a baby or toddler should be fun for everyone. Therefore, it is important that you are optimally equipped. A travel buggy is a great relief.

Unlike a pram or pushchair, it can be folded down to a small size and is therefore very easy to transport. Thanks to the large selection available today, it is relatively easy to find the perfect travel buggy for you.

Depending on the age of your child, it is important to pay attention to a reclining position. But other factors, such as pack size, weight and sun protection, also play an important role in the selection process.

What distinguishes a travel buggy?

It is not easy for parents to get an overview of the extensive world of pushchairs and prams. They are often faced with the question of where exactly the difference is between a jogger and a buggy, a pushchair and a travel buggy.

A travel buggy is a pushchair that has a very low weight and a small pack size.

The aim of a travel buggy is to keep the weight under 6 kg if possible and, given the packing dimensions, perhaps even to be taken in hand luggage.

But even if you are looking for a buggy that doesn't take up too much space in the boot, for example, it can be important to take a look at travel buggies. The travel buggy is often seen as a complement to the pushchair or the classic buggy.

It has the advantage of a small size, but sometimes offers reduced comfort for you when pushing it and also for your child when sitting or lying down.

However, a lot has changed in recent years. Many travel buggies are now equipped with practical and comfortable features.

When do I need a travel buggy?

Parents usually invest in a pushchair that can later be converted into a pushchair and assume that they will be able to use it until the end of the pushchair's life.

In principle, this is also possible. The comfortable pushchairs are very suitable for children and offer optimal suspension.

However, at the latest when the first big trip with a child is coming up, it quickly becomes apparent that a normal pushchair also takes up a lot of space. It doesn't matter whether you want to go on holiday by car, train or plane. This is where the travel buggy comes into play.

Even if you travel a lot by car and don't always want to put the pushchair in the boot and take it out again, a travel buggy can be very suitable as a car stroller. It is therefore recommended for all active families who want to save space and weight.

What features should a good travel buggy have?

Exactly what features your travel buggy should have depends on your expectations and also the intended use. If you only need it for short distances, for example, small wheels with a rather clear suspension are sufficient.

If you use it more often and for longer distances, larger wheels can offer much more comfort. Below you will find an overview of the different features that a travel buggy can have and their advantages for you and your child:

Function Advantages
Adjustable seat and lying surface It is much more comfortable for the child if the seat and lying surface can be adjusted. If you want to use the travel buggy before the child is seated, it should be possible to adjust it to a straight reclining position.
Simple folding mechanism You have the travel bag in one hand and now you have to fold the buggy? Then a simple folding mechanism is a great help for you, some models can be folded with one hand.
Sun protection A travel buggy should not be without sun protection., As children's skin reacts particularly sensitively to UV radiation, extensive protection is absolutely recommended.
Large basket The basket is of course an extra that is not important to all parents. Nevertheless, it can be very helpful to have a large basket under the pram, which has space for a change of underwear, but also for toys and for drinks.
Adjustable pusher An adjustable pusher is still a rare feature in travel buggies. However, it can be very useful, especially if the parents have a difference in size.
Suspension Even if the travel buggy is often used for short distances, your child should be able to enjoy the highest possible comfort. This is provided by a suspension.
Swivelling front wheels With very small travel buggies, the front wheels may not be movable. This is especially difficult when you want to steer around corners and can mean that the buggy can only be pushed with two hands.
Low weight this feature is particularly important for a travel buggy and should be a priority when choosing one.
Safety bar and harness Safety plays a particularly important role when it comes to choosing a travel buggy, so you should make sure that a good harness system is available. The protective bar is not found on every buggy, but it can also be very practical.

Decision: What types of travel buggies are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between six different types of travel buggies:

  • Detachable travel buggy
  • Foldable travel buggy
  • Cane stroller
  • Travel buggy with swivelling wheels
  • Travel buggy with full-length handle
  • Stroller with two handles

What are the advantages and disadvantages of detachable travel buggies?

Some detachable travel buggies offer more comfort because they have a larger seating area. However, they are not quite as easy to handle. The problem is that they cannot be folded.

Instead, you take off the seat part and then fold only the frame. They are rarely offered as travel buggies. In the meantime, however, there are also variants that are very light and small.

  • Relatively comfortable
  • seat and frame can be stowed separately
  • large seat area
  • Not quite as small when folded
  • mechanism for reducing size is complicated and requires more effort

What are the advantages and disadvantages of foldable travel buggies?

The folding travel buggy is particularly practical, which is why it is usually also offered as a pushchair for travelling. You can fold the entire pushchair in a few easy steps and have it in a compact size.

Depending on the model, the folding mechanism can work differently. With some models, all you have to do is press a button and the travel buggy is folded. Other versions can be reduced in size using several levers.

  • Easy to handle when folded
  • Compact size possible
  • Can also be stowed in small areas
  • Mechanism not always easy

What distinguishes cane trolleys and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

The cane trolley takes its name from the fact that it has the shape of a cane when folded. The mechanism is therefore designed in such a way that the trolley is folded in half.

A cane trolley is usually very narrow and small and for this reason it is rather less comfortable, but it can be very suitable for travelling.

  • Very small and handy
  • Particularly lightweight models
  • Easy to fold
  • Little seating comfort
  • Little comfort when pushing
  • Hardly any suspension

What are the advantages and disadvantages of travel buggies with swivelling wheels?

The front wheels of a travel buggy with swivelling wheels can be moved. This means that when you push and steer the pushchair, it automatically goes in the direction in which it is being moved.

This means that you can usually push it with one hand. The handling is particularly easy.

  • Very flexible in terms of mobility
  • Easy to push
  • Wheels can also be locked
  • Depending on the tyre size, it can be difficult to push the pushchair on some surfaces

What distinguishes travel buggies with a continuous handle and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A travel buggy should not only be comfortable for your child, but also for you. You have to push the pushchair. Therefore, a look at the pusher is definitely recommended.

A full-length handle has the advantage that you can push the pushchair easily with just one hand. However, the travel buggy may not fold as compactly.

  • Very suitable for easy steering
  • A wide continuous handle offers you a high level of comfort
  • Available in different widths
  • May affect the compact size of the pushchair

What distinguishes travel buggies with a two-handle and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

The other variant with a handle is the two-handle. In this case, the pushchair has two handles for pushing, so to speak. You can grasp the handles very well, but you usually need two hands for steering. It is a question of personal taste which of the handle variants you prefer.

  • Very good grip for the hands
  • Optimal handling and good steering
  • Steering with one hand is not possible

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate travel buggies

In the following we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate travel buggies. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular travel buggy is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Weight
  • Dimensions
  • Comfort
  • Safety

To ensure that you and your child are really satisfied with the travel buggy, it is particularly important that you take enough time when choosing the model and then calmly decide which buggy it should be. The following buying criteria can help you with this.

The weight of a travel buggy is a particularly important factor. Especially if you want to take the pushchair with you in your hand luggage on an aeroplane, you should bear in mind that it must not weigh more than 10 kg.

But in general, a lightweight travel buggy is also an ideal choice for travelling, as it is less of a burden for you. The weight of a travel buggy depends on the material it is made of and what additional features it has.

You can find models that weigh as little as three kilograms. But travel buggies weighing up to 10 kg are also available.

The dimensions can also be important when travelling by air. The individual airlines have similar dimensions that they specify for hand luggage.

Always look at the unfolded size of the travel buggy, as this can indicate how long the push handle is and whether it can be adjusted.

It is important that your travel buggy does not exceed these dimensions in length, width or height. So check the packing dimensions before you buy.

Your child should feel comfortable when sitting in the travel buggy. Comfort is therefore a purchase criterion that should definitely be taken into account. This already starts with the seat, the backrest and the adjustable options.

How far can the backrest be adjusted? Several levels are good, because you can adjust the pram to your child's needs.

This also applies to the footrests. As your child grows, he or she will need much more space, so the footrest should be as foldable as possible. Comfort also means good suspension. It is unpleasant if your child notices every bump when travelling in the travel buggy.

A good suspension absorbs and reduces the energy. When it comes to comfort, you should also pay attention to the factors that are important to you. This could be the material of the push handle. But sufficient storage space is also important.

When it comes to safety, there are several factors that may be of interest to you:

  • Harness
  • Seat bar
  • Sunshade

A 5-point harness is a particularly good solution and can also be found on most travel buggies. Your child is not only secured over the shoulder, but also over the pelvis. This prevents little climbers from getting out of the harness and standing up in the buggy.

The seat bar can be a further protection against unintentional getting out of the buggy. It is also an additional factor in comfort, as your child can hold on to it. You can also attach toys or a drink holder to the seat bar.

The sunshade is an important safety feature for your child's skin.

Make sure that the sun canopy is large enough to protect your child from harmful UV rays.

Facts worth knowing about the travel buggy

For many parents, a travel buggy is a welcome alternative to a normal pushchair. But before you start looking, here are a few interesting facts that may influence your decision.

Is a travel buggy suitable for everyday use?

Basically, you can use a good travel buggy for everyday use. The models available on the market today are very well equipped and offer a very high level of comfort for you and your child. The situation is different if you like to do sports with your child.

Mum-fit classes or even a jog in the woods are not recommended with a travel buggy. The problem is that strollers aren't designed for fast-paced sports and don't offer the flexibility, suspension and safety you need. So it is better not to use them.

Can my child get into the travel buggy from the start?

It depends on the buggy you choose when you can put your child in it. The manufacturer will give you an indication of how long the buggy can be used. This is usually stated as "from birth to 3 years" or "6 months to 3 years". It is interesting to ask what the difference is between travel buggies.

This difference can be found in the position of the backrest. In models that can theoretically be used from birth, the backrest can be adjusted to a complete reclining position. This is important so that your baby can adopt the correct posture.

Models from the age of six months cannot be brought completely into the reclining position. Therefore, they may only be used from sitting age. However, not every baby is able to sit by itself at six months.

Therefore, it is up to you to decide whether you want to transport your child in a travel buggy. The age specification "up to three years" can also be replaced by "up to 15 kg". Here, too, it is clear that not every child weighs 15 kg at the age of three.

However, the manufacturers take precautions here. If your child is heavier and an accident or injury occurs, there is no warranty from the manufacturer.

Can the seat unit of a travel buggy be rotated?

One of the great advantages of a classic pushchair is that you can decide for yourself whether your child should look towards you or forwards. The seat units here can be rotated and can be mounted in the desired direction in just a few simple steps.

The travel buggy is designed to fold up as small as possible. However, this also means that it does not have much room for manoeuvre in terms of equipment. Removable seat units are therefore rarely provided.

For this reason, there are very few models that allow the child to face you. Especially with very small children, it is often recommended that they should not look forward, but towards the parents.

You know your child best and can judge whether he or she can be exposed to the stimuli facing forwards. If this is not the case, you can explicitly look for a travel buggy where the child can see in both directions.
