According to the monograph of the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the recommended daily dose is up to 3 g of turmeric powder from the dried turmeric. The duration of use is not limited. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends a dose of 1 to 3 g of the dried root per day- For the fresh, chopped root, the reference value is 1.5 to 3 g per day and for curcumin 1.2 to 1.8 g per day. You should also spread the intake of turmeric over the day. The best way to do this is to take 1/3 of the daily dose three times a day.

Suitability during pregnancy

Turmeric in high doses during pregnancy can lead to cramps and bleeding from the uterus.

Even during breastfeeding, the intake of turmeric should not be exaggerated. However, if you are unsure and do not want to do without the spice, it is best to ask your gynaecologist.

Suitability against cancer

Turmeric is considered healthy and is often consumed as a dietary supplement. It also shows an effect against cancer. Turmeric acts on the cancer stem cells. It prevents the cancer cells from surviving because it has a very strong anti-inflammatory effect. Thus, with the help of turmeric, the body reacts against the formation of new cancer cells, because certain transcription factors lead to the enlargement of the tumour. As soon as these no longer exist, further growth is stopped for the time being. Turmeric is able to shut down the transcription factors, which means that the tumour cells no longer duplicate themselves by dividing. In addition, turmeric strengthens the membranes of healthy cells. Strong cell membranes are considered less susceptible to pathogens.


In some cases, turmeric can trigger allergic reactions. In addition, patients with gallstones should refrain from taking turmeric. Continuous intake and overdose of turmeric can also lead to gastritis or irritate the stomach lining.

Therefore, the daily intake of turmeric should never exceed 12 grams.


Turmeric is poorly soluble in water and not very stable. Our body finds it difficult to absorb the non-water-soluble turmeric, as it consists largely of water. Therefore, a large part is excreted directly through the intestines and the liver. Humans can therefore only benefit from turmeric to a small extent. One would have to consume 8-15g of pure turmeric powder daily to get a very small amount of turmeric into the body. But this is a very high and hardly edible amount.
