Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an ultralight sleeping bag

Who is an ultralight sleeping bag suitable for?

Hiking further, being flexible and not slipping so easily on mountain passes! It's all possible with an ultralight sleeping bag. The ultralight sleeping bag is made of down - down has high-quality insulation material, a minimal pack size, an excellent sleeping feeling and is more durable than synthetic fibre.

This makes the ultralight sleeping bag ideal for anyone who likes to be out in the fresh air, who covers short and long distances - no matter which peak you want to climb.

What are the advantages of an ultra-light sleeping bag?

On longer mountain tours or hiking trips, you have to make sure that the pack size isn't too heavy - otherwise you'll already be on your way home after half the distance because of back pain. But the ultralight sleeping bag should be even more impressive.

The advantages of an ultra-light sleeping bag stand out from many other models. Its breathability, water-repellent material and light pack size not only make it a companion on the trail, but also give you a peaceful night's sleep. In itself, cleaning an ultra-light sleeping bag is not too difficult.

There is only one thing you should keep in mind - Do not wash with mild detergent or functional detergent - Do not iron - Do not expose to sunlight. Unfortunately, every good product has a few disadvantages.

The zip of the ultra-light sleeping bag is much too heavy. This has the disadvantage that the seams of the zip tear more quickly. The material of the ultra-light sleeping bag is much thinner than that of many other sleeping bags, so the material tears more quickly and the seams come apart.

Here, too, the cost plays a big role. The material is of higher quality and also has many functions. You should inform yourself well before you decide to buy an ultralight sleeping bag.

Is a 3 or 4 season ultralight sleeping bag suitable for me?

The 3-season ultralight sleeping bag is ideal for autumn, spring and winter. It reaches a comfort temperature of -5 to +10°C and is suitable for people from 1.51 m to over 2 m tall.

Zip heat loss is prevented by a cold protection envelope, 3D thermal performance or double reinforced zip cover. There are various models of 3-season ultralight sleeping bag, but almost all are robust, moisture-resistant, skin-friendly, water-repellent, breathable and windproof.

In colder temperatures, a good sleeping mat is important in addition to the sleeping bag, so that the warmth is not displaced by the cold ground.

What does an ultralight sleeping bag cost?

From cheap to expensive, it's all there. Down ultralight sleeping bags are usually a bit more expensive. But as you will see in our table, there are also somewhat cheaper ultralight sleeping bags.

What are the alternatives to an ultralight sleeping bag?

There are various models and versions of ultralight sleeping bags - but how can you get an overview of all the confusion? That's why we've compiled a brief overview of the alternatives to ultralight sleeping bags:

Model Description
Down Ultralight Sleeping Bag A good down ultralight sleeping bag will last ten to fifteen years or even longer. It has to be said that the ultra-light fabric has been carefully thought out down to the last detail - the manufacturer recommends: "The tight cut reduces the weight and there are hardly any cold spots inside".
Synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag The synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag is more suitable for mountain tours, climbing tours and hiking tours. You should make sure that the material is moisture repellent and breathable.
Pertex sleeping bag This is a high-quality material where two different yarns are combined with each other to create a water-repellent and breathable effect.
Mummy sleeping bag Here, the material is not the decisive point, but the fit. The mummy sleeping bag adapts perfectly to the shape of the body. Since the mummy sleeping bag is available in different sizes, the manufacturer recommends trying it out before buying - because a comfortable fit lets you sleep wonderfully, no matter at what altitude or in what region you are travelling.

Decision: What types of ultralight sleeping bags are there and which one is right for you?

In this section we explain the different types of ultralight sleeping bags and the advantages and disadvantages of each type. When it comes to ultralight sleeping bags, a distinction is generally made between these two materials:

  • Down ultralight sleeping bag
  • Synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag

What distinguishes a down ultralight sleeping bag and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

The material down has unique properties - resulting in a very good ratio between weight, insulation performance and pack size. Down is filled with soft down and a small amount of feather.

The down part provides the warmth and the feather part supports the down. The only enemy that the down ultralight sleeping bag has - is wetness. Wetness causes the fine down to clump together.

  • Breathable
  • Pleasant feeling on the body
  • Good price
  • Wet conditions
  • Massive loss of insulation

What distinguishes a synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

The conditions are almost identical to down - only the material "synthetic fibre" is more robust. Synthetic fibres hardly absorb any moisture - and if they do, they keep you warm even when damp. Care is very easy.

Synthetic fibres have a higher thermal performance - no matter if the outer material is wet, it keeps you warm or you are in tropical areas, it also cools you down. But one thing that is a real shame is that the comfort of the synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Dries faster
  • Easy to clean
  • Higher warmth
  • A little more expensive
  • Not quite as breathable
  • Comfort feeling

Buying criteria: You can compare and rate ultralight sleeping bags based on these factors

It all comes down to the factors - which you should consider and gather information on before you buy.

  • Size/weight
  • Ultralight
  • Hygienic
  • Breathable
  • Practical

We can only recommend that you try out the ultralight sleeping bag before you buy it. There are different sizes for different types and you should be 100% sure that you have enough space.

The ultralight sleeping bag can fit into any pocket, no matter how small. For every city trip, beach and mountain tour - have your ultralight sleeping bag ready. The ultralight sleeping bag weighs only 155 g and has a small pack size.

The ultralight sleeping bag, always depends on the material - but view it is very easy care and washable at 30 ° C in the washing machine. In addition, the ultra-light sleeping bag dries extremely quickly, allowing it to be washed within a few hours.

Again, it depends on the material of the ultralight sleeping bag. Due to the extremely thin and light material - you will not be hot in tropical areas in the ultralight sleeping bag - as this is stopped by the thin material. This and the comfortable fabric lead to unforgettable nights.

Possible uses

Practical, round or flat simply super. Most ultralight sleeping bags also have an integrated pillow, which ensures that it always stays in place and contact with a foreign pillow can thus be avoided.

It can also be used as a simple blanket or pad. If you like to get cold at night, you can also use the ultralight sleeping bag as a ticking for larger or thicker sleeping bags.

Things to know about ultra-light sleeping bags

What is the best way to clean my ultralight sleeping bag?

In the beginning, you should make sure that you clean your ultralight sleeping bag properly once before using it for the first time and then only when it needs it. We explain the correct care for two materials:

Synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag care instructions

Hand wash
  • First read the care label - close all Velcro, zips and press studs and turn inside out.
  • Make sure you use a mild or functional detergent. Never use both together.
  • Mix enough warm water (approx. 30 degrees) with detergent.
  • Then massage your ultralight sleeping bag and let the detergent soak in for a while.

Do not knead or wring the ultralight sleeping bag too much when hand washing, otherwise fine seams can tear!

  • Do not use fabric softener or bleach
  • Finally, rinse the ultralight sleeping bag well and thoroughly.
Machine wash
  • Again, the first step is to read the care label and close all Velcro and zips, then turn everything inside out.
  • Set at 30°C and gentle cycle, use mild or functional detergent - no fabric softener and no bleach.
  • Now put the ultralight sleeping bag in the washing machine and run it through several rinse cycles.
  • Finally, give it a quick spin and hang it up.

Down Ultralight Sleeping Bag Care Instructions

Hand wash
  • As with the synthetic fibre ultralight sleeping bag, you should first read the care label, Velcro, zip and turn inside out.
  • You feel the bathtub with sufficient warm water approx. 30°C.
  • Please use a down detergent "20 to 30 millilitres" should be sufficient.
  • Immerse the ultralight sleeping bag in water and let it soak into the fabric and filling.

Do not waltz, stomp or wring - you must be very careful - otherwise in the worst case all seams will travel.

  • Once you have massaged your ultralight sleeping bag, leave it to soak for half an hour, then gently move it around a little.
  • Now drain the water from the tub and rinse your ultralight sleeping bag well with cold water.

Drying an ultralight sleeping bag properly

  • Take your ultralight sleeping bag and lay it crosswise on the clothes horse and then place it over the bathtub.

Dry lying down - do not hang on one side, otherwise the filling will be unevenly distributed.

  • If you want to dry your ultralight sleeping bag outside, do it in such a way that it is not exposed to the sun's rays.
  • Every few hours you should shake and turn your ultralight sleeping bag until it is dry. It will take about two to three days for it to dry properly.
  • You can dry it gently at low temperatures and - if possible - on the gentle programme in the tumble dryer.
  • Do not iron!

What does ticking mean?

The ticking is made of silk and blended fabric - ideal for larger ultralight sleeping bags. It is usually packed inside the sleeping bag and you don't just lie in the loose ultralight sleeping bag.

It warms you again from the inside, remains breathable and absorbs liquid more quickly. The ticking has one disadvantage - it takes much longer for the ticking to dry again.

In itself, cleaning is very easy, either by hand or in the washing machine at 30°C - often you only need to clean the ticking - and not the whole ultralight sleeping bag. It doesn't add any weight to your luggage either; with a weight of 320 g, it's comfortable and within the appropriate range.
