The most important facts
- Upholstered beds are in vogue and can compete with box spring beds in terms of their features, whereby the favourable prices often speak in favour of the upholstered bed.
- A great advantage of upholstered beds is the all-round upholstery, which offers a lot of comfort. Upholstered beds have no hard spots and the headboard is also upholstered.
- Basically, you can choose between two materials: Genuine leather and imitation leather, whereby genuine leather is more expensive but of higher quality.
- Upholstered beds are also optionally offered with a bed base. This feature is particularly practical and provides additional storage space.
The Best Upholstered Bed: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an upholstered bed
What is an upholstered bed?
Upholstered beds offer a wide variety of materials and can be selected with covers made of different types of fabric or imitation leather. This allows the beds to be adapted to the respective furnishing style, similar to a couch in the living room.
As an alternative to the conventional and often somewhat bulky-looking bed, upholstered beds are finding more and more favour, especially among a younger clientele, and serve as an alternative to the expensive box spring bed. If upholstered beds are equipped with a bed base, there is enough storage space to store bedding and make the upholstered bed look like a cosy couch during the day.
Who is an upholstered bed suitable for?
For people who are somewhat older or physically impaired, it is important to choose a bed with a comfortable height. This makes it much easier to lie down on it and get up again. For teenagers and young adults, beds with a particularly modern design and a low height similar to a futon bed are recommended.
Why should I buy an upholstered bed?
Upholstered beds are popular and practical furnishing items, especially in one-room flats or youth rooms. With their soft shapes and comfortable upholstery, they replace the couch by day and become a comfortable place to sleep by night.
What sizes of upholstered beds are there?
|bed size in cm||use|
|120 x 200 cm||single bed|
|140 x 200 cm||single bed|
|160 x 200 cm||singles with connection|
|180 x 200 cm||singles and couples|
|200 x 200 cm||couples|
Special sizes are usually available. This applies, for example, to overlengths of 210 or 220 cm. If you want such a bed, you should ask the manufacturer directly.
When planning the location, please note that the dimensions always refer to the pure lying surface.
The upholstery of the bed is not included. Therefore, you should always leave some leeway when measuring the location. If the side parts of the bed are thickly upholstered, the total area can increase by up to ten centimetres.
How much does an upholstered bed cost?
The price of furniture varies depending on the dimensions and material. Double beds are more expensive than single beds and beds made of real leather are more expensive models made of imitation leather.
If you plan to use the bed for years to come, a high-quality model is recommended.
What accessories are needed for an upholstered bed?
Indirect light sources are often integrated into the headboards. This often saves on the classic bedside lamp. The extent to which additional bedside tables and shelves are needed depends on your personal taste and the space available. What is the difference between an upholstered bed and a box spring bed?
When it comes to lying comfort, however, there is often a trade-off compared to the more expensive and bulky box spring bed. Boxspring beds are higher, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed. One disadvantage: the heavy and high beds can almost completely take over smaller rooms and therefore look rather unattractive there.
What alternatives are there to an upholstered bed?
Box spring bed
The box spring bed is also called an American bed. The usual slatted frame is not present here. Instead, this model uses a sprung base. Boxspring beds are particularly popular in North America, although they are also becoming more and more popular in the UK.
A futon bed has a harder mattress than an upholstered bed and a very low frame height of maximum 30 cm. This model originated in Japan, where sleeping close to the floor is considered healthy.
In waterbeds, the mattress is filled with water. A distinction is made between softside and hardside. In the softside version, a so-called water core lies in the heat-insulating foam tub. In a hardsoft waterbed, the water core is held all around by a frame.
Decision: What types of upholstered beds are there and which one is right for you?
If you have decided to buy an upholstered bed, there are two different types to choose from:
- Upholstered bed with bed base
- Upholstered bed without bed base
After that, all you have to do is choose the material and the colour. A model with or without a bed base has its advantages and disadvantages. It depends on what you prefer and whether the storage space in the bed base is needed at all. Below you will find the advantages and disadvantages of the two versions to help you make your decision.
What is an upholstered bed without a bed base and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Upholstered beds without a bed base look lighter and are also suitable for small rooms as they are less constricting. If you do not need additional storage space and want to transport an elegant lightness into the room, these upholstered beds are a good choice.
There is also an advantage for the mattress. It can ventilate much better than in a closed bed frame. If you sweat a lot at night, you will have to air out the mattress less often.
What is an upholstered bed with a bed base and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Upholstered beds with a bed base are visually similar to box spring beds. If storage space in the bedroom is limited, the bed base is a welcome alternative to chests of drawers or linen chests.
If the bedding is stored in the bed base, the upholstered bed can quickly be transformed into a cosy oasis of well-being that is also a pleasure to use during the day. Bed drawers are available in different layouts and offer compartments and drawers for blankets, bed linen and bedding.
Further distinctions can be made in the material. You can choose from upholstered beds made of fabric, imitation leather or leather. Individual taste is what counts here. If you use existing colours or materials in the room as a guide, you can create a homely and coordinated ambience.
Here you will find a comparison of the general advantages and disadvantages of upholstered beds.
Upholstered beds also differ in the shape and size of the headboard:
- Straight and puristic lines
- Playful shapes with rounded edges
- Wide and large headboards with thick upholstery
- Flat headboards in the shape of a pillow
The cover can be completely smoothly stretched, but also raised and interrupted by recessed buttons and ornaments.
Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate upholstered beds
In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate upholstered beds. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular upholstered bed is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:
- Bed legs
Before buying, the dimensions of the desired upholstered bed should be determined. The assembly dimensions must match the space available. Also consider sufficient freedom of movement and the additional requirements already mentioned due to the upholstered cover not being taken into account in the dimensions.
If you want an upholstered bed that is similar in size to a marriage bed, you should prefer models with a width of at least 180 cm. The mattress should be at least 15 to 20 cm longer than you, with the most common mattresses being 200 cm long. For people taller than 190 cm, beds are available in extra lengths.
The height of the bed frame should also be considered. Do you want a relatively high frame or is a low one sufficient? A comfort height of 40 cm or more is recommended for comfortable entry and exit.
Choosing the right material will certainly take some time. The easiest way to decide is to match the upholstered bed to the style of furnishings in the room. When it comes to bed materials, you can choose between genuine leather, imitation leather and fabric.
Genuine leather just has a rough leather back, which is a typical feature of it. It is also much more supple than imitation leather. One aspect that also differentiates the two items is the price. Upholstered beds made of genuine leather are definitely more expensive than imitation leather beds, which are sometimes available at very low prices.
Simple elegance is emphasised with upholstered beds made of imitation leather. Covers in genuine leather are also available.
If you like it light and airy and playful, you will prefer a light and flowery fabric. For a more sober and restrained interior, upholstered beds with discreet, single-coloured covers are suitable. In any case, care should be taken to ensure that the material and workmanship are sturdy. It is an advantage if the covers can be easily cleaned and perhaps even removed.
An upholstered bed with a headboard offers you additional comfort. A high headboard is suitable for leaning back comfortably. The headboard is upholstered in the same style as the side panels and completes the overall picture.
If the bed is not only to be used as a place to sleep, but also as a comfortable place to sit during the day, or if you want to read or watch TV in bed, upholstered beds with a headboard are clearly the better choice. Headboards are often elaborately and attractively designed, and it is not uncommon to find integrated LED lighting.
This dimmable and often differently coloured light source creates an atmospheric ambience. Incidentally, upholstered beds do not have a border at the foot edge. If the bed is not limited by a footboard, the construction becomes more open and wide and can also be used in more confined spaces. If you wish, you can also get in at the front and will not be hindered if you stretch out on the bed or have grown a little taller.
There are also differences in the bed legs. The shape and material are adapted to the rest of the bed design. For upholstered beds with a bed base, the legs do not play a primary role. For upholstered beds without a bed base, on the other hand, the bed legs are more important.
The legs can be made of metal, plastic or wood. This allows the upholstered bed to be well integrated into the rest of the furnishings. Wooden bed legs will go better with a wooden farmhouse wardrobe than the rather cool-looking metal.
You can opt for angular, sled, square or cylindrical bed legs, relying solely on aesthetic factors and trusting your own taste. The shape of the bed legs does not affect the value of the upholstered bed in any way.
A slatted frame is often included in the delivery of the upholstered bed. However, if it is an upholstered bed with a bed base, a simple slatted frame is rather unsuitable. The slatted frame and mattress must be removed so that the contents of the bed base can be accessed.
This can be simplified by using a slatted frame with adjustable head and foot sections. This also increases your sleeping comfort. Other extras include LED lights in the headboard. Some models also have an integrated radio. Matching bedspreads and pillows are offered less frequently.
Facts worth knowing about upholstered beds
You made your bed, now sleep in it. A few considerations are necessary to ensure that your new upholstered bed is just right for you. Perhaps you have already decided on a model, but perhaps you still have some doubts and are undecided about which upholstered bed actually suits you. Then you should read on.
What type of upholstered bed am I?
There is a large selection of upholstered beds. We have already mentioned that it is advisable to match the upholstered bed to the existing furnishings. However, if you want to completely redesign your bedroom and the upholstered bed is to be the starting point, you are completely free in your choice and should perhaps generally ask yourself what style of furnishing you prefer.
|Modern and sober||If you prefer clean lines and don't tolerate any frills in your home, upholstered beds in neutral fabric colours are the right choice., Grey is the fashionable colour par excellence for this rather purist furnishing style., Upholstered beds with metal feet harmonise very well with modern and straight-lined furnishings.|
|Bright and friendly||A country style interior appears bright and inviting., An upholstered bed made of wood with a light quilting of fabrics in warm colours does justice to this.|
|Stylish and romantic||High-quality and slightly playful furnishings tolerate upholstered beds in elaborate quilting and with eye-catching floral elements., A curved finish to the headboard creates a transition to the playful shapes of the furniture.|
Once the upholstered bed has been purchased, the rest of the furnishings can be built around it. Room colours and decorations can be used to create flowing transitions. A small break in style is also possible and a leather upholstered bed can be combined with playful accessories. Whatever you like is allowed.
How do I care for my upholstered bed?
Cleaning upholstered beds is different from keeping a conventional wooden or metal bed clean. Smooth surfaces can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Textile upholstery makes cleaning more difficult. Dust and loose hairs can be removed with a hoover. Stains can be removed with a mild cleaning agent applied to a damp cloth.
For more aggressive stains that have penetrated the upholstery, often the only solution is to buy a new upholstered bed. Suitable covers and bedspreads can protect upholstered beds from dust, dirt and sunlight. Special covers that can be cleaned in the washing machine are practical. Imitation leather usually does not tolerate water.
Cleaning should be done with a dry cloth. Dust can also be vacuumed off. When doing so, watch out for sharp edges, because imitation leather tears quickly or is damaged in other ways. If you have a leather upholstered bed, you can use a damp cloth and should avoid using any cleaning agents. Dust is well absorbed with a microfibre cloth.
Leather is the most high-maintenance material of all and needs to be treated with a special leather care product every now and then. Rough leather is cleaned with a very soft and gentle upholstery brush. We have summarised again in an overview what to look for when cleaning upholstered beds with regard to the material.
|Fabric||vacuum, remove stains with a damp cloth and mild detergent, easy to clean but susceptible to wear|
|Imitation leather||does not tolerate water, foaming possible on contact with moisture, clean with a dry cloth, vacuum carefully, scuffs and cracks possible|
|Leather||clean with a damp cloth, do not use detergent, remove dust with microfibre cloth, use leather care|
The cleaning agents should always be selected according to the material of the upholstered bed. The bed legs can be cleaned with a damp cloth. In the case of upholstered beds without a bed base, the hoover should also be used more frequently under the bed, as dust tends to settle here particularly readily.
What do I have to bear in mind when setting up my upholstered bed?
It is very important to know that you can assemble a bed without the help of another person. You don't need any prior knowledge of craftsmanship, just the (hopefully good) assembly instructions from the manufacturer. However, assembly with a helper is perhaps more pleasant, as it is quicker and usually more fun.
It is recommended to take as much time as possible for the assembly. The final position of the bed should be fixed and the required materials already placed there. Sensible tools, especially a cordless screwdriver, are very important. It is best to work with a lot of patience, because not everything always works out the first time.
