Whether it's for stress relief, employment, distraction or calming down, there are many reasons why you might fail in your attempt to quit smoking. If you too are struggling but don't want to give up, a vaporizer could be the right solution for you!

In our vaporizer test 2022 we present you with detailed background information about vaporizers. You will find answers to frequently asked questions and we will introduce you to some types of vaporizers. We also provide you with criteria that you should pay attention to when buying a vaporizer.

  • A vaporizer is a device that enables the user to effectively vaporise active substances. These are usually plant substances such as tobacco, cannabis or other herbs.
  • In contrast to a cigarette or a cigar, the respective active ingredient is not burnt, so that no additional by-products are produced. For this reason, vaporizers are also used as an alternative to conventional cigarette consumption.
  • In addition, vaporizers are characterised in particular by direct vaporisation of the ingredients. Alternatives such as the inhaler always require a solution of the respective active ingredient. For this reason, the effects of the respective herbal substance are much more intensive.

The Best Vaporizers: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a vaporizer

What is a vaporizer?

As already mentioned, it is a device that allows direct vaporisation of plant substances such as tobacco or other herbs. This distinguishes them from pretty much all alternatives that can only be used with a solution of the respective active ingredient. The device is also known as a vaporiser.

They also have the unique property of being able to inhale the ingredients without the help of combustion, so harmful by-products are not an issue. The substance is only heated up to a certain level. The temperature can also be adjusted on the vaporiser.

The advantage is that each substance has a specific boiling temperature that can be easily adjusted due to the freely selectable heating. Each of these plant substances has specific oils that are released when the boiling temperature is reached. These can then be inhaled through the device.

As already mentioned, the required temperature itself varies from substance to substance and ranges from 130 - 190 degrees Celsius.

What does a vaporizer do?

Many of the conventionally used substances in a vaporiser contain a variety of positive properties that have a corresponding effect on the body and possibly on the psyche. Camomile, eucalyptus, sage or thyme are just a few examples of plants with healing effects that can be vaporised.

A prime example of this is cannabis. For a long time, this medicinal plant was considered a drug and accordingly enjoyed a negative reputation. However, some cannabis substances also have a healing effect, which is steadily gaining in importance in medical circles.

It is only in recent years that the bad reputation of cannabis has slowly subsided and it is now appreciated by many patients for its pain-relieving effects. (image source: / Michael Fischer)

In contrast to smoking, vapourising is much gentler, as several toxic by-products are produced in case of combustion, such as tar or nitrogen oxide. Accordingly, the negative effects of smoking can be explained. In addition, the vast majority of ingredients are preserved during vaporisation, which is beneficial both to the aroma and to the healing effect, as in the case of camomile.

Where are vaporizers used?

The use of vaporisers is wide-ranging. For example, it is used as a medicinal treatment in conventional households. Small devices that are also very user-friendly are particularly popular among the masses.

Due to the extremely wide range of products, there is a substance that can be inhaled for almost every minor illness. Among other things, colds and restlessness can be treated.

In addition, many people use a vaporizer as a substitute for cigarettes, on the one hand to benefit from the relaxing effect and on the other hand to put an end to cigarette consumption, which is known to be extremely harmful.

However, a certain caution applies here, as not every substance promises a positive effect.

In some circles, vaporisers are misused for the wrong purposes, for example to consume natural or synthetic drugs. A prime example is the illegal use of cannabis, where relatively high amounts of THC are vaporised. This substance is particularly known for its psychoactive effect. Therefore, this consumption is classified as punishable by official circles.

Decision: What types of vaporizers are there and which one is right for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between five different types / kinds of vaporizers:

  • Conduction
  • Convection
  • Desktop, or table
  • mobile vape
  • Vape pen

What are conduction vaporizers and what are the advantages and disadvantages of conduction vaporizers?

Conduction vaporizers heat the substance(s) through direct contact with the so-called oven. This is a surface that is comparable to a cooker, as it is heated and thus releases the effect ingredients with the help of the heating.

  • low cost due to simpler construction
  • large vapour production from the first puff
  • heating is rapid
  • due to constant heating, the effect is not optimal
  • inhalation takes a relatively long time (5 - 10 min.)
  • ingredients must be completely inhaled within one session

What are convection vaporizers and what are the advantages and disadvantages of convection vaporizers?

The convection vaporizer, on the other hand, heats only the air instead of a specific surface. Due to the increased temperature, the loose plant material is then dissolved and thus exposed to the air. The end product is inhaled.

  • promises best possible effect
  • ingredients can be used in several sessions
  • better aroma as well as quality
  • more expensive due to high complexity
  • heating takes more time
  • first puffs contain relatively little vapour

What are desktop vaporizers and what are the advantages and disadvantages of desktop vaporizers?

Desktop vaporizers are among the first vaporizers to be introduced to the market and are ideal for household use. Since they receive power directly from the wall socket, they are also the most effective of all variants. Therefore, they are especially used in medical circles.

  • allows for the best effect and the greatest vapour
  • in addition, the highest possible quality is guaranteed
  • associated with the relatively highest costs due to the construction
  • as a socket is required, unsuitable for on the move

What are mobile vapes and what are the advantages and disadvantages of mobile vapes?

Mobile vapes are mobile vaporizers that are designed for on-the-go use due to their design and size. In most cases, a battery serves as the power source. In terms of performance, they can almost compete with the desktop version.

  • enables almost as much effect as a desktop vaporiser
  • also suitable for on the go
  • expensive due to the construction
  • not suitable for the pocket

What are vape pens and what are the advantages and disadvantages of vape pens?

Vape pens are mobile vaporisers that are available in pen size. Due to their size, they are particularly suitable for on the go. The costs are in the lower segment and the devices can even be put in your pocket.

  • extremely flexible to use
  • inexpensive to acquire
  • not as effective as other variants

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate vaporisers

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate vaporizers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a certain vaporizer is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:

  • Intended use
  • Temperature
  • Material
  • Energy supply

One of the main criteria for the right vaporiser is the purpose it is to serve. As already mentioned, these vaporisers are used in a wide variety of areas. They are used in some hospitals and other medical facilities, but also in households, at the bus stop or simply on the street.

Consequently, vaporizers that make the best possible use of the respective ingredients are suitable for medical purposes. Therefore, convection vaporizers are particularly suitable. To get the maximum effect out of it, you should consider a tabletop vaporizer.

Due to their design and direct power access, they allow for maximum effect. However, this also applies if you are simply after the best possible aroma.

For on-the-go vaping, a tabletop vaporizer is completely out of the question. In this case, I recommend a mobile vape or a vape pen.

The Mobile Vape is more suitable for longer trips, while the Pen is best for your pocket. The pen is more inconspicuous, while the mobile vaporizer allows for a better quality aroma.

As already mentioned, the vaporiser must always reach a certain temperature so that the substances can be processed optimally. In principle, pretty much any substance imaginable can be inhaled via a vaporizer. This is why they are also used in aromatherapy.

The required temperature therefore always depends on the substance or the mixture. It is important that the device does not provide a temperature that is too high or too low. In this respect, the products differ on the one hand in the maximum achievable temperature and on the other hand in the time required for heating up.

Products with a fast warm-up time therefore allow you to better conform, as you can steam your substances as quickly as possible.

Depending on the device, the warm-up time can range from a few seconds to up to 30-45 minutes.

Plants such as lavender or sage need an optimal temperature of 100 - 150 degrees Celsius. Proportionally, these therefore belong to the low temperatures. Plants such as fennel or coffee beans are in the medium range of up to about 175 degrees Celsius. The highest temperatures are in the range of up to 200 degrees Celsius and concern plants such as aloe vera or valerian.

In any case, make sure that the temperature is not set too low so that the plant substances can develop their optimal effect. If the temperature is too high, on the other hand, you run the risk of unintentionally burning the material. In this case, toxic by-products may be produced.

With regard to the material, the market offers you a variety of options. Many products consist of a metal housing. Depending on taste, a housing made of wood, for example, can also be used to achieve a look that is inspired by nature. An LED or OLED display is also extremely practical.

This means you always have the temperature in view. Alternatively, the respective product offers you a selection of preset temperatures. Another criterion is the material of the heating element. At high temperatures, it is therefore particularly important that the substance does not burn unintentionally.

Therefore, you should always prefer a heating element made of ceramic to one made of metal. Bear in mind that you are also doing something good for your health.

Energy supply

One of the characteristics of tabletop vaporizers is that they are connected directly to a power socket via a cable. However, the larger the capacity of the batteries or rechargeable battery, the longer the device can be used.

Devices with rechargeable batteries have the advantage that the battery can be recharged, which is usually not the case with batteries. This means that you do not have to constantly buy new batteries for use.

However, the other variant also has a disadvantage; depending on the quality of the built-in rechargeable battery, it will have to be replaced at some point, so you should always have a replacement ready.

Facts worth knowing about vaporizers

The history of the vaporizer

The vaporiser is known for vaporising substances such as herbal substances, which is also called vaporising (hence the name). It is known that this process has been used for hundreds of years by people from different parts of the world.

Ancient cultures are said to have vaporised various seeds and herbs with the help of glowing stones in order to release the corresponding aroma. However, experts still disagree on when and where exactly the process began. Some believe, for example, that there are traces that lead back to ancient Egypt.

Another approach says that the so-called Huka, a water pipe is the first vaporiser, which was brought into being by the Moguls in what was then northern India and is now Afghanistan. Probably the greatest inspiration can be attributed to a Shake & Vape vaporizer built by Eagle Bill.

This was a glass pipe combined with a large filling chamber that was heated externally. Numerous industries took this as an approach and developed their own models and innovations as a result.

Important information about the vaporizer battery

Many models of the vaporizer have their own rechargeable battery that can be recharged when the capacity is exhausted. In addition to the capacity, which is given in mAh, there are a number of important points to consider so that the battery does not need to be replaced quickly.

When storing the battery, it is important that the room temperature is not too high. 20 - 25 degrees Celsius is a good guideline.

In addition, the battery should never be exposed to direct sunlight, as this can damage it. When charging, it is common for it to become particularly hot. Depending on the model, the temperature can vary. Therefore, I advise you to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

If the value is unusually high, it can affect the life span. Another point is the method of charging. Current models usually have a USB interface, which is particularly useful when travelling, for example in combination with a power bank. However, it is always advisable to use an external charger, as this charges the battery more evenly and thus has a positive effect on the service life. Last but not least, the service life should be mentioned. This depends on two factors: use and quality.

When it comes to use, the more properly the battery is handled, the longer it can be used. Nevertheless, even the best product does not last forever. Many devices only last a few months with regular use. Even top-quality models can last a few years at best.

Possible side effects of a vaporiser

So far, no side effects are known in medical circles that can be directly attributed to the vaporiser. On the contrary: when used correctly and with the right substances, a variety of positive effects on the body and psyche are known. However, incorrect use can also lead to serious damage.

One of the factors of harmful effects is too high a temperature. This can cause the substance(s) to burn in the heating chamber, resulting in toxic by-products. These are often accompanied by a nasty aroma and an unwanted smoke development. Another factor is the build-up of particles such as dust or suspended matter.

Most appliances therefore have appropriate filter systems installed. How effective these are varies from model to model. Therefore, a vaporiser with the most effective filters is recommended in all cases.

Furthermore, it is essential to clean the chambers at regular intervals.

Uncleaned devices are often accompanied by a horrible aroma. In addition, an extremely unpleasant scratching in the throat often occurs. Last but not least, the possible misuse of vaporizers should be mentioned. Again and again, there are people who use illegal substances such as THC or similar. The use of such devices is only safe to the extent that the substances used are safe.

Ingredients for the vaporizer with positive effects

In the following table you will find some ingredients that have a positive effect on the body and/or the psyche in different ways when vaporised.
