The Best Vertical Blind: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a louvre system
What is a vertical blind?
The slats can be gathered either in the middle, to one side only or to both sides. This allows you to flexibly regulate how much light falls into the room from the outside and how much you can see into the room from the outside. With many slat systems, the individual slats can also be turned so that you can regulate the incidence of light and the view even more finely.
How does a Vertiso work?
A Vertiso with light- and time-dependent control adjusts the distance and the inclination of the individual slats to the sunlight or executes automatic commands at a certain time of day. To ensure that the slats remain in the set position, they are either connected at the bottom by a chain or have weights welded into them.
What types of vertical blinds are there?
|Lamella curtains for windows||Are particularly suitable for large windows. The incidence of light and the view into the room can be changed individually and easily by pulling the slats further apart or turning them. The slats remain in place thanks to the weights attached to them|
|Slat curtains for doors or as room dividers||They are particularly suitable for patio/balcony doors. They can provide additional protection against dust, wind and insects. When hung in the door frame, they can serve as a privacy screen. They also have a privacy function as room dividers and still allow you to cross the room without any problems.|
What alternatives are there to vertical blinds?
|Pleated blind||Is a sun protection for the window that consists of folded fabric. It is attached to the top of the window and can be folded into a package when you want to let light into the room.|
|Blind||Is a privacy, sun and weather protection. Consists of several horizontally aligned slats that can be pulled together or apart as needed.|
|Curtain||Serves as privacy and light protection and in some cases has an insulating function. Consists of either one or two parts made of fabric that can be pushed in front of the window in any position.|
|Roller blind||Is a privacy and sun protection. It is a piece of fabric, usually rectangular, that is wound onto a roll located at the top of the window. To close the roller blind, the fabric is unwound from the fabric roll from top to bottom.|
Decision: What types of vertical systems are there and which is the right one for you?
When buying a Vertiso, you have the following alternatives:
- Vertical blinds for windows
- Vertiso for doors/as a room divider
Which slat system is right for you depends on what you want to use your new vertical blind for. Do you want to install a privacy screen on your window and regulate the incidence of light in the room, do you want to visually divide the room or are you perhaps looking for reliable protection against insects?
In order to find the right vertical blind for you, we will introduce you to the above-mentioned product types and explain their respective advantages and disadvantages.
What distinguishes a vertical blind for windows and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Unlike the curtain, the slat blind is not made of one or two but at least three parts. And unlike venetian blinds, these slats are not horizontal but vertical. The individual slats of the curtain are connected to each other at the bottom or weighted down with weights to ensure that they stay where they belong. You can also adjust how close and at what angle the individual slats are to each other. The special thing about vertical blinds for windows is that you can influence the incidence of light very precisely.
By pulling the slats together on one or both sides of the window, you can determine from which side of the window light enters the room. By changing the angle of the slats, you can regulate the amount of light that enters the room. Another advantage of the Vertiso for the window is that it also provides privacy from the outside, but does not completely darken the room.
The vertical blind for windows comes in many different colours and sizes, so it should be easy for you to find the right one. One disadvantage of the louvre system for windows is that the technology behind it is usually quite complex, so there is a higher potential for something to break. In addition, this type of louvre curtain is somewhat more expensive than the one for the door. Many vertical blinds you have to set up yourself at home, which can be complicated and tedious.
What distinguishes a Vertiso for doors/as a room divider and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The slat system for the door or as a room divider consists of several slats that hang from the ceiling and are not connected to each other at the bottom.
Because the slats are not connected to each other, you can easily pass through the slat curtain. This is particularly advantageous where work is being done and constantly opening and closing a door would be unnecessarily time-consuming.
For example, if different storage areas in a company are separated from each other by a vertical blind, but it is necessary to visit the different areas several times a day. If you use the louvre system for the door or as a room divider in private, this also has advantages. If you hang the Vertiso in front of your patio door, you can leave it open for ventilation in the summer and still be protected from insects entering your home.
The vertical blind for the door can offer you privacy, protection from sunlight and protection from wind. If you use the vertical blind as a room divider, you are a little more flexible than if you were to draw a direct turn into the room. You can change the position of the vertical blind as you wish, you do not darken the room too much, but you still have privacy.
One disadvantage of the louvre system for the door is its lack of stability. Even if weights are incorporated into the individual slats, they cannot withstand strong winds. In addition, you have to pay attention to the material used. Cheaper models made of polyester are often poorly made and warp after a while. In addition, you have a rather limited choice of colours for this type of vertical blind, so if you are looking for a room divider, the Vertiso is a rather plain alternative.
Purchase criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate vertical blinds
We will then show you which criteria you can use to decide between the many possible vertical blinds. There are the following aspects that you can use to compare vertical blinds with each other:
In the following paragraphs we will explain what is important in each aspect.
No matter what you want to use your new vertical blind for, it must fit into your home.
This means that the first thing you need to consider before buying a Vertiso is how big your window or door is, or the area you are looking for a room divider for. To do this, you should first measure the place where your new vertical blind is to be attached.
Depending on where the Vertiso will be mounted, measure in front of the window recess, in the window recess or from the wall. In addition, for slat systems that reach down to the floor, make sure that the slats end 1 cm-3 cm above the floor. You should also pay attention to the height of the slat rail when buying so that the slats do not end up resting on the floor.
This may sound complicated at first, but to your advantage you can order many vertical blinds made to measure and shorten them at home.
The shape of your vertical blinds should also depend on how your home looks. The standard shape for vertical blinds is rectangular. However, if you live in the attic, this is not a problem. Then the so-called slope vertical blind is the right choice for you. In this version, the slats form a triangle because they become shorter on one side.
This type of Vertiso can only be pushed together in the direction of the long slats. If your windows are rounded, this is not a problem, in which case you can bend the rail for the individual slats so that your new vertical blind also fits there. Some suppliers also offer special shapes, so you should be able to find what you are looking for.
The louvre system is not only intended to beautify your home, but in most cases it is primarily intended to fulfil a specific purpose. After all, a lamella curtain for the door should not only protect you from wind, but also from insects. A vertical blind as a room divider is ideally a privacy and sound barrier.
And a Vertiso for the window should simultaneously protect against too much light and serve as a privacy screen. Below you will find a list of some of the functions that a vertical blind can fulfil:
- Light protection
- UV protection
- Wind protection
- Sound insulation
- Privacy screen
- Partitioning of the room
- Protection against insects
Depending on where and for what purpose you want to use your new Vertiso, you should pay attention to the functions with which the slat curtain is advertised by the manufacturer. If you are looking for a vertical blind for business or agricultural use, its functionality comes first.
Place of use
Depending on whether you are looking for a vertical blind for the home, outdoor areas, industry or agriculture, it must fulfil different functions. In the following table, we have listed different places of use and summarised the properties that the Vertiso should fulfil there:
|Place of use||Important properties of the vertical blind|
|Home||Perfect fit in window or door, Easy to clean material, Attractive design|
|Outdoor areas (conservatory, stable, etc.)||Perfect fit, Easy to clean material, Attractive design Outdoor areas (conservatory, stable, etc.).),Accurate fit, Easy to clean material, Water-repellent material, Insulating function, Stability|
|Industry||Accurate fit, Easy to clean material, Sound insulation, Dust protection, Possibly protection against UV radiation, Insulating function, Stability|
|Agriculture||Accurate fit, Rounded edges, Soft material, Easy to clean material, Insulating function, Sound insulation|
Louvre systems can be mounted either on the wall or on the ceiling. Both types of installation are described as relatively simple. Where you mount your new Vertiso depends on various aspects. For example, if you have very high windows or doors, it makes more sense to mount the vertical blind on the ceiling.
For windows and doors that are a long way from the ceiling, it makes more sense to mount it on the wall, just above the window. If you want to use the vertical blind as a room divider, the only option is to mount it on the ceiling.
Once you have found the ideal place for mounting, you should use this as a starting point for measuring in order to determine the right size for your new vertical blind.
How your new Vertiso should look is of course a matter of taste, but depending on where it will be used, appearance or practicality may be more important. Vertical blinds for windows come in many different colours, so it should be easy to find a vertical blind that suits your taste.
Vertical blinds for the door, on the other hand, are more functional, as they are usually intended to protect against insects, they are often made of special materials that leave little room for manoeuvre in terms of design. If you are looking for a vertical blind for industry or agriculture, you will mainly find products made of transparent PVC. This material has particularly favourable properties, but leaves little or no scope for design.
Facts worth knowing about Vertiso
How do I mount my vertical blinds correctly?
As described above, you can either mount your new vertical blinds on the wall or on the ceiling. You will need the following materials for both types of installation:
- Hammer drill with concrete drill
- Or cordless screwdriver with metal or wood drill (for drywall construction)
- Attachments for 8mm drill holes
- Measuring tape
- Dowels suitable for the subfloor
- Suitable screws
- Mounting material supplied (mounting clips, rail, etc.)
If you have everything from the list ready, you can easily install your new vertical blind by following the steps below:
- Find the right place for the supplied mounting clips. Make sure that they are far enough away from the window. Rule of thumb: The object that protrudes furthest (e.g. window on tilt) + half the slat width + 1 cm safety cushion.
- Mark the spot for the drill hole with a pencil.
- Drill the hole.
- Insert the dowel.
- Fix the first clip with a wood screw. Make sure that the longer part of the clip faces the window.
- Measure the positions for the other clips, mark them with a pencil and attach the clips.
- Distribute all the clips along the marked line.
- Attach the rail to the mounting clips by pressing on them.
- Unroll the slats and press them into the rail one by one. Make sure that the seams of the slats all point in the same direction.
- Attach the chain to the bottom of the slats to weigh them down, following the instructions for each.
Where can I get spare parts if my Vertiso is broken?
Since the Vertiso is an object of daily use, it is easy for something to break. In this case, you can simply order the right spare parts from the dealer, ask for advice at the DIY store or order the right parts from the relevant online shops. Depending on what is broken, you have to consider different aspects:
If the lower connecting chain is defective, you have to replace it completely. Since the new chain must have the same properties as the old chain, it is best to buy it from the same manufacturer. If the weighting plates are broken or lost, it is best to order them again from the same manufacturer. These must also have exactly the same dimensions and the same weight as the old weight plate.
If individual slats are torn or dirty, this is not a problem as the manufacturer usually offers replacement slats, If the panel carrier is defective, i.e. the place where the individual slats are fixed, you will unfortunately have to seek professional advice. Or contact the manufacturer and try it yourself with a lot of expertise and skill.
How do you get your vertical blinds clean again?
A particular advantage of louvre systems is that the individual louvres are hardly susceptible to dirt or dust due to their vertical suspension. If cleaning is nevertheless necessary, there are various ways to get your Vertiso clean again: Some fabrics can easily be brushed dry. In most cases, this is also stated by the manufacturer.
In this case, you should use a soft brush or the brush attachment of the hoover on a low setting. However, you should avoid using cleaning agents and water. Some vertical blinds can also be wiped with a damp cloth. Here, too, pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions. You should use a damp cloth and always dilute the cleaning agents you use.
In addition, the slats must not be completely wet. Sometimes it is even possible to wash the slats in the washing machine or by hand. For this, you must remove the connecting chain and the weighting plates and should not exceed a temperature of 30°C. In the machine, the slats should be protected by a washing net and you should refrain from spinning. To dry, hang the slats back in the holder. You can simply clean the connecting chain or the weighting plates with a little diluted all-purpose cleaner.
Of course, you can also have your vertical blind cleaned at a dry cleaner.
