The size of the package has nothing to do with the contents. A large package does not mean that there are more tablets in it.

Active ingredient

Vitamin B12 is available as a preparation for B12 supplementation in various forms, both natural and synthetic. The substances found in vitamin B12 tablets are called cyanocobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, methylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin.

Dosage

Vegan

What are vitamin B12 tablets and how do they work?

Vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamins) belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins and contains several compounds, all of which have a ring system that contains cobalt. Cobalamins are chemical compounds found in all living things and are called vitamin B12.

It is significantly involved in various metabolic processes in the body, including the breakdown of fatty acids. Its central role in the metabolism of the vitamin folic acid also makes it important for blood formation. (1, 2)

Vitamin B12 is important for energy metabolism. It ensures cell renewal and blood cell formation in the bone marrow. A deficiency of blood cells leads to anaemia, which is manifested by fatigue.

These are the classic complaints or areas of application that are treated by taking vitamin B12 tablets, although there is not clear scientific evidence for everything:

What are the side effects of vitamin B12 tablets?

Side effects can occur due to an overdose or illness, this is called hypercobalaminemia. An overdose of vitamin B12 can cause symptoms of cobalamin deficiency.

Based on the data available in 2015, the EFSA did not recommend any known health risks when taking food supplements, which is why no maximum dose or maximum daily intake is given. (6)

Regular overdose of isolated vitamin B12 supplements may increase the risk of lung cancer, especially among male smokers. (7) When vitamin B12 is administered directly into the bloodstream, immunologically induced skin reactions such as eczema, acne or urticaria have been observed on the one hand.

However, these side effects do not pose any lasting danger due to their reversibility. On the other hand, serious reactions such as anaphylactic shock can occur, albeit only in rare cases. (8)

How much do vitamin B12 tablets cost?

Vitamin B12 tablets are available in different presentations, which is why the price also varies. Since the dosage and the number of tablets vary per manufacturer, we have calculated the prices proportionally for comparison purposes.

Effervescent tablets are the most expensive, because they usually come in oblong containers and are only available in small quantities. Effervescent tablets also have a lower dosage (approx. 150 micrograms) than the other dosage forms listed.

For the cheapest lozenges, the quantity per package is between 30 and 60 pieces, and for capsules or compressed tablets the average is even 100 pieces. Here, the dosages are between 500 and 1000 micrograms.

What types of vitamin B12 tablets are there?

Since vitamin B12 can be made from different active ingredients, there are also different ways to process them. But normal tablets are not the right form of administration for everyone. Basically, a distinction can be made between four types:

Pressed tablets They are in solid form and are taken orally. They are usually taken with a large glass of water.
Lozenges You put the tablet on or under your tongue and wait until it has dissolved.
Effervescent tablets The tablet is dissolved in a glass of water and then you drink the mixture.
Capsules They are filled with the active substance as a powder and are taken orally. They are usually taken with a large glass of water.

Pressed tablets

There are different sizes of pressed vitamin B12 tablets. Film-coated tablets or small round tablets are often used. They are packaged in plastic boxes and usually have a large number of pieces.

The compressed tablets are one of the most common types of vitamin B12 tablets. Depending on the manufacturer, the dosage and size varies. Artificial flavourings or other additives are usually not used.

Lozenges

You can also take vitamin B12 like a delicious sweet by getting lozenges. You can simply put them on or under your tongue and they will dissolve by themselves.

There are many different flavours, which makes it much easier and tastier to take. Especially people who have problems taking tablets can benefit from lozenges.

Effervescent tablets

Effervescent vitamin B12 tablets are often quite large and sold in oblong packaging. Taking them is very easy and all you need is a glass of water. The tablet is placed in the glass of water and it dissolves.

All you have to do is drink the mixture and you have taken your vitamin. Many of the effervescent tablets also have a fruity flavour like lemon or pomegranate. So it's like drinking a glass of lemonade.

Capsules

Vitamin B12 capsules are similar to the pressed tablets. The capsules contain a powder with the active ingredient. There are different dosages that you can choose from depending on your preference.

It is also recommended to take the capsules with plenty of liquid. The capsules are usually packaged in 100-piece containers and are intended to be taken daily.

How should vitamin B12 tablets be dosed?

The dosage varies depending on the manufacturer, but the tablets are usually dosed so that one tablet a day is sufficient.

However, there are differences depending on the age of the person. Infants have an estimated adequate intake of 0.5 to 1.4 micrograms per day. The older the child gets, the more he or she can consume daily.

From the age of 13, however, a value of 4 micrograms per day can be taken. Exceptions are made for pregnant women who need 4.5 micrograms daily and breastfeeding women who should even receive a value of 5.5. (11)

What alternatives are there to vitamin B12 tablets?

In addition to vitamin B12 tablets, there are other products that are possible alternatives to the tablets. These are:

Vitamin B12 drops Vitamin B12 drops are a highly concentrated liquid where 1-2 drops daily are usually sufficient. These drops are dissolved in water and can then be drunk.
Vitamin B12 Spray The vitamin B12 spray is also in liquid form and is dosed with one pump shot into the mouth per day. Usually the spray has a fruity taste.
Vitamin B12 vials The vitamin B12 vials are small drinking ampoules with liquid vitamin B12. One bottle a day is sufficient.

How can you recognise a vitamin B12 tablet deficiency?

Often the body can supply itself with vitamin B12 reserves for a long time if it has accumulated reserves over time.

A vitamin B12 deficiency only occurs when less of the vitamin is consumed over a long period of time and the reserves are exhausted. This is the case, for example, with a vegan or vegetarian diet, as the body absorbs the vitamin mainly from animal products.

Inflammations of the gastric mucosa or the intestines can also lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency, which leads to a disturbance in the absorption of the vitamin. In addition, taking certain medications for diabetes or heartburn and stomach ulcers can also trigger a deficiency. (9)

The first signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency include anaemia. This occurs more often in women than in men due to menstruation or pregnancy. Breastfeeding and elderly people who rarely consume animal products are also more likely to be affected.

To be sure, you can then take a blood or urine test to find out whether you really are deficient in vitamin B12. There is also a self-test for the blood test, a so-called Holo-TC test, in which you can take a sample at home and then send it to the laboratory.
