Drinking fluids, be it water or freshly squeezed orange juice, is one of the most important processes in our lives. Without water, there is no life. In order to always have these drinks with us separately, even when we are on the road, water bottles are ideal. So you don't have to run to the supermarket every time you get thirsty.

Yet the market offers so many types and varieties of water bottles that it's easy to lose track of them all. Don't worry, in this article we will explain everything about water bottles and give you an overview of which bottle is suitable for you.

  • Water bottles allow you to carry your water or any liquid with you at all times.
  • Water bottles are not just for humans. You can also get your pets, be they dogs or rabbits, a personalised water bottle.
  • When buying a bottle, you need to pay attention to the material it is made of, its stability and the type of closure. You should also keep an eye on the suitable model, depending on the age and whether the bottle is suitable for the dishwasher.

The Best Water Bottle: Our Choices

Buying and rating criteria for drinking bottles

As you can see, there are many different types of water bottles and the decision is really difficult. However, it must be clear to you that there are certain points that you should never ignore when buying a water bottle.

If the bottle meets these criteria, you can buy it with a clear conscience. These points are as follows:

In order to make these terms clearer to you and so that you can make sense of them, we will now explain them individually.

Material of manufacture

The material of the bottle is of particular importance. Not every material is good for your health. There are five different materials from which bottles are made.

The first variety is aluminium. This type of bottle is very light and therefore not heavy-duty. However, they can be scratched quickly. Since the inside of the bottle is coated, damage can cause aluminium to be released. This is not only harmful to health, but also changes the smell and taste of the drink.

Plastic drinking bottles are also not noticeable for their light weight in the bag. However, this material is not environmentally friendly or sustainable. These bottles are also not necessarily healthy, as their nature means that they are not BPA-free.

BPA, or bisphenol A, is a chemical reaction that occurs in so-called plasticisers, which are also used to make plastic. This plasticiser also causes the bottle to develop its own flavour over time, so that the drink tastes completely different.

Glass bottles are safe from such health hazards. They do not change taste and are very easy to clean. The only big problem is the danger of breakage and the injuries that can occur.

Stainless steel drinking bottles do not have this problem. They are not only light and unbreakable, but also more environmentally friendly. They also preserve the true taste and smell of the drink.

The last variant is made of Tritan. This is a BAP-free type of plastic and therefore harmless to health. Taste and odour neutrality are also safe here. However, this material is less environmentally friendly.

Closure safety

The worst nightmare is when you suddenly realise that your bag and all the contents inside are wet because the bottle has leaked. That's why it's always important to make sure that the quality is right. There are also bottles that leak because they cannot withstand the pressure of carbonated drinks. Therefore, before buying, always pay close attention to the description of the article.

Type of closure

In addition to the stability of the closure, the choice of closure type should also be considered. On the one hand, this is of course based on personal preference, but it also determines the handling.

The best known, especially for children's bottles, is the screw cap. Here, as the word suggests, the cap has to be turned to drink. When you have finished, you turn it the other way so that it doesn't leak. There is often an additional cap that reduces the risk of leakage.

With the push-pull closure, you pull on the drinking area, either by hand or mouth, to be able to drink. This type is particularly suitable for athletes to get their liquid quickly.

For people who want to quench their thirst during sports, there is also the bite cap, where you simply bite on the drinking spout.

The push cap can be opened by lightly pressing the button. When you close the bottle, you hear a click, which signals that the bottle is closed. Stainless steel bottles are more famous for their twist-off cap. It often has a strap, which makes it easier and more comfortable to carry.

Depending on age and activity, there is a suitable drinking bottle. For schoolchildren, for example, it is important that the bottle is light so as not to strain the young back and at the same time easy to handle.

For sports activities, it is advantageous if the bottle is unnoticeable and easy to stow or carry around. There are also different motifs and designs, depending on the age group and personal taste.

Dishwasher safe

To prevent the bottle from becoming smelly, losing its neutral taste or even becoming mouldy over time, it must always be cleaned. You have to make sure that the bottle is dishwasher-safe, because this is the best way to guarantee perfect cleanliness.

Many bottles are indeed dishwasher-safe, but it often happens that the rubber seal in the cap dissolves in the dishwasher and the bottle is no longer suitable.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about drinking bottles answered in detail

The most important elements have now become clear. Nevertheless, there are still a few open issues concerning the water bottle that we have not yet addressed. Therefore, here is a Q&A on the most important and frequently asked questions about the water bottle.

Who is a water bottle suitable for?

For everyone! Every one of us needs to drink, be it small or large. They are practical because we have our drinks in front of us at all times. On top of that, we act more environmentally conscious. Because by reducing the purchase of plastic drink bottles from the supermarket, we avoid plastic waste on the streets, as not every plastic bottle is recyclable.

What are the extras of water bottles ?

Besides the main function, which is to drink from the bottle, there are a lot of additional parts that you can integrate with the bottle, depending on your preferences. For example, there are belts that can be attached to the bottle so that you no longer have to carry it in your hand, but can simply hang it around your neck like a bag.

There are also water bottles that are labelled with times. These are supposed to be a kind of reminder to you, so that you always know when you need to drink how much fluid in order to meet your daily requirement for water intake.

Many people also like cucumber or lemon flavoured water. However, if you just put them in the water, it will squish and you won't be able to enjoy the drink. That's why there are integrated fruit holders where you can put in any kind of fruit you like.

But not everyone likes water. Some people find it difficult to drink the prescribed amount of water. That's why so-called "scent pods" were recently invented, which are attached to the drinking spout. These emit a certain smell that simulates to the brain that the water tastes like the smell. This makes drinking water much easier.

What does a water bottle cost?

Depending on the material, model and extra, the price of the water bottles varies. Here is a table with a rough overview of the price categories and the corresponding conditions:

Price category Available products
Low-priced 4 - 7 €) made of plastic,no good leakage protection, no extras
Medium-priced 7 - 20 €) BPA-free, nicer design,often with carrying hanger
High-priced 20 - 40 €) high-quality,stainless steel,flavour pods

How do you clean a water bottle?

Besides the dishwasher, there are several ways to clean your water bottle. For example, you can use a long brush and washing-up liquid to clean the inside of the bottle. Don't forget the trick cap either. Use a toothbrush or cotton pads to get to all the corners and avoid mould.

To kill bacteria, it is helpful to put the bottle in boiling water and leave it in for a maximum of three minutes. However, especially with plastic bottles, pay attention to how much heat they can withstand.

Another method with hot water is to add baking soda. This agent is known for its limescale-fighting properties. Just put two packets of baking soda and hot water in the bottle and leave it in overnight. You can also do the same with vinegar, because the effect is the same.

With all methods that use water, it is important that you leave the bottle to dry for a long time afterwards, otherwise there is a risk of bacteria or mould developing again.

Another way to get your water bottle clean is by using sea salt or rice. Here you take about four tablespoons of one of the two products, put it in the bottle and shake it. Since both sea salt and rice are hard, they rub off the deposits that stick to the bottle.

How long should you use a water bottle?

Despite regular cleaning, every water bottle has to come to an end. Of course, this depends on the way the bottle is cared for and on the material. The better both are, the longer the bottle can be used.

However, there are certain signals that indicate that a new product is needed. For one thing, if the bottle stinks no matter how often you clean it. Another is when the teat doesn't stick. Then you should buy a new one, because otherwise there is a risk of bacteria accumulating in that spot.

Water bottles are a must in order to be able to guarantee the body's supply of fluids. At the same time, reusing them protects the environment. Since the market offers a wide range of watter bottles, depending on age, model and various extras, it is important to focus on the most important criteria before buying.

These are, on the one hand, the manufacturing material and, on the other hand, the suitable model, depending on age and usage situation. But also the type of closure, its closure safety and whether this bottle can be cleaned in the dishwasher must be checked before making a purchase decision.

The prices of the water bottle vary according to the model and the added extras. However, the more expensive the bottle, the longer the usage time it guarantees.
