Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Brita water filter

Here you can find out what you should know before buying a Brita water filter. In this guide, we answer the most frequently asked questions about water filters.

What distinguishes a Brita water filter from other manufacturers?

Brita is a long-standing traditional brand from Germany. For over 50 years, Brita has been producing water filter products for the household.

If you buy a Brita water filter, you have the following advantages:

  • Specific industry knowledge: Many years of experience and specialisation in water filter products make Brita a reliable brand, which is why many customers trust it.
  • MAXTRA+ MicroFlow Technology: Brita has a patented water filter technology that uses activated carbon. As a result, Brita promises great-tasting and soft water in no time.

  • Spare parts service: With current water filter products, Brita offers a free service for water filter spare parts. Customer service is also available to answer any questions.
  • Cartridge delivery: Brita offers a one or two year cartridge service. During this time, the optimal amount of cartridges is conveniently delivered to your home. It is not a subscription, so no cancellation is necessary: the service is automatically terminated at the end of the 2 years.
  • Timeless, clear design: A visually appealing water filter that fits in almost any kitchen thanks to its harmonious design.
  • Unbeatable price: Brita offers water filters for little money. So everyone can have filtered, soft water for less than 20 euros.
  • High customer satisfaction: Not only the price is right, but also the price-performance ratio. Accordingly, customer satisfaction is above average.

What price range are Brita water filters in?

A Brita table water filter starts at €12.

In principle, a comprehensive set increases the purchase price. This is illustrated in the following table:

Scope of delivery price
Water filter in single pack from 12 €
Water filter in value pack S (3 cartridges) from 21 €
Water filter in value pack M (6 cartridges) from 40 €
Water filter in value pack L(12 cartridges) from 60 €

If you are looking for a water filter in an annual pack, you can expect a higher price. Nevertheless, you save money, because individual cartridges still have to be bought. Individual filter cartridges that are bought later generally cost more. It is therefore worth buying a value pack.

Which pollutants does the Brita water filter filter out of the tap water?

There are a variety of pollutants and foreign substances that are filtered out of the tap water, including:

  • Limescale
  • Sand
  • Chlorine
  • Taste-disturbing substances
  • Odour-impairing substances

Brita promises to filter the above substances out of your tap water, resulting in a neutral and soft taste.

Tips for hard water:

  • Let the water run for a while and only then tap it: It tastes better that way!
  • Descale kettles and coffee machines occasionally with diluted vinegar or citric acid instead of filtering water every day.
  • A squeeze of lemon helps against film on the tea.

If from a taste perspective you want to take the hardness further, Victoria Scherriff has the following tips to reduce the water hardness more. Go ahead and try it out!

What kind of spare parts and accessories does a Brita water filter have?

Brita water filters usually come with at least one filter cartridge. This is necessary for using the table water filter.

In addition, the following spare parts/accessories can be purchased:

  • Water hardness test kit
  • Cartridge change indicator
  • Cartridge set

What alternatives are there to Brita water filters?

Those who do not want a table water filter have the choice between:

  • Buy water bottles
  • Fitting a house water filter system

Here we have shown the advantages and disadvantages of both options compared to a table water filter.

Table water filter

Advantages
  • Low initial cost
  • Quick to use
  • Long-lasting kitchen appliances
Disadvantages
  • Follow-up costs due to purchase of filter cartridges
  • Monthly replacement of the filter
  • Germ formation possible

The price of a table water filter is low, which is why many people resort to this practical filtering method. You save yourself the trouble of lugging around bottles and do something good for the environment at the same time. A table water filter is easy to use and is therefore ready for immediate use. Due to the prevention of limescale, kitchen appliances such as coffee machines and kettles last much longer.

Changing the filter regularly is a drawback for many. With such frequency, it is not only a nuisance but also comes at a cost. With a table water filter, the water should not be left to stand for too long. Those who do not consume the water promptly and even let it stand overnight risk germ formation in the water filter cartridge.

Bottled water

Advantages
  • Practical for on the go
  • Variation in taste
  • Rich in minerals
Disadvantages
  • Not environmentally friendly with plastic bottles
  • high effort with glass bottles due to heavy lugging
  • follow-up costs for frequent drinkers

Water bottles are an alternative to a table water filter. The advantage is that you can take them everywhere. In addition, you have a wider choice of different tasting water: you can choose between still, gently sparkling, strongly sparkling and flavoured water. You also have the advantage that minerals are not filtered out by some water manufacturers.

Buying water bottles means planning well in advance: Is there a visit coming up soon? How many bottles will be needed until the next "shopping day"? If you consume a lot, you pay more. On the other hand, the cost is also higher if you take care of the environment and therefore do without plastic bottles.

Water filter system in the house

Advantages
  • Pipes and tubes are protected in the long term
  • Simple and convenient solution
  • Low expenditure
Disadvantages
  • Must be replaced annually by a plumber
  • High purchase and maintenance costs
  • Can lead to a mineral deficiency

A domestic water filter is the convenient solution for filtered water: filtered water at all times, without any effort. After installation, one has filtered water for at least a year without having to worry about changing the filter or buying water bottles. In the long run, such a filter can extend the longevity of your pipes and plumbing.

If you want to have a house water filter system installed, you have to expect high costs. However, the filter change cycle is not as short as with a table water filter. Changing the filter once a year is quite sufficient. Nevertheless, this cannot be done by oneself. A plumber must have the filter changed.

An installed water filter in the house not only filters pollutants and foreign substances, but also reduces the water hardness to the minimum. This means that drinking water that is free of heavy metals, germs and bacteria is also low in minerals.

As you can see, every water filter option has its raison d'être. Depending on what is your priority, one alternative will work well for you.

Did you know that hard water is not unhealthier? The harder the water, the more calcium and magnesium is dissolved in it.

Water with at least 150 mg of calcium per litre is called "calcium-rich". Calcium is helpful in preventing osteoporosis and can reduce symptoms of tooth, hair and nail damage.

In addition, magnesium-rich water (50mg/l or more) can support muscle and nerve metabolism and thus also prevent muscle cramps.

Keep in mind that a water filter can be advantageous for taste reasons, and that unfiltered tap water is harmless! If you also want to prolong the life of your kitchen appliances, use a water filter.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate Brita water filters

Now let's look at the criteria you should consider before buying. The listed factors help you to compare different Brita models with each other.

Filling volume

The filling volume of Brita water filters is available in 3 sizes. But which size contains how many litres? Brita divides water filters into the following types:

  • Water filter "Fun": It has a capacity of 1.5 litres. It is the smallest model and is particularly space-saving.
  • Cool" water filter: It has a capacity of 2.4 litres. This means it filters up to 1.4 litres of water. Its compact size of 26.5 x 27.5 x 11 cm (W x H x D) means it fits perfectly in the fridge.
  • Water filter "XL": It has a capacity of 3.6 litres. This means it filters up to 2.3 litres of water. It measures 26.5 x 27.5 x 15.5 cm (W x H x D) and is ideal for large households.

Handling

Handling depends on the particular model and concerns the filler opening and the handles.

A BRITA Swing lid enables better handling due to the tilting function.

The "Aluna" model can only be opened by removing the lid, while the "Marella" water filter has a convenient filling opening and can thus be operated with one hand.

Another option is offered by the "Style" water filter, which has a tilting opening. By tilting it slightly, it can be conveniently poured out.

In addition, the premium model "Elemaris" offers ergonomic handles for more comfort and improved operability.

Design

Brita water filters are available in classic colours such as "black" and "white". In addition, two model types have a wider choice of colours:

With the "Style" water filter, you can choose between the following colour combinations:

  • white-soft lime
  • white-soft grey
  • white-soft blue

In contrast, the "Marella" water filter is available in the following colours:

  • Blue (dark blue)
  • Basic blue (medium blue)
  • Basic berry
  • Basic purple
  • Graphite
  • White

Scope of delivery

The scope of delivery includes one water filter. In addition, the water filter is available as a three-month, six-month or even annual package, which means that the scope of delivery differs from the number of cartridges.

In the table below, you can see the four versions that Brita offers for table water filters:

Scope of delivery Meaning Model type
Water filter in single pack Only one Brita water filter is supplied Water filter "Aluna"
Water filter as 3-month pack One Brita water filter with 3 filter cartridges is supplied Water filter "Marella"
Water filter in a six-month pack One Brita water filter with 6 filter cartridges is supplied Water filter "Fun"
Water filter in a one-year pack One Brita water filter with 12 filter cartridges is supplied Water filter "Style"

If you want to save money, get a value package. Because filter cartridges are still needed. However, the individual price is more expensive than an annual package. It is therefore worth ordering a starter package.
