Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a water hoover

Before you buy a water hoover, you should equip yourself with some information. In the following section, we would like to provide you with everything you need to know about water hoovers.

What is a water hoover and how does it work?

A water hoover is a hoover with a water filter. This means that instead of an ordinary dust bag, it contains a dust container filled with water. In addition, most water hoovers can even suck up liquids.

A water hoover can be used in the same way as a conventional hoover. In the process, the dust and dirt gets into the water tank, enriches itself with small water particles and is thus directly bound. The water particles are released back into the room air, slightly moistening it. As soon as the suction process is complete, the water is simply tipped away.

The water hoover is particularly popular with allergy sufferers because it removes pollen, dust mites and other particles precisely.

What is a water vacuum cleaner suitable for?

A water vacuum cleaner is suitable for use in the home, but also in workshops. It removes dust and dirt just like a conventional hoover. Many water hoovers can also suck up liquids. The area of application is usually textiles, carpets and hard floors. But furniture and upholstery can also be cleaned with the water hoover.

A water hoover is particularly suitable for households with small children and for allergy sufferers. Mites and bacteria are destroyed by 99.5 %. Because the dust and dirt is directly bound in the water tank, no dust is released into the air, unlike with a conventional hoover.

What are the alternatives to a water hoover?

Finding a real alternative to a water hoover is not so easy. Depending on your requirements and what you want to use your hoover for, the following options are available.

  • Floor hoovers: If you are only interested in removing dust and dirt, a conventional floor hoover might be suitable for you. They are available with different filter systems. Either you choose one with a classic dust bag or one with a dust container. Classic hoovers come in different sizes and models. However, they are not suitable for allergy sufferers because they raise a lot of dust.
  • Steam cleaner: A steam cleaner does not need any cleaning agents at all and is available as a hand-held device as well as a large device for cleaning large areas. Like the water hoover, the steam cleaner fills the water tank with water. Unlike the water hoover, however, the dirt is not sucked in, but only loosened and removed in the next step. The advantage of steam cleaners is that not only dust and dirt are removed, but also bacteria and germs are completely eliminated.

Decision section: What types of water hoovers are there and which is the right one for you?

If you want to buy a water hoover, there are the following types to choose from:

  • Conventional water vacuum cleaner
  • Wet-dry water hoover without water discharge
  • Wet-dry water hoover with water discharge

Each of these types has various advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the purpose for which you want to use a water hoover, different models are suitable for you.

What are the features of a conventional water hoover and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

The water hoover can also be optimally used as an air filtration system.

A conventional water hoover is equipped with a water filter instead of a bag. The dirt is bound in the water and no longer escapes from the appliance. In addition to the dirt removal function, the water hoover can also be used as an air filter system. To do this, you can simply let it run for a while without the hose. In this way, the air in the room is significantly improved. After the suction process, the water container only needs to be emptied and cleaned.

  • Sucks up dirt and dust very reliably
  • dust is bound in the water
  • particularly suitable for allergy sufferers
  • Cleaning after every use
  • Inconvenient for short vacuuming

What are the characteristics of a wet-dry water vacuum cleaner without water discharge and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A wet-dry water hoover is a hoover that can suck up liquids in addition to its normal suction function. Both the dirt and the liquid are collected in a container, which is emptied after the suction process. However, both suction processes cannot take place at the same time, but should be carried out separately. To prevent the pipes from clogging and sticking, thorough cleaning is particularly important with these water hoovers.

  • Sucks dry dirt as well as liquids
  • Easy to use
  • Perfect for allergy sufferers
  • Immediate cleaning necessary

What distinguishes a wet-dry water-dispensing water hoover and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A water-dispensing water hoover is also a hoover that can suck up dust as well as liquids. In addition, such a water hoover also has the function of spraying water onto a surface by means of a handle. In this way, stains on upholstery and carpets can be removed easily and efficiently.

This type of water hoover usually has two water tanks. One is used to collect dirt, while the other contains fresh water. This makes the water-dispensing water hoover more cumbersome to clean.
  • Mopping becomes unnecessary as the vacuum takes care of this
  • Suitable for all floor coverings
  • Absorbs liquids
  • Perfect for allergy sufferers
  • More expensive
  • Cleaning time-consuming

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate water hoovers

In order to choose the best water hoover for you, you should consider some decisive factors. These include the following criteria:

The suction power of a water hoover is one of the most important factors to consider when making a purchase decision. A good suction result can only be achieved with good suction power.

Most water hoovers have a power of 1,500 and 1,700 watts, some even up to 2,400 watts. But even water hoovers with a power of less than 1,000 watts can achieve a satisfactory suction result. The suction power depends not only on the wattage, but also on other factors.

These include the power of the motor, but also the type of suction tube and the choice of nozzle. Optimal suction power is achieved when all aspects work well together.

A high wattage does not automatically mean high suction power.

Water hoovers have different nozzles. A comparison is worthwhile

The choice of nozzle is particularly important. A hard floor nozzle, carpet nozzle and upholstery nozzle are usually included. In addition, there are also nozzles that are specially designed for pet hair or gentle cleaning of furniture. You should always choose a nozzle that matches the type of floor so that optimum suction performance can be achieved.

The capacity of the water hoover is also an important criterion. Especially if the water hoover is to suck up water, the water container must be large enough. In this case, a container volume of 1.8 litres or more is suitable. Otherwise, a smaller capacity is also sufficient.

The water tank should never be completely empty to prevent damage to the motor.

You should also ensure that the water tank is only filled to the maximum water level mark. The binding of dust and dirt causes foam to form in the water tank, which takes up space. Special defoamers can be used to counteract the formation of foam.

The volume of water hoovers is measured in decibels (dB). Most water hoovers have a volume of 80 dB, but even here there are different variations on the market. What volume is OK for you depends mainly on how you feel about the noise. While 80 dB is fine for some, for others it is too loud. In the following, we have compiled some guideline values for you to orient yourself with regard to the volume.

Machine volume
Jet 130 dB
Drilling machine 100 dB
Car 90 dB
Water hoover 80 dB

A conversation at room volume has a comparative volume of 60 dB.

HEPA filter

Although the dirt is bound with water when a water hoover is used and remains in the container, it can happen that individual particles are not captured by the water. Especially for allergy sufferers, it makes sense to have an additional HEPA filter installed. HEPA filters additionally clean up to 99% of the air from flying fine dust during the suction process. There is an anti-allergen seal especially for allergy sufferers, which is attached to the devices.

Facts worth knowing about water vacuum cleaners

In the previous sections, we have compiled the most important information for you. Finally, we would like to give you some tips.

How to use the water vacuum cleaner?

A water hoover is just as easy to use as an ordinary hoover. However, the use is a little different from ordinary vacuuming. To use the water vacuum cleaner, the water container should first be filled with water and some defoamer. The defoamer prevents excessive foam formation. Then the hoover can be connected to the mains.

With most appliances, the HEPA filter is activated automatically. If this is not the case with your appliance, you should now do this manually to filter the air in the room. Then vacuum the desired area as usual. After the suction process, the dirty water is disposed of in the toilet or drain and the water tank and HEPA filter are cleaned under running water and finally dried. This prevents the formation of mould.

How should the water hoover be cleaned?

In fact, the water tank of a water hoover should be cleaned regularly after each use. This is the only way to prevent germs and bacteria from accumulating and being distributed in the room during the next suction operation. However, cleaning the water tank is not particularly complicated. All you have to do is remove and empty the tank after vacuuming.

Then rinse the water tank with clean water. It is recommended to use a disinfecting liquid from time to time. This gives germs and bacteria no chance. Finally, it is important to dry the water tank carefully. This way you can make sure that your water hoover does not contain any more moisture and that mould does not form.
