The Best Window Squeegee: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a window squeegee
Who is a window squeegee for?
It should be noted that there are two major distinctions when buying a window squeegee. On the one hand, you can buy a classic window squeegee, on the other hand, there are already electronic models that make the job even easier. We will go into more detail about the 3 main types in our decision section.
How do I use a window squeegee properly?
Preliminary work: Before you use the window squeegee, you have to wet-clean the window pane. You can do this either with a lint-free cloth and water with a little detergent or with a window wiper. With a window squeegee, only a microfibre cloth has been stretched over the body, otherwise the two window cleaners look identical. That is why window squeegees and wipers are often available in a 2-in-1 offer.
Squeegeetechnique: Although there are several methods to remove the remaining water, we recommend a tried and tested method. The biggest mistake you can make is to pull from the top down. Instead, place the window squeegee on the side and move it horizontally to the other side. Without lifting it, turn the window cleaner towards the floor and pull it down a little.
Intermediate cleaning: Before you start again, you should first wipe the rubber lip dry with a cloth so that no residual water gets on the window. This is one of the most important tips to avoid streaks and to ensure an optimal effect.
Protect the frame: With non-electric window squeegees, it is important that you cover the window frame with a cloth, as the water will drip down. With window vacuums, for example, the water is sucked directly into the device.
Wipe the frame: Wipe off the remains of the water along the frame with a microfibre cloth.
Pay attention to the weather: It may sound strange, but there is right and wrong weather for cleaning windows. The perfect weather is a cloudy, dry day, but we advise you not to clean your windows in sunny weather. The reason for this is that the sun causes the water on the window pane to dry too quickly and therefore not all of it can be removed.
How much does a window squeegee cost?
|Window squeegee||approx. 5 - 20 €|
|Window squeegee + window wiper||approx. 15 - 40 €|
|Window vacuum cleaner||approx. 35 - 60 €|
|Window cleaning robot||approx. 200 - 400 €|
What alternatives are there to a window squeegee?
It has the advantage of being environmentally friendly and water-saving because it works without chemical cleaning agents and produces approx. 1700 l of steam with only one litre of water.
However, this alternative is only recommended if you either already own a steam cleaner or want to get one. This is because steam cleaners are among the more expensive household appliances due to their versatility. Thus, most of them can also clean windows among some other areas.
Decision: What types of window squeegees are there and which is the right one for you?
What distinguishes a classic window squeegee and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
A classic window squeegee consists of a handle and a rubber lip. This makes it by far the cheapest version. The classic model also scores points because it is very easy to use.
Although you will quickly get the hang of squeegeeing, it is still most difficult to achieve the most beautiful result with a normal window squeegee.
What distinguishes a window vacuum cleaner and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The great advantage of window vacuums is that they can be used for several applications. Besides windows, a window vacuum cleaner also cleans tiles, mirrors and other smooth surfaces.
A window vacuum cleaner also includes a washer and a spray bottle with cleaning agent. This means that the entire process can be carried out with just one device.
What distinguishes a window cleaning robot and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Window cleaning robots have been used in industry for years, but they have not been properly developed and suitable for private households for very long. In the meantime, however, there is already a large selection of highly recommendable devices that pay off despite higher costs.
Because of their expensive purchase, window cleaning robots pay off for you especially if you have many windows or very large glass surfaces. But you don't have to clean them yourself, instead you let the robot do the work. Many models even have Bluetooth app control, so you don't have to stay nearby all the time.
Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and rate window squeegees
To make your decision easier when buying a window squeegee, we have summarised a few buying criteria that you should look out for. These factors are important for an initial overview, after which you can of course include even more detailed criteria.
Window squeegees come in many sizes. This refers to the width of the rubber lip. In and of itself, the exact width is not decisive. However, you should still consider how big your windows are. For larger windows, wider squeegees pay off because the work is done much faster. Wide window squeegees are not suitable for small windows, as the squeegee does not work as smoothly.
Weight plays a major role, especially with window extractors. The weight is not the only factor. There is also the weight of the dirty water that is sucked into the tank with every cleaning operation. The integrated battery makes the vacuum even heavier. The average weight is therefore approx. 0.6-1.5 kg.
With both the classic window squeegee and the window cleaning robot, the weight is irrelevant. The window squeegee has so little weight that it is child's play to handle. The weight of the robot does not have to be taken into account either, as it moves over the window panes by itself.
Hard or soft rubber
When you buy a window squeegee, there are two options for the material of the rubber lip. The two options are hard or soft rubber.
Soft rubber is used for cold surfaces because it adapts more easily than hard rubber. Above all, soft rubber is suitable for stubborn dirt. Rubber lips with this material are very durable and can withstand a lot.
Hard rubber is preferred for warm surfaces. It works well on very smooth surfaces. However, if it is still used for slightly dirtier surfaces, the lip will need to be replaced quite frequently.
Battery running and charging time
As far as window vacuums are concerned, the battery run time should last at least 30 min. The battery runtime usually lasts 2-3 hours, ideally there is a second battery that can be charged in parallel. This pays off especially if you have a household with many or large windows. Some models offer the option of charging the device via USB.
Window robots work via a cable that is plugged into a power socket. If there is no socket nearby, you will need to use extension cords.
Most window cleaning robots have an emergency battery in case of a power failure, for example. This means they back themselves up so they don't fall to the floor.
When it comes to deciding what to buy, the features can play an important role. In the following table, we have listed a few accessories that we consider important.
|Telescopic pole||Extension for handle of extractor that helps to reach high places. Depending on the model, it can be extended by 0.5-2 m|
|Ergonomic handle||A handy handle makes cleaning easier, especially with regular use|
|Cleaning agent||With many models, the manufacturers include a cleaning agent, which can make it easier to choose the right agent|
