The Best DJ Mixer: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a DJ mixer

What kind of DJ are you?

A scratch DJ will place a lot of value on a narrow mixer and a robust crossfader. While a mix DJ will prefer multiple channels and effects. Your style will often determine which mixer you choose. Scratch DJs like DJ Craze or DJ Shiftee are very active in hiphop and usually juggle two turntables. Everyone has heard the scratch sound when a DJ quickly moves a record back and forth and jumps between one song to another.

Just as there are different types of people, there are of course different types of DJs. From (relatively) calm and level-headed to hyper and hyper, it's all there. (Image source: pexels.com / David Bartus)

Keyword: "crossfader". Since you will be using it extensively for scratching, it should be very smooth-running and robust. High quality is required here. In addition, you should be able to easily replace the crossfader without having to unscrew the entire mixer. Width of the mixer: A narrow mixer with two channels will make it easier for you to play with two turntables at the same time. But this also depends on the reach of your arms. Mix DJs like Chris Liebling or Richie Hawtin are more into techno or electronic music. These DJs mix their music slowly and put a lot of emphasis on putting individual songs together into a whole mix. You will hardly need a crossfader here. What you need here are good effects, equalisers and possibly up to four channels. You should also make sure that you can connect external effects.

Did you know that DJs have been around since the beginning of the 20th century? In 1906 at Christmas, a shellac record was used in one of the first radio broadcasts. The first official DJ is considered to be Elman B. Meyers, who DJed on the New York scene in 1911. The first famous and successful DJ was Martin Block around 1935.

How much does a good mixer cost?

The price of a DJ mixer can range from about 100 euros to 3,000 euros. Professional DJ mixers, however, are only available from €500 upwards.

Quality Price Use
Good, but limited features From 100€ Sufficient for small parties
Professional From 500€ Can be connected to club systems

Basically, you can get a good mixer for about 100€. Such mixers have very limited equipment. That's enough for small parties. However, if you want to play professionally, you should look from about 500 euros upwards. Such mixers then have the corresponding audio outputs, which you can connect to large club systems. But how much money you spend also depends on how much extra equipment you really need.

The number and type of outputs are important features that greatly affect the price.

How many channels do you need?

How many channels you need depends on how many audio sources you want to mix together. Two channels are usually sufficient. Battle mixers often have a third channel to connect a second mixer. In the techno and EDM (Euro Dance Music) scene, you often see mixers with four channels. This allows you to mix other drums, like kicks and snares, into two songs. Basically, with more channels you have more creative possibilities.

Which is better, analogue or digital DJ mixer?

Whether analogue or digital, both versions can sound very good. The decisive factor is the quality and design of the mixer. A good digital mixer can sound much better than a bad analogue one and vice versa. Analogue mixers give the music a certain "punch" and energy. They also give the sound a characteristic, warm colouration. Digital mixers, on the other hand, have a little less "punch", but sound clearer and cleaner in the highs. If you decide to buy a digital mixer, you should pay special attention to the quality of the digital sound card. For more information, see the buying criteria.
Type of mixer Analogue mixer Digital mixer
Sound More "punch" and energy, characteristic, warm colouring Less "punch", clearer and cleaner in the highs
Operation Reliable, Intuitive operation Constant signal quality, control manually and via computer, settings can be saved
Problematic Large and heavy Expensive, less reliable, operation not intuitive

Decision: What types of DJ mixers are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between three types of DJ mixers:

  • Analogue DJ mixer
  • Digital DJ mixer
  • Hybrid DJ Mixer

A DJ mixer is basically a mixing console that has been specially designed for DJs and meets their needs exactly. We would like to help you find the right DJ mixer. To help you decide, we will introduce you to the different types in the following section and show you the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

How does an analogue DJ mixer work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

An analogue DJ mixer has advantages such as good sound quality and simple intuitive operation. For these reasons, they are very popular with DJs. If for some reason the sound fails, you can simply switch to an unused channel. This way you are able to fix any breakdowns quickly. For this reason, an analogue mixer is considered extremely reliable.

Advantages
  • High operational reliability
  • Good sound quality
  • Intuitive operation
Disadvantages
  • Reproduction of a setting is time-consuming
  • Large
  • Heavy

Although the operation of analogue DJ mixers is simple, it is time-consuming if you want to exactly reproduce a setting you have made. The 32 switches and knobs all have to be adjusted individually. Analogue DJ mixers are often larger and heavier than their digital counterparts, which is impractical for many DJs.

How does a digital DJ mixer work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

With digital DJ mixers, the quality of the digital signal remains constant and is managed with the help of various control elements. In addition, you have the option of controlling the mixer via the computer and saving settings. You can easily keep the digital mixers up to date by updating the software.

Advantages
  • Constant signal quality
  • Can be controlled manually and via computer
  • Settings can be saved
  • Software updates possible
Disadvantages
  • Expensive
  • Lower operational safety
  • Operation not intuitive

The disadvantages of the digital version are, on the one hand, the high purchase price and, on the other hand, the lower operational reliability. If the digital DJ mixer fails, there is usually no way to switch to another channel. In this case, a live performance would have to be interrupted. Also, the operation is not always easy due to the various additional effects and possibilities.

How does a hybrid DJ mixer work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Hybrid DJ mixers combine the best of both worlds. You can use advantages such as the good sound quality and uncomplicated operation of an analogue mixer and still benefit from the advantages of the digital world. This means, for example, that you can save and reproduce your settings.

Advantages
  • Good sound quality
  • Settings can be saved
  • The best of both worlds combined
Disadvantages
  • Expensive

However, hybrid DJ mixers are not only practical, but also expensive.

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate DJ mixers

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate DJ mixers. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective device. In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Balanced outputs
  • Separate booth output
  • Fader quality
  • Volume level meters
  • Built-in USB sound card and USB ports
  • Sound card quality
  • Midi capability

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a device with this function or not.

Balanced outputs

Balanced outputs eliminate noise in the cables between your mixer and the speakers. This gives you a better sound. Professional DJ mixers usually have balanced XLR and 6.3 mm jack outputs. However, to benefit from balanced outputs, your cables and speaker inputs should be balanced.

Separate Booth Output

A booth output allows you to hear your mix directly on speakers behind your DJ booth. Your mix will sound different on speakers than through your headphones. The reason for this has to do with the physics of sound waves. So if you listen to your music through separate monitor speakers, you will get a better sense of what your audience is hearing. This can increase the quality of your mix.

Fader quality

Non-contact optical, magnetic or electric faders are the best choice. You should also be able to replace or clean them relatively easily without having to take the whole mixer apart. Thereare carbon faders that are very cheap to produce and are used in many DJ mixers and DJ controllers today. However, these wear out relatively quickly. It is best to use contactless optical, magnetic or electric Inno faders. These are more expensive, but last longer.

Level meters

Level meters give you visual feedback about the volume of your tracks. A good mixer will have a separate level meter for each channel. This makes it easier for you to match your tracks to each other. It also makes it much easier to collaborate with several DJs.

Built-in USB sound card and USB ports

Allow you to connect a laptop or other USB sound source to your mixer. Multiple USB ports allow you to connect additional USB sound sources or midi controllers to your mixer. But be careful, not every USB mixer is Midi compatible.

Did you know that the smallest Dj mixer weighs only 130 grams? It fits in any pocket, is mobile and works without a power supply or battery.

Sound card quality

If you want to play in big clubs, the card should work with a minimum resolution of 24 bits and a 44 kHz sampling rate. The quality of the sound card determines the quality and dynamics of your music. Very good digital mixers can also work with higher sampling rates of 48-96 kHz. Although you will hardly notice the difference at home, it is clearly audible on large club systems.

Midi capability

If you want to use your mixer together with a laptop DJ programme, you should check whether it has Midi connections or is Midi-compatible. A midi mixer will allow you to control your DJ program from the outside. You can also check how many buttons and knobs are capable of sending midi signals. Midisignals can also be sent via USB connection. USB has the advantage that many more midi signals can be sent at the same time. But be careful, if your mixer does not have a USB port, you need an external midi capable sound card to connect your laptop.

Facts worth knowing about DJ mixers

Do you even need a mixer if you mix on your computer?

A mixer is very important, but there are more and more musicians who produce their songs entirely on the computer.

Since every music production programme usually has a digital mixer built in, an external mixer is no longer an absolute necessity. An external sound card can also be used for audio recording. An external mixer can make it easier for you to work on your projects, as the functions are often more clearly laid out and only a handle away. In addition, you can only get that warm, natural sound with an external analogue mixer.

How can you record from the mixer into your computer?

There are different possibilities, you either need an external sound card, a USB interface on the mixer or a jack cable that you connect to your PC. The best option would be to use a mixer with an integrated USB sound card. You just have to connect your mixer to your computer via USB cable and you're ready to go. You can also get an external USB sound card. Make sure it has enough inputs so that you can connect multiple mixer channels.

In effect, you just plug the sound card into your PC and connect the outputs of your mixer to the inputs of your card. A third option is also possible, but this solution is not very optimal for audio quality. Mixers usually all have jack outputs that you can connect to your computer with a cable, provided your PC has jack inputs. There is also a fourth option of recording via an SD card or with a digital recorder. However, not all mixers support this option.

When buying, you should consider your genre and location, for example, large dance floor, small hall, etc. Each genre and equipment requires different technical specifications.
