What is Lapacho tea?

The tea is made from the inner bark of the Lapacho tree. This inner bark is dried and in finely cut small pieces is infused with hot water and then served as a tea. It is available under many different names such as Ipe Roxo, Pau d'Arco or Taheebo tea. A very German name would also be tree bark tea or Inca tea. Most commonly, however, you will find it under the names Lapacho or Taheebo tea.

Where can I get Lapacho tea and how much does it cost?

Lapacho tea is not regularly available in supermarkets. You are more likely to find it in organic markets.

Some pharmacies offer the finely cut inner bark called lapacho tea among their natural health teas. We recommend you visit a well-stocked shop and ask for the tea there. Plan to spend about €5.00 to buy about 200g of Lapacho tea.

Is the tea available in bags or only as a whole tea and how do I prepare it?

You can buy Lapacho tea ready portioned in tea bags. Each tea bag contains about 5g of Lapacho inner bark, which is enough for one cup. When preparing the tea, you should use boiling water and let the tea steep as long as indicated on the package leaflet in order to develop its active ingredients and aromas. The most common variety on the market, however, is the finely cut inner bark of the Lapacho tree in 100g, 250g or 500g units. The more grams you buy, the less it costs in the average price per kilo.

You use about 2 tablespoons of the finely chopped Lapacho inner bark for 4 cups of 250ml.

The best way to prepare the Lapacho tea is to use a saucepan and add 1 litre of water and wait until it boils gently. Then add 2 tablespoons of the Lapacho inner bark to the boiling water for 4 cups of 250ml each. After five minutes, turn off the heat and let the water with the Lapacho tea steep for another 20 minutes. If necessary, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, as it helps to optimally extract the minerals. Then remove the remaining Lapacho pieces from the tea with a sieve and serve it. It is not harmful to consume these small pieces, but if the tea is steeped for a very long time, it could become a little bitter.

What does Lapacho tea taste like and can I sweeten it?

The taste is slightly earthy with a sweet vanilla note The tea is comparable to a rooibos tea. It can be sweetened according to your needs. You can sweeten it with honey, sugar, sweetener or fruit juice. The combination with orange juice is particularly tasty and contains additional vitamin C from the oranges. Some add milk, but that is a matter of taste. It should be drunk lukewarm or cold, as when hot it contains a high level of tannic acid which can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth.

In general, there are no medical facts that confirm an official effectiveness of taking Lapacho tea. There is a lack of differentiated studies and sufficient trials and tests. However, through traditional use and experience from herbal medicine, lapacho tea is always recommended.

The inner bark of the Lapacho tree is a popular import product. There are varying quality levels of Lapacho tea and they have different purities. The reason for this lies in insufficient quality controls and the use of sometimes completely different but similar tree species such as mahogany due to ignorance. Therefore, when buying Lapacho tea, make sure that it has verified quality controls and, if possible, the exact name of the Lapacho tree species. The lapachol concentration in bark mast is between 2-7%. A good quality is 4% lapachol or 40mg lapachol per gram of pau d'arco bark / lapachol inner bark.

Shelf life

The storage of the tea is important. It should not be stored in metal tea tins or in a plastic container. A ceramic container would be ideal. This ensures a longer shelf life. You can recognise a fresh Lapacho tea by its aromatic smell and its red bark.

Packaging

Lapacho tea should be packed in cardboard or paper bags, as plastic bags are not suitable for storage. In plastic bags, the red lapacho bark reacts with the plastic and loses its effect. The Lapacho tree grows in Latin America and characterises the landscapes of its appearance in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Due to its popularity, there are now trees from controlled cultivation that are used for the production of red lapacho bark. This is because the bark is a renewable component of the tree without permanently damaging it.

What is the cultural background of Lapacho tea?

Lapacho tea finds its origin in the time of the Incas. The Inca urban culture ruled South America between the 13th and 16th centuries. They boiled the inner bark of the Lapacho tree with hot water and used it on people with different symptoms to fight various diseases. The Indians call the lapacho tree the tree of life. In their indigenous language, they also call the tree tajy, which means "having power and strength". They use the wood of the lapacho tree, or pau d'arco, for their hunting bows.

In South America, many natives still use the Lapacho inner bark as a panacea to fight diseases such as malaria, respiratory problems, colds, coughs, flu, fungal infections, snake bites and other ailments.

In America, they use the inner bark of the lapacho tree for their herbal medicine against diseases like lupus, diabetes, Parkinson's or even yeast infections. This tea has only been known in Europe since the 1950s and has been studied by researchers and doctors for its effects. It is currently a popular medicinal tea in North America.

What does scientific research say about the effects of Lapacho tea?

In the 1960s, the discussion started that the active ingredient of Lapacho can be used for different types of cancer. The reason is that the inner bark of the tree contains a large amount of chemicals called quinoids and a small amount of benzenoids and flavonoids. These quinoids in turn contain anthraquinones, furanonaphthoquinones, lapachones and naphthoquinones and have thus been considered as herbal remedies.

The effect from the plant extracts of the Pau d'Arco tree had an antitumour effect on animals and thus attracted the attention of researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). They focused on the most potent active ingredient, lapachol, and discovered significant activity against cancer and tumours in rats according to a 1968 study. The National Cancer Institute discontinued the study in 1970 because the therapeutic effect involved too many side effects such as nausea, vomiting and anti-vitamin K activity. Thus, no further studies were conducted for cancer research. In general, according to clinical research, Lapacho has a strong in-vitro activity against bacteria, fungi and yeasts and is therefore applicable for herpes, influenza, malaria and inflammation, among many others.

What is a Lapacho tree and what does it look like?

The lapacho tree comes from the botanical genus of the trumpet tree and is native to South and Central America. The locals call it pau d'arco and it is found in the Amazon rainforest. There are two species of lapacho trees. The normal lapacho tree refers to itself in its scientific names as Tabebuia avellanedeaeandincludes up to 100 different genera of its species. Some examples to distinguish them are the different colours of the flowers, which can be pink, yellow or white.

The red lapacho tree is called Handroanthus impetiginosus and is known for its purple-pink flowers. In general, the lapacho tree is a very popular and common tree and characterises the typical landscapes of South American cities. The Pau d'Arco tree can reach a height of up to 30 metres and its diameter is two to three metres. It lives well over 100 years. Its bark is smooth, brown to grey and with elongated furrows. The inner bark used, also called bast layer, is used for tea. The lapacho tree has a hard and heavy wood and is of high quality. This is also very popular for building houses, boats or agricultural implements.

Is the extraction of the bark mast or the inner red bark ecologically fair?

Yes, because not the whole tree is used for the production of Lapacho bark. The outer bark is removed from the trunk and then the inner, red bark is obtained. This is then peeled off and contains the active ingredient Lapachol. Within a year, the bark grows back again. You can compare it with the production of cork from the cork oak.

Due to the high demand from Europe and America, there are now special farms for tea production. The cultivation concentrates purely on the production of lapachotee. However, there is also bark mast from felled trees. The Lapacho trees or Pau d'Arco is a popular and qualitative tree for further processing in the wood industry.
