One of the most important questions to ask when buying an LED lamp is how much power it consumes. LED lamps are very energy efficient and the most power saving way to bring light into your home. They consume about only 14% of what an equivalent incandescent bulb would cost in electricity.
For example, a 60-watt incandescent bulb can be compared to a 10-watt LED lamp. Since the luminosity of LED lamps is measured in lumens, this would correspond to a 600 lumen LED lamp. LED lamps thus have the highest luminous efficacy, which of course also becomes noticeable at the end of the year when considering electricity costs.
Assuming a burning time of six hours per day, using an LED lamp instead of an incandescent bulb saves around 28€ per year. In addition, there is a significantly more positive CO2 balance. All in all, the use of LED lamps produces the same quality of light, and you can also save some electricity costs in the long run.
Brightness and light colour
First of all, it should be noted that the light colour of an LED lamp is given in Kelvin. The colour temperature indicates whether a lamp has a warm or cool glow. Below you will find a short overview of how the Kelvin number influences the light colour of an LED lamp.

Depending on your taste and needs, you should definitely pay attention to the different gradations when you next buy an LED lamp. Normally, warm white LED lamps are preferred in private rooms or restaurants. In contrast to offices, industrial halls or corridors, where neutral white to daylight white LED lamps are used.
Base type and lampholders
As is familiar from conventional light bulbs, the various LED lamp versions differ in their sockets. Therefore, before making a purchase, it is essential to make sure that the socket type of the LED lamp matches the socket to be used. There is a choice of screw sockets, bayonet sockets and plug-in sockets.
- The typical screw thread: which you know from standard light bulbs, is called E27 and stands out due to a very simple exchange. The size of such a thread is 27mm. Of course, there are also screw threads with a smaller diameter, for example 14mm, which are mainly used in chandeliers.
- Bayonet base: This type of LED lamp has two base pins and is inserted into the socket by plugging or turning. This type of LED lamp is usually found in wall lights, ceiling lights or hanging lights.
- Plug-in base: The designation for plug-in bases is G-24, which ultimately only differ in the number of their connection pins. These LED lamps are mostly used for shelf or shop lighting.
The service life of an LED lamp is usually given in hours, more rarely in years. Of course, the actual service life always depends on the individual use of the LED lamp. In general, the service life of LED lamps varies between 15000 - 100000 hours, which is considerably longer than that of incandescent bulbs or halogen lamps. You can find this information on the packaging.
If we assume an LED lamp with a service life of 50,000 hours and a weekly operation of 60 hours per week, the service life is approx. 16 years. However, the switching cycles also play a role. Especially with corridor or staircase lighting, the service life is reduced due to a higher number of switching cycles per day.
At the end of the service life of an LED lamp, however, they do not simply go out. They become darker and emit less brightness. To see how much brightness will still be available at the end of the life, you should look at the standard of the average rated life. With standard L80, you will have 80% of the original lumen value left at the end.
The choice of beam angle of an LED lamp is mainly related to the location and purpose. This is indicated by the unit degrees ° or by the abbreviation D (for degree).
The smaller the degree angle, the smaller the light beam of the LED lamp.
Theoretically, an LED lamp can achieve a beam angle of 10° - 360°. Very small beam angles are mainly used for illuminating individual objects or products. LED lamps with a beam angle of 90° are often found as basic lighting in narrow rooms and corridors or other pathways.
However, in order to find uniform lighting in normal rooms, you should buy LED lamps with a beam angle of at least 120°. For example, an LED lamp hanging at a height of 2.40 m with a beam angle of 120° illuminates an area 8.30 m in diameter.
First of all, it has to be said that not every LED lamp has the property of dimmability. However, every LED lamp that has this option is also labelled as such. This means that a particular advantage of LED lamps is that they can be adjusted to the desired luminosity at will.
Dimming an LED lamp means that you can individually adjust the brightness of the lamp according to your wishes.
A lower power supply reduces the brightness of the LED lamp. This is why this function also offers the additional possibility of saving electricity. To dim the LED lamp, you need a compatible LED dimmer.
However, more modern LED lamps already offer the function of being able to adjust the brightness digitally. In addition, there are also LED lamps that promise not only dimmability but also colour temperature control.

Is an LED lamp suitable for outdoors or for the garden?
